    1. Walling, Sprague, Beardslee, Hewitt, Thompson, Hills
    2. Russell Sprague
    3. Grabbed this from the www.fultonhistory.com site and thought I would put it on the list. I am related to the Walling family via a Hills-Walling marriage. Mrs. Lynn Sprague (Grace Mix) was the daughter of E. Davis Mix and Clara Lovina Hills. From the Watertown Daily Times of July 13, 1917. Old Residents Return Gouverneur, July 13 - Quincy Walling of Mount Pleasant, Mich., formerly of this town, has arrived here to spend a few days visiting friends. He is accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Lyal Beardslee, and her two daughters of Wilmington, Delaware, who are touring in thier car. They visited Vermont and the Adirondacks before coming here, and they go from here to the Thousands (sic) Islands for a short stay. Mrs. Beardslee was formerly Miss Florine Walling, who for some years taught in the schools of this village. They have been visiting at the home of C.W. Hewitt, James Thompson, Lynn Sprague and others. While a resident of this town, Mr. Walling owned and conducted what is now known as the Poole farm on Clinton street road.

Surnames: CAMERON WINTERS von REYN AMES PALON FERMAZIN Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2RB.2ACE/8478 Message Board Post: CAMERON WINTERS vonREYN genealogy---CAMERON WINTERS vonREYN Re Genealogy I am trying to find out if there is a local genealogy society in Ogdensburg. I want to find out how to get some birth records and marriage records of my ancestors who lived there. Do you thing you could point me in the correct direction. Most Appreciative, William von Reyn Buena Park, California My mother was born in Ogdensburg, New York to William Cameron and Elizabeth Winters. I am wondering if my grandfather William “Bill” Cameron is mentioned in your book. He was a laborer and also helped build some school buildings or county buildings in Ogdensburg. He is buried in the cemetery in Ogdensburg that has three sections. He was in the Protestant section. We have a family story that my grandfather Bill Cameron got in a fight with another man when he was about age and had to leave the county because he thought he had killed him but he had only knocked him out and later came back home to Ogdensburg. My mother Maude Cameron (born 1903) at age 17and her sister were written up in an Ogdensburg newspaper when they were about 17 years old because they made a cross country trip from Ogdensburg to Los Angeles California with her sister Catherine by themselves as two young women. My great grandfather was James Cameron married to Rachel Unknown. Lived in Ogdensburg in 1870 at age 39.and was born in Scotland in 1831 and came to Ogdensburg by way of Canada. His wife Rachel was born in Candada. I am wondering if you have any history on the Scots or Canadians who lived in Ogdensburg. My other great grandfather was James Winters from Ireland age 32 in 1870 who lived in Ogdensburg. His wife was Elizabeth. They were Irish immigrants. His daughter Elizabeth married my James Cameron (above) My dad Everhard Harvey von Reyn used to run bootleg whiskey in up state New York out of Ogdensburg in the 1920’s. I am wondering if there are any references to any of these families in your St. Lawrence County Almanacs. Thank you for your time, William von Reyn Buena Park, California

There was no United States until the American Revolution. The U.S. constitution was signed in 1787. Not sure what you could find but good luck! Russ Sprague Kensington, Maryland

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2RB.2ACE/8475.3 Message Board Post: Ogdensburg News, Sept. 30, 1916 Here's a copy/paste SURVIVOR OF OLD INDIAN WAR JOHN HURST OF LISBON ONE OF THREE LEFT—WENT TO COLORADO REUNION. A Colorado paper received here contains an account of the eighteenth annual encampment of the Beecher Island Battle Memorial Association, held at Wray, Col., to attend which John Hurst, a veteran of Lisbon, St. Lawrence county, crossed The continent. The celebration marked the 48th Anniversary of the the battle, and it was attended by a gathering of 7,000 persons. Three survivors were present, the others besides Mr. Hurst being J. J. Peate, of Beverly Kas., and Thomas Ranahan of Boise, Ida. This was Mr. Hurst’s first visit to the scene of the battle since 1868. Mr Peate has been present at every reunion of the association and Mr. Ranahan at all but two. The celebration lasted three days and was one of the most important gatherings ever held in that part of Colorado. Official representatives of three states, Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas were present. The Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls and other organizations assisted. Mr. Hurst, who is past 75, greatly enjoyed the reunion and expressed appreciation of what the people of the district were doing to commemorate the battle between his comrades of the Forsythe Scouts and the Indians under Chief Roman Nose. Soon after reaching his majority in 1851, Mr. Hurst left St. Lawrence county for the California gold fields. He was in the far west when the war began and enlisted in a California regiment, serving three years. His regiment took the place of regulars in Southern Arizona and New Mexico, and served the entire three years on the frontier. At the close of the war, Hurst located in Kansas and engaged with the government as freighter and scout. He was so engaged when General Sheridan called for 50 volunteers to accompany Colonel Forsythe and Lieutenant Beecher on the expedition that ended with the Battle of Beecher Island. Mr. Hurst is to spend the winter in Southern California.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/2RB.2ACE/8475.2 Message Board Post: Here is the text of the obit from the Watertown Daily Times (accessible at www.fultonhistory.com): "Watertown Daily Times John Hurst Ogdensburg, April 20 - John Hurst, a well known resident of Lisbon, died Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Armstrong, on the Canton road near Ogdensburg following a brief illness from pneumonia. HIs wife died during the past week after a long illness. When Mr. Hurst was also stricken he was removed to his daughter's to be cared for. He was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist church. Services will be held in the church at Flackville tomorrow at 1pm, (standard time)." Reading between the lines, I'd say there is a good chance he is buried in Flackville Cemetery which is actually in Lisbon (its also known as Campbell Cemetery). There is also a short article on the site as well showing that his wife died April 12th of the same year. There are articles from 1923 for an Elizabeth Hurst (aged 79) who died in Lisbon and was buried in Flackville (Campbell) cemetery. Lastly, if you go to the Fulton History site and search there newspapers for the following (including quotes): "INDIAN WAR JOHN HURST", there is a fairly long article from 1916 that talks about John Hurst and his activities in the Indian war. Its from the Ogdensburg Newspaper. Hope this helps, Anne Cady

Surnames: O'Connell, Mahoney Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2RB.2ACE/8474.1 Message Board Post: Depending on what other responses you get, you may want to repost your note to indicate why it is posted on the St. Lawrence county, NY message board. You don't know where they married but put a message on this county board for a reason. The county was formed in 1802 from parts of 3 other counties. If they married after 1880 there is a chance that a town clerk would have a record. Do you have the names of parents for either person? Do you have a birth or death date for either person? Depending on when they got married there may be no record, there may be a newspaper notice or there may be a record in a town clerk's office. Note also that I added the bride's maiden name to the subject line. Someone with Mahoney info might be able to jump in on the discussion. Hope this helps - Russ Sprague Kensington, Maryland
