Do you know what town the person lived in in the county? If not, then why post to this list? I know they were in St Lawrence county about the time he was born. The name is French, and is properly written with the little slash mark over the e, so I think would have been pronounced like Du-Bay.

Solomon could be a brother of Harry, and there is possibly an elder Solomon who fathered both Harry and my Solomon (my gr-gr-gr-grandfather). Solomon married, I believe, Mary Beach Parsons. They had a son Madison Hun Buck b. 1837 Sackets Harbor, Jefferson Co., NY (my gr-gr-grandfather). Madison married Helena Victoria Haskell in Lake Mills, Wisconsin and had a son Harry Madison Buck b. 1878 Delafield, Waukesha Co. Wis (my gr-grandfather). Harry's siblings were Edith Myrtle b. 1876, Martha Amelia b. 1880 and Wallace Chester b. 1881. There was also a half sister (the eldest) named Mary b.1868 who was a child of Madison's and his first wife, Margery. The names in both lines (Cynthia's and mine) seem similar....we both have a Harry, Solomon, and a Chester in common. The geography matches as well, since I know my Solomon and Madison were in Hammond and Gouverneur in the same ti! me frame as her family members. Solomon/Saloman/Salomon b. 1808 was in Maywood, Cook Co., Ill. from 1850 census on. His other children were: Elvira b.1832 NY, Martha Emelia/Amelia b. 1848 and Jessie O. b.1867. Harry Madison Buck married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Julia Scott b. 1880 ILL (d.o. Thomas Scott and Julia Smith) in 1904 and had my grandmother, Elizabeth Madison Buck 1906 in Rogers, AR. Lizzie's sister, Josephine (Jessie) b.1874 ILL also lived Benton County, AR around same timeframe and was married to Williard Morgan. Their daughter Virginia Livingston Morgan married William Randolph Harris from Texas. It is possible this Buck family is at least in part Native American. Thanks for any help, Nadia Graham

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2RB.2ACE/8345 Message Board Post: I need the help of others to find 2G-grandfather James Ezra MOORE. Following is all the information I have. born 14 Feb 1819, Ogdensberg, St Lawrence, NY at parents' home -- (unknown who parents are; mother's maiden name "DUBY" appears on a death document) died 20 May 1906, Bay City, Bay, MI married Emeline Arrozina IRISH 27 Sep 1847, Dundee, Monroe, MI Children: Royal Duwain, Lewis, Elva Julia, Lorenzo C, Ellen Sophia, Ezra Duaine, Meloria (sometimes MeloNia), Adeline (multiple spelling errors for names found in various places) ----- Family rumor says James Ezra didn't get along with his stepmother and ran away. At some point, he was working on a ship, one possibility is on the St. Lawrence River / St. Lawrence Seaway??? He was carrying an anchor... a very heavy one... It was mandatory to salute the captain of the ship when he passed by. He did not salute, or he would have dropped the anchor. The captain was angry, there was an argument, and James Ezra apparently threw the anchor at him. -- Part 1 of the story was that the captain was hurt... -- Part 2 of the story was that the captain was killed. James Ezra jumped ship and swam to shore... and got away? Because of name changes in 1860 & 1870 census (below), assume this happened between 1850 and 1860. We have several photos of this grandfather (piercing eyes), and ALWAYS his neck is covered. White scarf, unshaven, clean-shaven face with long, heavy neck hair, shirt buttoned clear up... The photo with the white scarf is especially noteworthy, because even though he is wearing a tie, the scarf is wrapped over the tie (crooked, not even tucked in to his shirt) and looks out of place. We are guessing maybe James Ezra did get caught... but they only stretched his neck a little before he got away! I believe once a person was hung - and survived - they were considered as having served their sentence and released... He is difficult to find in other censuses, maybe in hiding?, however: After his wife's death, he traveled MI state, supposedly living with various children. Before he was married, "James Moore" was a common name, and I don't have Emeline's easy-to-distinguish name for reference. Clues are: --since he jumped ship and swam ashore, he couldn't have been too far from land, (ocean or river is unknown). Census information: 1850 Census MI Monroe Dundee p23 (10 August) --Moore James, Emeline, "Leuis" - His own name with wife and son --(James E: age 30, Laborer, value of RE 100, born NY, no parent birthplace columns in this census; NOT marked that he cannot read/write) --(Emeline: age 23, born NY) --(Lewis: age 2, born MI) 1860 Census MI Lenawee Palmyra p 50 (Ancestry.com p 12) (15 June) --Moore Manes, Emeline + Children - Name change with same wife and child, plus additional children born since 1850 --(age 40, b NY, no parent birthplace columns in this census; NOT marked that he cannot read/write) 1870 census MI Manistee Arcadia p03 (12 July) --James Morren, wife and children are correct. --(age 50, born NY, both parents foreign birth, cannot read/write, US citizen) because of his changes in name and information, I cannot count on his "parents of foreign birth" as being accurate.

The records indicate that he was born in 1851. His death certificate says 1841 but I have to believe that since all of the re-enlistments support the date of 1851, I believe that this is correct. Are birth records available from that time? I believe that he was Catholic but cannot say that for sure. I do not know who the parents were. I am searching for any information available such as who the parents might have been or, perhaps, if he might have had any siblings. I have been searching for four years and this is the first solid information I have to go on. I will be happy to pay for any copies or postage. Kathleen Leveroni

I haven't been able to locate marriages for Ursule and Celeste, so I don't know what their married names would be. Joseph Gadbois died in New York some time between the 1840 and 1850 census. But Ursule and Celeste are not there and I can't find them under any possible corruption of Gadbois or Vandandaigue.
