    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Davide_Ivaldi Surnames: HOWLAND , CLARK , DAVIS , MAXAM Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.saintlawrence/16479/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Samuel Howland b. 1810 NY (Onondaga per 1845 NY census) m. Caroline Davis b.1811 d. 4 nov 1846 Sackett's Harbor Cem. (dau of Jonathan Davis and Caroline Clark) They had a son named Clark Davis Howland, b. 4 Dec 1834 (in Jefferson County per 1845 NY census) Samuel died in Kane County Illinois in 1865. Fairly wealthy.. Estate was about $10,000. The 1840 federal census for the town of Pitcairn NY shows a household w. Saml. "Holland" (age between 20 and 30), an adult woman (20 - 30), a boy (5-10) and a girl ( < 5) This matches the given birthdates of Samuel Howland 1810, his wife Caroline (Davis) 1811, his son Clark Davis Howland b. 1834 and Clark's sister Mary Jane b. 1839.... Other helpful information: Hannah Howland Maxam born in 1806 died in Twinsburgh, OH in 1871. I believe she is Samuel's sister for several reasons. Samuel lived there during the 1850 census (after his wife died in 1846) and Hannah's son Lewis married Samuel's daughter Mary Jane in Kane County IL prior to moving with Samuel's son Clark out to Nebraska. The chronicle of one of Hannah's sons states that Hannah's father (who would presumedly be Samuel's father) was of Welsh ancestry and died at the camp at Greenbush, in NY during the War of 1812. No name given. Many Howlands from NY served in the War of 1812... I have found lots of information from census, the newspaper archives and even have a picture of his headstone monument at the Russell cemetary - but I cannot seem to be certain of where exactly he came from in England. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look? It would appear that quite a few farmers relocated from Vermont to the St. Lawrence County area in the early 1850's? Perhaps he travelled from England to Vermont? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Historical Society in Canton, NY. They got out a very old map, and we were able to locate three locations in a town, that had the family name I was searching; two businesses and a home. Appearing in a lot next to the home, it said: "Paul B.G." meaning Paul Burying Ground. We then compared the old map, with a present day map, got the correct route number for today and found it! So perhaps they would be able to help you too, if you can give them a time frame to search in. They do not charge much for researching. Good luck.
