William Allen was born in 1813 in Russell. I have quite a bit of research on Nathaniel Allen's family and would be happy to compare notes.

I have a Samuel Allen, died Feb 27, 1864 buried in Trout Brook Cemetery or (Dixon Cemetery) in Madrid, NY. It states he is over 100 years old, but the other Samuel I have, was born, April 15, 1773 in Bennington Co., Vt. (Confusing because there might be two in St. Lawrence Co., possibly). I have a copy of his Will. He was the first settler of Waddington, town of Madrid about 1797, coming through Plattsburgh, NY where his son, Nathaniel was born. The LDS has a transcription of the 1880 census for the entire country at www.familysearch.org (click advanced search, then census). There are 2 Samuel Allens listed who were born 1825 and living in NY but neither is in St. Lawrence county. You might want to research those two or do a country search but then again you are not sure if he lived to be 55. Good luck - Russ Sprague Kensington, Maryland

Hello ? You requested a reply regarding the 1870 Census. Can I make a suggestion to at least give a first name as people are more apt to reply to a name. I have checked my Census Records and I do not come up with Royal Lawrence for 1870. It is possible he was process of moving and missed the Census in both his prior home and where he was moving to. Could I suggest that you consider checking the 1865 State Census, Directories and see if they will show anything for him. The LDS (Mormon) Church Family History Center nearest you would be able to order it for a small Fee of $5.50 and you could then view it on their reader. If you live in the area you could call the St Lawrence County Historical Society and see if they have the State Census available. Good Luck Pat R
Try www.rootsweb.com/~nystlawr. look under Ann Cady, it might be indexed there. ----- Original Message ----- From: <sandhb@comcast.net> To: <NYSTLAWR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 20, 2006 8:04 PM Subject: [NYSTLAWR] 1870 Census Index > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Lawrence, Elliott, Grow > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2RB.2ACE/8508 > > Message Board Post: > > If someone has an index to the1870 census for St Lawrence Co., I would > like to know what page Royal Lawrence [sp?] is listed on. > I DO have access to census records, but not an index. > Royal is listed in Stockholm in 1850 and 1860; in 1880 he is in > Hopkinton. >

Some public libraries have a subscription to heritagequest.com and/or ancestry.com. Many censuses are not indexed but you can go page by page thru the small northern NY towns and often find who you are looking for. I can do that from my home with a valid library card number for the Montgomery county (MD) library system. Check with your local library. If you have a nearby college they may offer the same service. It generally will not matter if you are not a student. If you are a tax paying local citizen then you are likely supporting the school and some of their services are open to you.
