Bruce Tyo Rochester NY Heard Recorder, Potsdam, NY Friday 19 Oct 1934, Page 4 MRS. ARCHIE E. SUTHERLAND The death of Adah Hammond Sutherland, wife of Archie E. Sutherland occurred at her home, 16 Broad St. Wednesday night, October 11. She had for some time been in failing health. Mrs. Sutherland was born at West Stockholm, Nov.4, 1869, attended the local schools and taught in the rural schools of that section. She married James Eagley of Merrickville Ont., living in that town until the death of Mr. Eagley. Six years ago she was united in marriage with Mr. A. E. Sutherland and they have made Potsdam their home since that time. Mrs. Sutherland was a woman of friendly nature and was beloved by many throughout this section. Funeral services were held at the home, Friday morning, at 10:30, Rev. Dr. F. L. Haley of Madrid, rector of the Norwood Episcopal church officiating with burial at Merrickville, Ont. Mrs. Sutherland is survived by her husband, a step daughter, Mrs. Mildred Fuller, St. Albans, Vt., two sisters Mrs. Clara Heaton, Canton, and Mrs. Cynthia Walker, Norwood; and a half sister, Mrs.Edna Garvey, New York City. Hearld Recorder - Potsdam, NY December 9, 1938 Archie E. Sutherland, for over fifty years a resident of Potsdam, died at Potsdam Hospital Sunday afternoon. Mr. Sutherland had not been well since Thanksgiving and had entered the hospital December 1st for treatment. A liver ailment and a severe attack of jaundice were the cause of his death. Archie E. Sutherland was born in West Stockholm Sept. 13, 1860, a son of Ephraim and Phoebe Sutherland. He attended the schools of that place and assisted his father in the blacksmith shop. In 1886 he moved to Potsdam and entered the employ of the Leete Foundry and Machine Shop working for this company for 21 years when he became a fireman at the Clarkson College heating plant. In 1912 he became an instructor in the wood shop, forge department and machine shop of the college, holding this position until 1937 when he retired after thirty-one years. Mr. Sutherland was twice married. His first wife was Miss Harriet E. Mott who died in 1922 and his second wife was Miss Ada Eagley of Norwood, who died in 1934. Two children were born of the first marriage, Hoy Sutherland, who died while in an aviation camp in Detroit at the time of the World War and Mildred Sutherland, now Mrs. Ira T. Waller of Hardwick, VT. Mr. Sutherland is also survived by two brothers: Hiram and George of West Stockholm. Burial was made in West Stockholm cemetery.
