It's about 3 miles out of Cranberry. If you take the Tooley Pond Road north out of Cranberry Lake, it's the left turn toward Newton Falls. (Do a Google Maps http://maps.google.com/ search for "cranberry lake ny to newton falls ny"; Cook's Corners is where the route takes a left and is labelled "Clifton". If you go to the satellite or hybrid view, you'll see Cook Pond. You'll also, in various places, find it called 'Windfall', after a tornado which touched down there in the late 1800s. There may be a few permanent residents; mostly, it's camps and hunting 'lodges'. Or do a Mapquest http://mapquest.com/ search for 'cook corners' - Note the spelling... - it comes up directly. (Saint Lawrence County trivia - While you're at Mapquest, do a search for 'Newbridge, NY' - it's on the Tooley Pond Road, a few miles south of DeGrasse; population 0, and has been for at least half a century. Last time I was up there, you could barely make out the foundations of 3-4 houses. Mapmakers do this to help protect their copyright. If a map shows up with Newbridge on it, they have a pretty good idea where you got it from.) Joe -- Joe Makowiec can be reached at: http://makowiec.org/contact/?Joe http://makowiec.org/
Here is what I found in "Claims to Names" Eben - Railway Station in the town of Potsdam. Looking at a map, to get to Eben from Crary Mills you'd go north on 66 for about 4 miles. Eben is at the intersection of 66 and the Conrail Railroad. . Giffen's Corners - Can't find this in any book, but if you take Howardville Rd west out of Crary Mills, the first street coming off to the north is Giffen Road. The road only looks to be a couple miles long with about 3 intersections, so I'd guess one of those intersections is "Giffen's Corners". Cook's Corners - There are a couple similar names in St. Lawrence, but most likely in Pierrepont, to the south-east of Canton. The only directions I find are some for Cook's Corners cemetery. It is on Wilson Road (Higley Area). Directions are Gulf Road to Green Road, then to Wilson Road. So, from Crary's Mill you would go south to Route 68, then take 68 to Gulf, then Green, then Wilson....or you could cut from 68 to Hanson Road, then Green, then Wilson. Hope this helps some. My NY state map book is getting frayed, but I think I read the street names corrrectly. Anne Cady Manassas, VA

A. Wood of Nicholville. My fourth great grandfather Stephen Peabody Meacham is one member of a band of Mormon converts that left Hopkinton in 1844, only to find Nauvoo, Illinois, and the Mormon life, did not prove the haven , which they had anticipated. And in fact, they found that it was much easier to join the Mormons than to disassociate themselves from them. Norman Meacham, a cousin of Stephen, was murdered trying to get away, Stephen got away. But the Mormon's held his wife and children. I would love to have a copy of the article, if someone could copy it for me. Thank You Jerry R. Smith
Can someone give me an idea of where Eben, Giffen's Corners, and Cook's Corners are in relation to Canton? I've been spending some time looking for Vaughan, Vaughn, Forbes, and Emerson references in both the Canton and Potsdam papers that are on line and the above locations keep popping up. My grandparents came from the Crary Mills and Langdon Corners area and I'm familiar with those but I never heard of the other places and I couldn't find them on the county map that's on the St. Lawrence county web site. Consider that maybe that site does not have a death notice for this person. The search facility is pretty basic, you find stuff or you don't. They add new papers over time so you might try again later. Also try this site: http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/nysnp/ which has information on papers available on microfilm via interlibrary loan (you initiate the request at your local library if they have a microfilm reader). I checked the Fulton site and didn't find the obit fro Andrew LeVieu that you wanted, but I didn't really expect to. They don't have any Potsdam papers of that vintage scanned. You can see what papers they have by clicking on the Newspaper Index button on the upper right of the screen at http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html . I also checked the Northern NY Newspaper site ( http://news.nnyln.net/ ), but they also don't have Potsdam papers that far back, though they do have Potsdam papers back to 1897. I checked the Potsdam papers anyways but the name LeVieu doesn't appear in any articles between 1897 and 1951. Sorry, Anne Cady Manassas, VA

This message was sent to me from an Irish research group member. I searched for my deceased husband's REGULA, WONSOWICZ, WILKEY, & GOODEY lines and was pleased to find several entries. In my excitement, I forgot to check for my other lines. Have fun and please pass this along. Carol -------------------- Chicago online obituary archive An online obituary archives is available for the Chicago (Illinois) Tribune, with a search engine which goes back to the 1870s. Of course, the best obits are in the time period of 1900 to 1930 or so, when newspapers had space for longer articles and employed staff to write them up. Below is an example. http://tinyurl.com/9yoed I am told by a Chicago Irish descendant that the better newspaper for Irish-Americans was the Chicago Daily News.

She is survived by her husband, who is a well known stone mason, and three daughters, Catherine, Maude and Dorothy; a brother, William Winters of this city, and three sisters, Mrs. Harry Dunn of this city, Mrs. W. In the article below, I'm pretty sure the 'Hill' mentioned should be 'Hills'. Does anyone reading this know the first name of the 'Mr. Layton' mentioned? This is interesting because ususally you get the man's name but not the woman's name. The article below is from the Watertown Daily times of June 1913. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gouverneur, June 13 (1917) Mrs. Lynn Sprague arrived home late Monday night from Glens Falls, where she was called a few days previously by the illness of her aunt, Mrs. Helen Layton, a former resident of this section. Mrs. Layton died a day after Mrs. Sprague arrived at her bedside in the Glens Falls hospital. Mrs. Layton was born near Natural Dam in this town about 70 years ago, her maiden name being Hill. Her early life was spent here but after her marriage to Mr. Layton, a contractor , she had since lived in New York, Utica and Fort Edward. For a year or two past she had lived with a relative at the latter place and when taken seriously ill she was removed to the Glens Falls hospital. Mrs. Layton's husband died many years ago. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Russ Sprague Kensington, Maryland
