You can try the town clerk but note that records were not kept until 1880 and you are mostly likely to find records in the late 1880's onward. There is an indexed, online transcription of the 1880 US census at www.familysearch.org. You might want to search that. His wife (Julia/Lucie) and children left the Potsdam area around 1883, so he must have died there prior to that time or maybe en route to Michigan.
