I've "rescued" a group of old photographs which appear to all belong to the BIBBINS Family of New York, Illinois, and Minnesota. The first is identified as Mrs. M. BIBBINS, Mother of Julius and Melvin BIBBINS. The photograph is dated Aug 3rd and notes that the subject is 74 years old at the time it was taken, likely in the 1870's or 1880's. The photograph was taken at the Mads Sogaard Studio in Chatfield, MN. Based on limited research I do find record of Julius BIBBINS and Melvin Hull BIBBINS, sons of Eliphas or Eliphay BIBBINS and Laura W. HAWLEY. Melvin Hull BIBBINS was b. 25 Jan 1829 in St. Lawrence County, NY and his brother Julius in 1847 in Illinois. The mystery is why is she referenced as "Mrs. M. BIBBINS" if her first name was Laura and her husband was Eliphas or Eliphay? Records indicate that Melvin Hull BIBBINS married Sarah Jane HAWLEY on 8 Mar 1853 in Mount Carroll, IL and died 1 Feb 1899 in Chatfield, MN. During the 1880 census the couple was living in Chatfield, MN with his Mother, Laura W. BIBBINS, age 75, born in NY to NY born parents. Melvin was listed as age 51, born in NY, a Farmer whose father was born in CT and mother in NY. His wife Sarah Jane is noted as age 51, born in NY to NY born parents. Julius J. BIBBINS married Elvira SILSBEE on 8 Dec 1874 in Fillmore Co., MN. During the 1880 census the couple was living in Orion, MN with a daughter, Lina E. BIBBENS age 4 months, born in MN. Julius was listed as age 32, born in IL to parents born in MA. His wife Elvira was listed as age 23, born in MN to parents born in IL and PA respectively. Does the difference in location for his parents mean anything? The second photograph is one of Nelie TROW BIBBINS, taken at the S. Farrell Studio in Chatfield, MN, probably in the 1880's with Nelie likely in her 20's at the time. The third photograph is identified as Sidney BIBBINS, taken at the Hoard & Tenneys Studio in Winona, MN. It was probably taken in the 1880's with Sidney looking to be in his 20's at the time it was taken. I believe that this third photograph may be of Sidney Edgar BIBBINS b. 8 Feb 1855 at Mount Carroll, IL to parents Melvin Hull BIBBINS and Sarah Jane HAWLEY. Sidney married Sarah Jane EVERTS on 15 May 1880, and died 19 Aug 1929 in Pasadena, CA. Along with these photographs were three unidentified photographs: 1 - Female, taken at the E. E. Bertrand Studio in Chatfield, MN, 1870's, looks to be in her 20's 2 - Male, taken at the Stone's Great Northern Photo Studio in Potsdam, NY, 1880's, looks to be in his 60's 3 - Female, taken at the D. R. Miller Studio in Mount Carroll, IL, 1870's or 1880's, looks to be in her teens I'm hoping to see all of these photographs returned to the BIBBINS Family so that they can once again be in the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Glad to see that someone else is rescueing old photos, like I have been doing that for awhile. A couple of things-she, Mrs. Bibbins, may have gone by a nick name or her middle name. Hence the initial M. Or, he might have gone by a middle name-can you blame him with a first name like that? Second, it's great that you posted here. Have you posted on USGENWEB on the county sites for Illinois and Minnesota? Also, check to see if GenForum has a Bibbins forum. Post under the other surnames mentioned too. You may connect up with descendants from that direction too. Kindredconnections, CousinConnections and others can help as far as posting the information. Good luck in your search for members of this family.
