Author: Tedbytes1 Surnames: Rice-Wheelock-Payne-Pratt Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.saintlawrence/16525/mb.ashx Message Board Post: According to two living descendants in Michigan, one being Linda Cooksey, a St. Lawrence County,N.Y. researcher that I have corresponded with for 15 years, Silas was used familialy to distinguish father from son as both were named Abner. I have been to the Payne Cemetery as recent as this May in Edwards, and his stone states Abner as you elude. I have always called him Silas Abner Rice accordingly. There was grandfather, father, and son all named Abner. I have bumped heads many times with researchers of this family tried to prove to me that Abner who married Experience Shepard in 1754 was indeed related to descendants of Deacon Edmund.Deacon Edmund thru his son Henry Rice descends however, thusly to Silas Abner Rice albeit not directly as a Rice. Here goes Deacon Edmund Henry Rice Lydia Martha Wheelock Abel Pratt Abel Pratt Jr. Betsey Pratt Silas Abner Rice I can furnish husbands and wives to you if needed so it is made a little clearer. So you see there is a connection, but circuitously; to Silas Abner Rice. Many families as you know inter-marry so many possibilities exist. Any DNA of MDNA can't prove this as the male gene breaks off here. Keep me posted. Ted Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: BonnieWiley77 Surnames: Rice Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.saintlawrence/1027.1509.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: 1. There is no proof that Abner's first name was ever Silas. 2. All the deeds that I have located so far for Abner, and his sons Abner, Jr., and William, in Hampden Co., MA, never give the name of Silas as a first name. Census records for 1790, 1800, and 1810 list Abner as his given name. His marriage record dated 8 Aug 1754 gives his name as Abner. The baptismal records of all of his children list his given name as Abner. 3. I have traced Abner Rice of Westfield and Montgomery, MA to Oneida Co., NY, and Lewis Co., NY and possibly then to St. Lawrence Co., NY. However,it is my belief that he died in Lewis County about 1815. There is an administrator's document in Lewis Co., NY for the estate of Abner Rice that I am in the process of obtaining. 4. I have been corresponding with George King, Historian of the Edmund Rice(1638) Association for several years. He believes that if I can locate a present-day male Rice-surname descendant of Abner Rice to participate in the Rice DNA project, then conjecture about the ancestry of Abner Rice of Westfield will be solved. 1. [NYSTLAWR] New Database - The Troy Newspaper Project
    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath
    3. THE TROY NEWSPAPER PROJECT A multi volume Index of Death and Marriage Records transcribed from various Troy, NY newspapers A. The Troy Daily Press is the THIRD newspaper to be added to the Troy Irish Genealogy Website. The records for this paper cover 131 deaths and 460 names on the marriages during the period February 11, 1833 through June 30, 1834. These records will be of great interest to genealogy researchers since the information in this data base predates the 1880 New York State law requiring the reporting of death and marriage records. These records may help with breaking down some of those "brick walls" that you have been struggling with. Also, the residence reported on the marriage records will be of interest as it shows numerous cities and towns THROUGHOUT NEW YORK STATE as well as Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts and other states. B. You can view these records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website at: www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ and click on PROJECTS and then click on THE TROY NEWSPAPER PROJECT. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. C. Transcribers are currently working on the Troy Post paper covering the years 1846-1851, also the Troy Sentinel covering years 1823-1832 and the Daily Whig for years 1834-1851. If anyone would like to be a transcriber on this project they can send an email OFF LIST to seamus@nycap.rr.com D. Your attention is called to one of the interesting marriage records listed. On July 5, 1833, at the age of 77, Col. Aaron Burr married Mrs. Eliza Jumel. Eliza was the extremely wealthy widow of Stephen Jumel. When she realized her fortune was dwindling from her husband's land speculations, they separated after only four months. The divorce between Burr and Jumel was completed on September 14, 1836, the day of Burr's death. Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY
