    3. Hello Sue, I can't say if Bernier is in all cases the French name for Barney, but in my family I have one case where it is. I have Rose Pelno, my great-grandmother's sister, who married George Barney. My grandmother had written in her photo album that the original spelling of Barney was Bernier. This family lived in Potsdam, NY. George was born about 1860, place not known to me. He died in 1917. He was a log driver. He was trying to clear a log jam in the Racquette River. He fell off the logs and was drowned. His body wasn't found until months later. I don't know his parents.
