    1. Asael / Asahel Smith - Land Grant from Rev. War
    2. Diana Owen
    3. My GGGG Asahel Smith's early 1800, two story house, still stands today (refurbished 2002) at the corner of Hwy 11 and Pickle Rd, Sanfordville, St. Lawrence Co., NY (formerly Stockholm. NY) I believe Asahel Smith may have been granted this land for serving as a Private in the Revolutionary War for NH. Anyone familiar with land grands in St. Lawrence Co. ? Or with suggestions how I might determine if Asahel Smith did receive this as a land grant for military service? Many thanks for any help, Diana Chapman Owen

Did they come to St. Lawrence around 1806 with my Benjamin and John Rose who settled at Landgon Corners? I have wondered if Jane, wife of Benjamin Rose, might have been a Weller. Would they have been Irish? Jane was member of Congregational Church in VT and among the 1st in Potsdam/Crary Mills area in St. Lawrence.

    3. You need to send a note with the word 'subscribe' (without the quote marks) and no other words in the text part of the email. Also put subscribe in the subject line but it's the message part that the automated system reads. If you still have access to your old email address you can do the same with it but with the word 'unsubscribe'. I would suggest to everyone on the list that they use one of the major internet based email systems like hotmail or yahoo. Then as you change from one isp to another, your email address remains the same. 1. Re: [NYSTLAWR] Re: Cemeteries on-line
    2. I'll try to put more on my webpage in the not too distant future, but overall, I don't generally have access to actual cemetery lists or maps. I have used inventories that are at the St. Lawrence County Historical society (most date to the 1950's) and they can help with deciphering out some stones that might have deteriorated since the older inventories were done. In general though, I just find a cemetery, wander around it and make my own "map of it", then start going through it in order. I take pictures of each stone and also document each stone in a notebook using simple pen and paper. Later, when I crop and jpeg compress the pictures (which is needed to keep them small enough to efficiently display), I cross-reference the picture numbers in my written notes. I type the HTML file for the web based inventories at the same time. Taking the pictures and documenting the cemetery actually goes much faster than putting the data online. Over the years, my efficiency has improved to where I can do about 500 photographs in a day. More on newer cemeteries, less on cemeteries where I have to dig for stones or play games with light to read the inscriptions. I never use shaving cream, chalk, or any other foreign substance on the stones. I do find the hours of 11am to 1pm to be the times to save for the faintest stones as that is when the suns natural shadows work their magic to make the inscription readable. The majority of writing on stones faces either directly east or west (since people are generally buried with their feet pointing east), so based on whether the cemetery is headstone or footstone oriented can also play a role. . There is a ton more I could say, but I'll try to pull it together for my webpage.... Thanks, Anne Cady

    2. Thanks, Anne. And thank you for all you've done. I was wondering the same thing. There is a cemetery in Lisbon, NY that I'm interested in and I'm only two and a half hours from it. I was wondering how you do the inventories just in case I can get up to that one this fall or next spring. Do you have to contact the cementery managment to ask for a map or schematic of where each grave is. Or do you just go by the photographs and if so what order is best to go in? I have a good digital camera and could photograph them all. But then I wonder if a person would go blind trying to read the weathered data from each digital photo. Or do you record each stone with pencil and pad or laptop computer, entering the information as you go from grave to grave. Just some things I wonder about as I scan your wonderful work. Please share your secrets. Thanks. 1. Re: [NYSTLAWR] Re: Gouverneur, NY - Atwood Families
    2. I'd like to get more cemeteries online, but at the rate I'm going it will take decades. Brasher Falls and Norfolk are not very convenient for me (I don't know of hotels there, etc), but someday I would expect to get to them. Who knows, maybe someday I can move to St. Lawrence County and make this a bit easier and cheaper on the wallet (I spent over $1000 on hotel bills in Ogdensburg this year to do the Ogdensburgh City Cemetery). My early plans for next year are Union Cemetery in Rensselaer Falls, the old cemetery on the main road Morristown (I forget its name at the moment), Brier Hill Cemetery, and (if I think I can finish it) Notre Dame cemetery in Ogdensburg. I'm always open to other suggestions and am also willing to host any inventories that other people may volunteer to do. Thaks.

    3. Here is a link to St. Patrick's Cemetery in Brasher Falls. It is not complete. I have a transcription of Fairview Cemetery, located just outside the village. I would be happy to do a look-up for you. As far as I know, none of the Norfolk cemeteries are online. If your people lived in Brasher Township or Brasher Iron Works in the early years, they may have been buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Hogansburg. There are two- the old cemetery behind the church, and the new one on Route 37. Here is a link to that cemetery. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~frgen/franklin/franklin_index.htm Good luck with your search.
