Silas was originally from New York, as I'm sure you know (which of his sisters are you descended from) but he wanted to go West- so the family moved to Iowa. Then he decided he wanted to go West again, but his wife refused to go any farther, so he went on and left her and the three children in Iowa and went to California- supposedly to look for gold. He apparently came back at least once and sent money from time to time. But he must not have had much luck with looking for gold, because he ended up going back to his profession of being a lawyer. I believe he also owned some land near Chinese Camp. I'm from California originally, and my parents still live there and they've been planning to go and see his grave.
