    1. [NYSTLAWR] ARTHUR L BURNS in Ogdensburg and GLAUDE(Glode, Gloud, Gladu
    2. Ann Burns
    3. Sharon Thank you so much. I am related to Arthur Burns, and the family tree would not be complete without at least a little bit about his wife. I would appreciate the information about Ellen. At some point in the next few weeks I hope to go to Ogdensburg to do a little research in person. It's just over an hour's drive from my home. The online newspapers and ancestry.com are terrific sources but I should do a little more 'bare knuckles' research to complete the picture. I am able to give you some information on the parents and siblings of Ellen Thompson if you are interested. I think the father of Robert John Glode might have been Peter Glode. Canton might be a place to do research, in terms of probate records. Ogdensburg would be a good place to search, also. The Ogdensburg library has lots of newspapers on microfilm. The library also has a number of books to look through. John and "Maggie" Issacs are in the 1900 and 1910 census' of the Town of Bombay. They are both listed as "Indian" and they are about the right age. I'm trying to locate a copy of the 1900 census, as I show John listed as Son in Law and Maggie as Daughter, so it should show who her parents are. In 1910, they have two daughters, Louisa and Mary, but the ages don't jibe with what you have already... Louisa is 10 and Mary is 5 in 1910. It also indicates that Maggie has had 5 children but only two are living. If I can find the original of the 1900 census, would you like a copy? He gives his birthdate as August 1 1876 in Franklin Co, NY. The record was signed October 11, 1915 in Cornwall, Ontario (just over the St Lawrence River from Massena, St Lawrence Co, NY). Gregg (my brother-in-law) did mention to me that they were on the Canadian border, so the Quebec thing makes sense - I'll do some searching in Canadian records. I will run the name 'Thompson' by him for a possible maiden for his gr. grandma and see if it rings any bells. I'm assuming on the marriage record you meant 1896? If you don't mind me asking - where are you finding these records? You also mention that the 'Native' name of the father is listed on those with the surname Terrance - I'm so new at this. I know nothing about how the Mowhawk took their names. Was it customary to have two names? And how did they determine their english names? In the record for Margaret Isaacs Terrance, both daughters are listed by the last name Isaacs - would it be possible that the daughter's would have taken he mother's name, not the fathers? Thanks so much for any further advice. I love ancestry's message boards - I always find the most helpful people. Thanks again for your time and effort. Just this past weekend I was at a family gathering and my brother-in-law had a family tree typed by his grandmother in 1960. The LaGraves that show up in the Civil War records would all have been sons of William Charles LaGrave and his wife Esther DuFresne. If you check the 1860 census, they're listed together. It looks like Dennis was one of 13 children, 6 of whom were in the Civil War. They all started out in Messina NY, and after the war spread out across the country - most to the midwest, but one went to California. Another note on the tree might be a little clue though - It says that brothers William Charles (b.1810) and Michael LaGrave came to America from Bordeaux France at the same time, but went their separate ways. I wonder if your Dennis was another brother who also left his home and family behind?? Parents were William Charles LaGrave (1791-1833) and Marie Narboullet (b. 1791) in Bordeaux. So records could be found in all three places. I did see the marriage of a Frank Terrance of Franklin NY in 1996 to a Margaret Thompson. It was registered in Stormont, Ontario (Cornwall). Also I noted several Terrance records in the St. Regis Catholic Church (Quebec side). None seemed to match the names you mentioned. Interesting though that when someone with the surname Terrance married in St. Regis, the record showed only the Native name of the father, not Terrance. I am trying to learn anything I can about the Mowhawk culture and about record keeping around the turn of the century on the Mowhawk reservations. I'd like to determine if Frank Terrance was the father of Katherine and Nancy, or if they had a different father - a birth certificate could help, but I'm not sure how to obtain that.
