It's important to note that Gladys was not mentioned as surviving her mother which may indicate that Gladys died prior to 1957. There was an obituary for Sidney Rich later--I don't remember the exact date right now--which did not mention any siblings at all. I didn't find any obituary for Edward in the Syracuse newspapers either. It may have been there but in a missing issue or may not have scanned well and not come up in the searches.

Thanks so much for the help. Sounds like the stories of her running away as a teenager were exagerated. The next step will probably be to find Edward's Obituary and will since he died May 8, 1935. There may be some mention of Gladys there. Thanks for your help!!

Surnames: Rich, Garrett Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2RB.2ACE/8326.1.1 Message Board Post: Anne, This is it! This is exactly what I needed. Gladys ran away when she was a teenager. My grandfather, her brother, called her a wild woman. There was some hint that she went to Key West and worked as a telephone operator, but this was just rumors. We couldn't even peg a birthdate for her. Now that we have an approximation, we have a place to start. I assume the census was taked in June or July of each year, so if she was not listed before June 1900, that her birthday would have to be after June 1900 and before June 1901 in order to be 9 yrs old in the 1910 Census. Thanks so much for your help! Oh, and are you planning to do any cemetery photographs of Grant's a/k/a French's cemeterys in Canton?
