Just this past weekend I was at a family gathering and my brother-in-law had a family tree typed by his grandmother in 1960. The LaGraves that show up in the Civil War records would all have been sons of William Charles LaGrave and his wife Esther DuFresne. If you check the 1860 census, they're listed together. It looks like Dennis was one of 13 children, 6 of whom were in the Civil War. They all started out in Messina NY, and after the war spread out across the country - most to the midwest, but one went to California. Another note on the tree might be a little clue though - It says that brothers William Charles (b.1810) and Michael LaGrave came to America from Bordeaux France at the same time, but went their separate ways. I wonder if your Dennis was another brother who also left his home and family behind?? Parents were William Charles LaGrave (1791-1833) and Marie Narboullet (b. 1791) in Bordeaux.
