I just used ancestry.com to look up Nichols in the Federal Censuses in Hopkinton NY. No Nichols Indeed the Federal Censuses (from ancestry.com) do not show ANY families, at all, ever There were two (at least) separate Nichols families in Stockholm NY 1. Descendants of William Nichols of Topsfield Mass. These William Nichols descendants are unconnected (DNA test results) to the Nichols of Reading Mass 2) Descendants (Guy Nichols, born 23 Jan 1789 in Mass, etal) of Richard Nichols of Reading Mass. These Nichols are, AT BEST, separated from the Samuel Nichols b 1774/1782 by at least 5 generations. As a footnote, Hopkinton,NY is 2.29 miles from Nicholville New York. Ancestry.com shows ONE census year for Nicholville (1880). This census has no Nichols entries. I suspect (without evidence) that both Hopkinton & Nicholville are "villages", or some other small subdivision, of Stockholm Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Carlettas living in Geneva, I was not aware of. The dates you mention help me narrow the search for a marriage date for Marion V. Tiernan to a James Carletta, of Rome. NY.....sometime between 1932 and 1934?? I need to keep researching the nny historical (newspaper) site... I am wondering if Marion Tiernan Carletta is buried out in Nevada or might she be buried up in Waddington area, where her parents and other siblings are... I did find 2 little paragraphs in the Massena Observer, mentioning in April 1930 that Marion was visiting in Chase Mills at spring break time from studies in Utica, NY; also that she was visiting her Aunt T.A. Martin in June 0f 1930, from Utica. This puts Marion in Utica, NY, where in December 0f 1929, she gave up her female child for adoption, to the St. Joseph's infant home, Oneida County, Utica, NY. Her child is listed as 4 months old in the April 1930 census for Utica, NY, listed as Rose M. Tiernan. Marion Tiernan, born in 1912, is not listed in the 1930 census as a child in her family in Waddington, NY and so, I think, Marion was living with a friend somewhere around Utica, or she was staying with her sister, Dorothy, who was studying to be a nurse at the state school in Utica, in the early 30s. at any rate, her child, Rose, was adopted out of the St. Joseph's Infant Home, Green St., Utica, by end of 1930 or early 1931. This child was born in November of 1929. Please alert me to any other info on Marion V. Tiernan Carletta that you know of and thank you for your replies! I'm thinking he could be a grandparent or g'grandparent of the children's father? If I'm remembering correctly, I think there was an Eliza Lafave (one of Jerome's dau) as a housekeeper of another family in the same town. Possibly the children were hers? There is one story that I have often seen (and I am quite sure it is true) that five sons from that LAGRAVE family in St. Lawrence Co. served in the Civil War. I don't have any special research suggestions -- I guess a study of the census for the family, beginning 1850, would be in order. There could be Civil War pension files. As you get closer to 1900, you could start looking for NYS vital records and also obits in local newspapers. I have seen an indication in an old map of Jefferson Co., the the original family name, at least for my LaGraves, may have been "de la Grave" . Also there is a Wisconsin connection, as one of my LaGraves ended up in Portage Co., WI and thereabouts. But there were many families that migrated from Jefferson Co. to Wisconsin and Michigan. I don't think it implies any kind of connection. Sorry I cannot be of more help. I have often wished I could find a connection between the two families, but never have found one.
