In 1860 George was 6 years old and living in Richville with his mother who had remarried a John Wells. He was listed as George A. Wells on that census. Obviously they didn't bother to tell the census enumerator that he was a Spring. I'm guessing he's still with this family in 1870 and that's possibly why you couldn't find him.

    2. Russell Sprague
    3. NY had no requirement for the filing of birth records until about 1880 and you typically won't find many until the late 1880's. There was a brief attempt from about 1847 to 1851 but that is decades later than what you are looking for. Even the US census did not list names of children until 1850. If you can locate an obituary or cemetery headstone, they would likely be your best source of a birth date. 3. Mary, if you can locate your person in the 1850 census, the approximate birth year calculated from the age can be considered a legal link to the parents for purposes of joining an organization such as the DAR. I used a census entry combined with a death certificate to prove my grandmother's birth when I could turn up no birth record, family bible, baptismal record, etc. Since you know the town and the time frame for your person's birth, I would try the churches in Hopkinton, NY for a possible baptismal record. I have found some things in the censuses and newspapers but haven't really got too much along these lines. If you'd like to compare research, that would be great!
