    3. Don't forget that the town of Wegatchie is in Jefferson County, not St. Lawrence County. You might surf around & see if you can find any transcriptions from Jefferson County cemeteries, or see if there's a historical society for Jefferson County. Carol Norman cgnorm@earthlink.net

Have you used Anne Cady's site? If not, it has wonderful info. Just google her name and you will be able to find it. Once there, look for the old Notre Dame death records. With them is a listing of names and the variations. It will show you how some names changed from the French to English. Good luck! I know my gg was called Alphonse, but his grave marker says Alfred. I could not figure it out. Now, from you, I know Alphonse is Alfred. Very, very confusing. Nora was actually Iva Nora Leclair. Which is why I probably never could find her either. Also, Peter Denicour was actually Pierre Denicor (after much hunting). Now I am looking for a Guy (Either LeClair, or Denicore). Looked and can find no "Guy". Obviously, this is the same scenario. He is definitely called Guy because it is written on his picture and it is marked as an uncle of my great aunt. Thanks again for solving a mystery that has been haunting me for months. (He had a brother so I thought perhaps this was the brother. I believe the Storie family cemetery is on private land in the area, but other than references to it in some Storie obituaries, I haven't located it or seen mention of it in other resources. Click on the state of New York. Then choose the county of St. Lawrence. When you get to the St. Lawrence Co. page, click on the the cemetery tab. There are several listings for cemetery indexes. Click on Ann Cady's cemetery index. The town you want is probably Oswegatchie. Oswegatchie is another name for Ogdensburg. There might be another catagory for volunteer look-ups. You can find it at the Northern NY Library Newspaper site, St. Lawrence Co. Put her name as "Nora Leclair". It lists survivors as a brother Peter Dennecourt of Potsdam, sisters Emma Gardner of Watertown and Mrs. Merton Williams of Ogdensburg. I have Mrs. Merton Williams as Nina Dencore b. Dec. 12, 1882 Altona, Franklin Co., NY and her parents as Marcel Denicore and Elizabeth Bane (no more info than that). I cannot assure you that this is correct but might be a lead. I also see Alphone and Nora in the 1910 census in Altamont, Franklin Co., NY, so it doesn't seem unreasonable. On the exact spelling of names, the French Canadian names often turn up with a number of variations when they are in the US. So don't stress about the variations you find,ex. Leclerc, Leclere,LeClair. This is also true for first names especially when they do not have an exact English version, Alphonse to Alfred, Narcisse to Nelson, etc. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. To get to the second part, click on "Next Page" twice. If you can't access it, let me know. I'll type it up for you. Joan L. Many sites have that feature and I have found it helpful. Also, you may know that when searching back before the 1900's you may find a name spelled several different ways.
