Van Hoyt, You are probably on the right track sticking close to the Mormon Smith line in your research, as not only was Joseph Smith, Jr. from Sharon, VT, his grandfather Asa(h)el SMITH and many other SMITH family members, lived and died in the area of Stockholm, St. Lawrence Co., NY. Asahel SMITH died in Stockholm NY in October, 1830. Three months earlier his son Joseph Smith, Sr. came to town to baptize his father, which according to the LDS Biography/Encyclopedia, caused quite a family stir, particularly with Jos. Sr's brother, my GGG Jesse SMITH. I have searched my FTM files and found a Mariah SMITH born 1677 Topsfield, MA, the daughter of Robert SMITH b 1626 Kirton, Lincolnshire, England and Mary FRENCH b 1634 Boston, Suffolk, MA. They are in the direct Mormon SMITH line, so perhaps your Mariah SMITH's name was passed down in the family. In my file, I also found a David Hyrum SMITH b 1863, Desseret, Millard, UT the son of Silas SMITH b 1822 Stockholm NY and Sarah ORTON. David is the GG grandson of Asahel SMITH, so perhaps the name David was again passed on in the family. In case you have not seen this, on the 1840 US Census for Stockholm, NY, several households above Harry MARSH are Lewis(?) MARSH and Isaac MARSH. No SMITH's are listed on that census page. And on the 1850 Stockholm NY census, Isaac MARSH is living next household to Harry and Maria MARSH. Wish I could help you more in finding Mariah SMITH's line. Best of luck, Diana Chapman Owen Van Hoyt wrote: Hi, Any chance you might have something on a Maria(h) Smith that married Harry Marsh in 1830? She was born in 1806 in Chazy, Clinton County, NY, the Smith family apparently left the Chazy area when things got hot during the War of 1812, moved to Vermont, and Maria(h) came with Harry to live in Stockholm, St.Lawrence Co, NY for the rest of her life. She died in 1895. She is buried in Holmes Hill Cemetery, Stockholm, NY. She is my grandmother, and I am STRUGGLING to find her ancestry. The death record says her parents are David Smith and Eunice_________, both born Vermont. I can ONLY find David Smith and Eunice from Maine (that didn't pan out) and Conn, md to a Eunice Peck. ( That might still lead to something.) Harry Marsh lived in Sharon, Vermont area with his brothers and father, Isaac Marsh. Isaac's father, James, was a Rev. War soldier. Since the Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith Jr came from the same area in Vermont, I have always wondered if there might be a connection to that family. Thanks for reading this. Fingers crossed. Van Hoyt
Hello? Who were they and how many attended school there? Might be a connection but need additional information. Pat R
WOW! What a great group! Thank you for the help (and speedy too!) The info you've all sent me has given me some answers and MORE questions of course. -- The Ormsby chart shows Matilda's maiden name as Cook - but everything else I've found says Hart -- however - Lucinda's (2nd wife) daughter thought her mother's name was Cook. From the census it looks like it could have been Chapman and not Cook or she married a Chapman who died real quick. Diane, I'm going to answer you off list - so if you don't receive something from me by tomorrow please write me at eljace@aol.com I have access through NEHGS to Massachusetts Vital records for approx 1850 - 1890 right now if someone needs a lookup - not all records online yet but most are. Thanks again all Luanne Three Rivers, MA
Can anyone explain why so many young people from the Macomb area attended school in Richfield Springs in the late 1800s? Richfield Springs is in Otsego county, quite a distance away.

Viola was the daughter of Solomon Ethridge and Margaret Storrin, and had at least 8 siblings. I have considerable info on the Ethridge & Storrin families, if you are interested. I am very interested in what you have on Viola & Edwin, also how that Nelson Beebe ties into a Nelson Beebe born in the early 1900s, to John and Elizabeth Jackson Beebe. There is a transcription and index to the 1870 census for St. Lawrence county at the county site under www.usgenweb. This family is listed in Stockholm. Hiram is 64, born in VT, Lucinda is 37, born in Canada, and four children are listed. This doesn't get you her maiden name but might be a start. There are *many* other good resources to check at the county site including cemetery, church, newspaper and other records. By law, each NY state town has a town historian. There is a listing of town officials at the county site which should list one for Stockholm. The historian may have more leads. Marriage records were not kept until the 1880's with best results from the later 1880's. I believe his first was to Matilda Hart and the 2nd to Lucinda ??. The second would have been approximately between 1860 and 1870. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Not having done any research in New York - what would be the best way to locate records for families in this town? Any info or suggestions greatly appreciated. Some members of my Loughrey family came to St. Lawrence county from Montgomery County shortly after 1800; my own direct line joined them in the early 1830s. The Loughreys lived in Louisville Landing. My 3G-grandfather, Charles Loughrey died 7 Mar 1837 and is buried in the old cemetery at Louisville Community Church with a number of other family members. My question is what happened to his widow Catherine? I have no trace of her after her husband's demise. I believe she was a Barkley. She was in her 40s when widowed, so she may well have married again. Any thoughts from anyone? Thanks, Fran
Luanne, Per the 1870 Stockholm NY census below, which indicates Lucinda LARNARD has a 14 year old son named Frederick, I think there is a strong possiblity she may be Lucinda CHAPMAN with a 4 year old son Freddy, as on the 1860 census I sent previously to the list. This is exciting ! I always wondered what happened to Lucinda and Freddy, as after her father Hiram CHAPMAN died, everyone else in the family moved to Kasota, LeSueur Co., MN (abt 1867). 1870 US Census, Stockholm, St. Lawrence Co., NY LARNARD, Hiram, 64, b VT LARNARD, Lucinda, 37, b Canada LARNARD, Frederick, 14, b NY LARNARD, Elmer, 8, b NY LARNARD, Emma, 5, b NY LARNARD, Elroy, 10 mos, b NY I hope to her from you. I have much ancestry on the Hiram CHAPMAN - Mary/Polly SMITH families. Hiram CHAPMAN is descended from Roger Williams of RI and Polly SMITH is first cousin to Joseph SMITH, Jr, the Mormon prophet.
