For the record, folks, I am not averse to changing or annotating the records I have transcribed and uploaded to the county site at usgenweb. I've done this in the past upon request. Almost always it comes down to handwriting that could be interpreted more than one way. It is the nature of people to make mistakes and handwriting can often be interpreted more than one way. I like the approach Rootsweb takes with its volunteer donated databases. Rootsweb has a 'post it' note feature where you can indicate an interest in a surname or offer further detail. I donated the Gouverneur Herald 'births, deaths, and marriages' to that site and have seen some cases where people have attached notes to some entries. My highest concern there is that people will change email addresses when they change internet providers and often leave a broken trail behind. I will now and then post notes recommending that people get one of the major free accounts (hotmail or yahoo) for example that are likely to be around for years to come. As you change internet providers, your email address remains the same. When you change providers, there is no requirement that you use their email address (ex. my provider now is Verizon but I've never used a Verizon email address). The church records transcriptions are not a primary source but can provide valuable clues. As much as possible, you want to visit courthouses, churches, town historians, and your oldest living relatives for good info. The best stuff is that which concurs with other independent sources. The St Lawrence County Church records were transcribed but Russell Sprague and I have copies of the original records. If anyone wants a copy of the original page we are both able to furnish a copy. ----- Original Message ----- From: <PNUTREG@cs.com> To: <NYSTLAWR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 28, 2006 11:34 PM Subject: Re: [NYSTLAWR] Re: St. Lawrence County Church Records Website > Brenda > > If errors were made in the transcription of any original record it takes > away > from it being acceptable or used for documentation. At the bottom of the first page is a clickable 'mail to' link. It leads to me at hotmail. Please give it a try to let me know it works. Let me know the date and type of record and I can probably correct it this weekend. Good to know anyone is actually reading the records! Brenda If errors were made in the transcription of any original record it takes away from it being acceptable or used for documentation. One cannot make a correction (error in spelling could be due to lack of education in many era's). That original document has to remain as it was orignally written whether you like it or not. Once a transcription or original document has been rewritten or transcribed differnetly it is Nil and Void as far as using it in a lineage organization (also transcription cannot be used period), only proven genealogical information of proven value can be used as a record. So that is your all that you can use for your document whether you like it or not. To clarify for your information if the person who transcripted it for the website changed it to their interprutation of what the spelling or any thing else should be that means it is no longer is considered as a document and cannot be used for any lineage organization and does not make your genealogical record authenic. Many of our well intented transcribers have decided it was their duty to make corrections or changes in genelogicial tanscriptions that they write up. However it is not the correct way to do it. kWho has the authority to determine the difference in commision to do whatever. Good Luck Pat R

I tried it directly from the previous email in this thread. If you do a google search 'church records of st lawrence county' that will display a working link. Note also that if you go to the county page for St. Lawrence county at www.usgenweb.org you can access the church records and *much* more including a transcription of the 1870 census, many cemetery records and newspaper records. I hope I'm not repeating anyone else's info here. I was away for a few days, had a big pile of emails to catch up with and deleted a few w/o reading them. By law, each NY state town has a town historian. If you go to the St. Lawrence county webpage at usgenweb.org, click 'places' then 'roster of officials' you can find the historian for Massena. I'm not sure if it is up to date but that list says Gloria S. Johnson, River Rd East, Morristown, NY 16664 is town historian for Massena. Phone is 315-375-6704. No email address is listed. It's pretty hard to find much prior to the civil war. If wills, probate and land records would help, they do date back to the county's formation in 1802 and they are indexed in large books at the county courthouse. The St. Lawrence county historical association could recommend a local researcher for hire if a trip to the county offices is not convenient. You might also try the LDS family history center at Potsdam for more info. I don't have their address and phone number at hand but go to www.familysearch.org and click on info for family history centers. I do appreciate it. I was hoping someone could tell me about the Rebecca Dutton who died in 1849. I am looking for a Rebecca Stearns from NH that MIGHT have married Reuben Dutton. Many times brothers from one family married sisters from another family. I am from the Stearns family and have a Dolly Stearns that married a Moses Dutton in NH. They went to Ft. Covington NY, Ill., and settled in Paw Paw Mich. Dolly had a sister, Rebekah, but I haven't been able to find her after 1820 in NH. Another sister Susan married a Crowell and had a son named Harvey. I found a record of him that said he went to Massena NY to visit his UNCLE, Reuben Dutton. It all makes sense. I found a Rebecca Dutton that died in 1849 in Massena and would like to think that is my Rebekah. I was hoping that Massena might have a town history book that might say where they came from, etc, Thanks agin, Leslie Stearns Mason -----Original Message----- From: Russell Sprague [mailto:russxsprague@hotmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, April 26, 2006 9:39 PM To: bnl03055@yahoo.com; NYSTLAWR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYSTLAWR] Reuben Dutton Family Massena NY There is a transcription of the 1870 census at the county site under usgenweb.org.
