Maybe the JP kept his own private records in his home. I would check with the Ogdensburg Public Library and see if they have anything .

    3. Here is a link to one of the Jefferson county pages (Champion is in Jefferson county which borders St. Lawrence county to the south). http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/champion.htm Suzanne Wiley is the town historian and I've heard she is very helpful with researchers. The webpage does not list an email address. I'm going to forward this note to the Jefferson county list. If Suzanne sees this or someone lets her know (and if she has an email address) possibly the two of you could connect. I suspect 'snail mail' from Australia would take a while! Russ Sprague Kensington, Maryland From: Marianne Punshon <mipunshon@optusnet.com.au> To: NYSTLAWR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYSTLAWR] Isaac Tripp Date: Wed, 15 Feb 2006 18:58:10 +1100 Hi All I have enjoyed being a 'silent' member of this list for some time and thank you all for your many posts that are helping me learn the history of this area. My ancestor Isaac Tripp, went to Rossie after the War of 1812 and worked as labourer for George Parish. It seems he later worked on boats on the Great Lakes, family legend having it that he was a boat captain. He moved to Champion, Jefferson County, NY in the mid 1820s and lived there for the rest of his life I have not been able to trace his parents, though it is likely he was born in NY State, perhaps in Saratoga. I am wondering if any of the Tripp researchers have any records of an Isaac Tripp who marries a Jennette Lawson. Jennette's family were Scots who lived in Middleville Ontario, Canada. It seems that there are at least two Benjamin Smiths in the Saint Lawrence area. So far I have found children of Benj. and Harmony-James Jason, Mary Jane, and William Henry. I can find nothing on a Lewis Smith which is also one of their sons. There is also a mention of a Fanny Raven who Bejnamin married after Harmony died. If anyone can help me with information on any of these, I would appreciate it. Than you.

Surnames: Tripp Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2RB.2ACE/5875.3.1 Message Board Post: I am doing this from memory so might not have all the details. This will be lengthy but is interesting. My grandfather, Lynn Sprague, operated a funeral home. He died about 1960 and my father was executor of the will. Among the belongins was a small metal box. In the box was an original civil war discharge paper which was in an envelope postmarked 1930 something from Pontiac, MI. Just to let you know ahead of time - I don't know where that discharge paper is and it drives me nuts because I always intended to give it over to a Tripp descendant should I ever find any. Get comfortable because this is a long story. The discharge paper was for Nathan Tripp. Since it was among stuff belonging to my grandfather, I thought he might be related so I wanted to do some researching. I live in the metro DC area and got down to the National Archives to see what might be there. Nathan had applied for a pension as a civil war soldier. The papers indicated this and that which might be wrong with him to the extent you think he might keel over any day but he did live to about 1932 or thereabouts - close to 90 years old I believe. He was denied a pension on the grounds of being a deserter. He had enlisted from NY state and at a later time from Michigan. I believe it was not uncommon for men to leave their regiments, go home to bring in crops or whatever and then re-enlist. The discharge paper probably was presented to my grandfather in the 1930's to get a discount on the funeral. Records indicate Nathan is buried in Riverside cemetery in Gouverneur, NY (my hometown) and I went to the place he should be buried but there is no headstone there. I figured he died poor and childless but I had no proof one way or another. I believe his pension papers did not list a wife or children. I was researching some old newspapers and found an article that mentioned the 'notorious' Nathan Tripp and I believe it mentioned Michigan. Apparently he was wanted on some burglary or robbery charge. I was sure I had all the papers in one place (pension, newspaper article and maybe the discharge paper). I was thinking I could put together a story for the historical society but when I searched for the papers could not find them. You likely could order a copy of the civil war papers from the national archives. I'm pretty sure he was discharged from a Michigan unit (not NY). If I can find the other papers mentioned, I will certainly try to contact you. Russ Sprague Kensington, Maryland

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2RB.2ACE/8368.1 Message Board Post: The following is from page 4 of the October 3, 1907 Massena Observer. Alfred Wilson Dodge, an old resident of Louisville, on the town line near the St. Lawrence river, died last Wednesday night, after a final illness of five days, although he had been in poor health for two years. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon, Rev. E. E. Day of Louisville, officiating, interment at Louisville Landing. Alfrew W. Dodge was a son of the late Eli Dodge and was born on Long Sault Island July 19, 1840, being one of a large family of children. About 1845 the family moved to what has always since been known as Dodge's Landing and Alfred purchased the farm just across the line in Louisville some years later. In 1860 he married Maria Whitman, of Dickinson, and to them were born three children, all living, Mrs. Albert Simser of Louisville, Newel Dodge, of Moira, and Mrs. Charles Burnap of Moira. His wife died in 1866, and in 1867 he married Miss Malinda E. Dewey of Louisville, and to them were born twelve children, of whom eight are living, Truman of Lebanon, N. H., Hiram G., of Ogdensburg, Anson E., of North Hartland, Vt., Fred G., of Windsor, Vt., Mrs. F. E. Dailey, of North Hartland, Vt., Mrs. Frank Richards, of Louisville, Mrs. H. H. Bellows, of Tupper Lake, and Mrs. J. F. Day, of Bombay. This wife died April 20, 1887. November 9, 1888 he married Miss Lillian A. Brown, of Osnabruck, Ont., who survives with three sons, Ray, Ward, and Myron. It is a curious fact that he and James Richards were born within a mile of each other, always lived in the same neighborhood, were nearly of an age, and were buried the same afternoon.

Born in 1865, died in 1893 per headstone found in Fort Jackson -Hopkinton cemetery located near the back of the cemetery next to his wife Matilda Gonyea 1864-1896. He had a son Elwin Royal Haverstock that moved to Vermont. Elwin married an Ellen Harvey. This is where I found Chauncy's name and Matilda, listed as parents on Elwin's marriage certificate Chauncy's parents are Edmund and Polly Benjamin Haverstock, both buried in Massena on North River Raquette Rd. with multiple other family members. Edmund and Polly came from Nova Scotia. There were other siblings:Shadrach,Loue Jane,Fredereick,Mary A., Lucian G. and Laban H. Chauncy's name appears as Chauncy,Chauncey as well as Jason on one of the census. My mother told the story that grandpa once commented "What do you expect from a man hung as a horse thief?" Grandma was livid and it was never mentioned again. True tale or bad joke? I know that there was much from Loue Jane who lived in the Massena area until her death I believe in her late eighties or early nineties. I heard that someone kept a diary of family history but I cannot find out who or where to locate them. any help is appreciated.
