Surnames: Pope, Polley Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2RB.2ACE/8424.3 Message Board Post: Hi Gerry, I received a message from Paul Kamalsky that you had posted a query in this forum. I am a descendant of Louisa Pope Polley, who was a daughter of Horatio Gates Pope and Eleanor (Ellen) S. Pohlman. Are you descended from Benjamin Franklin Pope, Louisa's brother? I know he moved to Tecumseh, Nebraska with his father and stepmother in the 1860's from Wisconsin. I have been hoping to get in touch with descendants of Louisa's family, A cousin of my mother threw out all the old letters and photos belonging to Louisa and Silas' son Frank Polley when he died in the 1950's. I have never seen a photo of Silas or Louisa and was hoping some family member might have one. Briefly, here is some information on Louisa and Silas' descendants: They had three children, Frank S. m. Marie Jacobi in Chicago 1890; Hattie m. William Gunderson Chicago; and Charles, of whom I have not been able to find any information. I also don't know much about Hattie other than what I found in the census. Frank S. Polley and Marie Jacobi had three children, Virginia m. Lambert Drenthe; Pauline m. Frank Grabert and Raymond m. Grace Schreuder. Raymond Polley and Grace Schreuder are my grandparents. Most of the descendants of this family still live in the Chicago area. My gggrandfather Silas H. Polley served 4 years in the Union Army in the Civil War; first in the 14th Illinois Infantry, then the 14th and 15th Veteran Battalion, and finally in the 135th USCT. Silas and Louisa were married by Rev. C.D. Pillsbury, who had served as a chaplain in Benjamin Franklin Pope's regiment (22nd WI, I think). I've always wondered how Silas and Louisa met. Silas was also born in NY, in Cortland Co. Did they meet in NY somehow, or in WI or in Illinois where they lived all their married lives? Laura Poll(e)y, Louisa's older sister, was married to a William Poll(e)y, but I have no idea if or how William was related to Silas. I have never been able to find Silas' family in NY. Do you (outside of Paul Kamalsky) already have any of this information on Louisa? I've always wondered if Louisa kept in touch with her father and brothers and sisters. I have more information on this family and some corrections to Paul's info. Please let me know if you need any more information and if there is any knowledge of Louisa & Silas in your family. Thank you, Barbara McDonald
The best way to look for people you think are missing is to go through the census images page by page for a particular location. For a big place, this is a "big" chore. Back in the days when one had no online indexing, I did find some families on microfilm by going through one Broome Co. town page by page. They had been missing from the printed census indexes since the names were difficult to read on the film. Having already figured out some of the family, I could fill in the blanks and finally discovered this large family whose names had been floating around in my research unidentified. Which reminds me for one census in particular I should go to Ancestry and see if the correct head of household is indexed correctly there. Maybe their indexers could not read the entry any better than the book indexer! We all do later researchers a favor when we inform Ancestry of the correct name or names once we find who we are looking for. Hi Kathy Sometimes people are missing in the Census. They got missed by the Census Taker or they were moving at the time they were taken. You did not say how you were searching. If you are using Ancestry.Com many are not indexed but if you go through page by page you will find. them. Ancestry also has the names on the Index wrong in many cases. One reason I like the microfilms. Also Northern Upstate NY does not always seem to be complete with Ancestry. They do things in bits and pieces and then update from time to time. St. Lawrence County can be a problem so I resort to another Census Source. Pat R
Has anyone had any problems with not finding people who lived in Potsdam Village in 1930? I have several people who I am positive that should be there, but they are all missing. I was curious if someone thinks part of the census could be missing for Potsdam Village, or if, for some reason they were all left off the census? Thanks! Kathy

I'm not sure if they have ever been microfilmed. If a trip to Canton would not be feasible and if you would consider hiring a paid researcher, the SLCHA (St. Lawrence county historical association) could refer one to you. If they have been microfilmed, you could check at www.familysearch.org to see if the LDS has a copy. Not sure whether ancestry.com would have images. Sometimes these records are very complete and informative. Hope this helps - Russ Sprague Kensington, Maryland

Census records of the time did not list children's names. Your best bet may be a search of the indexed wills and probate records at the county courthouse in Canton. It's a bit of a long shot but you might find inheritance papers listing 'my son' or 'my daughter', etc. If a trip to Canton is not feasible and you would consider hiring a local researcher, you could contact the SLCHA (St. Lawrence County Historical Assn) for a referral. Hi Russell Thank you for taking the time to reply to my message. I have found this link and actually visited Champion and met with Suzanne last year and she was very helpful taking us to the Champion cemetery and locating the graves of Isaac and some other family members. Visit www.usgenweb.org and click thru to St. Lawrence county. From 'select a link' choose 'Anne Cady'. Anne made that transcription available. Also be sure to check the indexed cemetery photos. You may find photos of headstones for these people. There may be further info in the 'births, deaths, marriages' from the Gouverneur Herald. If you can make a trip to the county courthouse in Canton, several of the NY state censuses are available there in addition to indexed land records, wills and probate. You local library may have a subscription to ancestry.com or heritagequest.com and computers with a hi speed connection to view the images. These services have census images (often not indexed). Gouverneur was (and is) a small town - you can search the entire town without an index. Hope this helps - Russ Sprague Kensington, Maryland

Hi All I have enjoyed being a 'silent' member of this list for some time and thank you all for your many posts that are helping me learn the history of this area. My ancestor Isaac Tripp, went to Rossie after the War of 1812 and worked as labourer for George Parish. It seems he later worked on boats on the Great Lakes, family legend having it that he was a boat captain. He moved to Champion, Jefferson County, NY in the mid 1820s and lived there for the rest of his life I have not been able to trace his parents, though it is likely he was born in NY State, perhaps in Saratoga. I am wondering if any of the Tripp researchers have any records of an Isaac Tripp who marries a Jennette Lawson. Jennette's family were Scots who lived in Middleville Ontario, Canada.
