Hi! I'm looking for some help finding the French spelling for Barney. I had thought Brunet, but can't make a connection that I can prove. It's also been suggested that the correct form is Bernier. In the 1850 Dekalb census, his wife is Jane. Francis was born in Montreal in 1806. Children: Sara Louise, Harriet, Francis, Joseph, William, Mary and Esther. Any help would be great!! That year will be close to his year of death, if he died. He also could have just up and moved or put in jail etc. It is too early for Civil War service. Time to look for a death record. If they belonged to a church that keep records, try that route. Check the library catalog at familysearch.org and see what records the LDS have on your county of interest. Perhaps he left a Will.
