Have you checked any census records? The 1870 census for the county is transcribed, indexed and online at the county site under usgenweb.org. The 1880 census is transcribed, indexed and online at www.familysearch.org. The 1915 (original) NY state census (and I believe also the 1905) are availble at the county courthouse in Canton but that's a bit of a trip from TX. There are many newspaper, cemetery, church and other records at the usgenweb site. If you have the full date of death, you could contact the county clerk for a copy of the death certificate. Many old NY state newspapers are available on microfilm. You may be able to locate an obit if you don't already have one. Do a google search for 'ny state newspaper project' which will display a link with more info.
