    1. Unknown CHAPMAN d 1856-1860, son of Hiram & Mary/Polly SMITH CHAPMAN, brother of Zenas, Julius, Levi, & Sarah CHAPMAN
    2. Diana Owen
    3. Does anyone have access to cemetery information to look for an unknown male CHAPMAN who would have died 1856 to 1860 (under the age of 30) in the Stockholm NY area? I am searching for the Unknown CHAPMAN spouse of Lucinda WILLISTON CHAPMAN LEONARD. He would have been born probably in the 1820-1830's to Hiram and Mary Polly SMITH CHAPMAN, who lived on what is now Blind Crossing Rd, No. Stockholm, NY. On the 1860 US Census, Stockholm, St. Lawrence Co., NY, Lucinda (WILLISTON) CHAPMAN has a four year old son named Freddie CHAPMAN and they are both living with Hiram and Mary Polly SMITH CHAPMAN. Lucinda later married widow Hiram LEONARD and per census, Fred/Freddie took on the surname of LEONARD. I have checked Brookdale cemetery online, which I believe is the closest to Blind Crossing Rd. Mary Polly SMITH's father Jesse SMITH and grandfather Asahel SMITH, I believe are buried in East Part Cemetery, so that is a possibility. Any help or suggestions in finding unknown CHAPMAN, d 1856-1860 would be greatly appreciated, Diana Chapman Owen

    3. The earliest census to list parent and child names was 1850. The earliest records kept by the county were land records, wills and probate. If Nelson was a land owner you may find something in the land records at the county courthouse in Canton, NY. If a trip to the courthouse is not convenient and if hiring a local research might work for you, you could contact the St. Lawrence Historical association for a recommendation. Search 'slcha' and a link to their site will display. It's a tough period to try to find anything. The county was formed in 1802 from parts of 3 other counties. A great part of the county was wilderness in the early 1800's. 2. I've been getting very informative information on my DeLong query so I'll try for a Taylor family who had a daughter Lydia born ca 1826 in NY. I don't know her parents names but she married Anthony DeLong. She named her daughters Louisa, Margaret, Rachael, Josephine and Jeannette. Her only son William Adolphus. As this was Anthony's second marriage (and he didn't name any of his sons after himself or his father Peter) I would tend to think her parents names are in here somewhere. Any help or advice appreciated. Peggy Large UE "I'd rather die while I'm living than live while I'm dead" thanks to Jimmy Buffett!

He moved to Wisconsin (Dodge County) in the 1840s. Eventually, he moved also to both Nebraska and finally to Idaho. I have his death certificate from 1918 that states that his father was named Peter. It is possible that Lewis is one of the several children of Peter. I have some information that states that other children moved to Wisconsin if you want to share.

One must be careful when talking about sampling and the Census. There are different forms used, and who gets which is decided on a sampling basis. However, the Census does attempt to enumerate everyone - it does try to "touch" every household (to the extent possible). There was quite a controversy over this at the time of the 2000 Census. The Census Bureau proposed, and most of academia supported, the use of sampling methodology to achieve a single best guess count. The main issue is that there are systematic under counts in some areas (especially urban areas with high concentrations of emigrant populations), and the only way to adjust the counts is by some educated guessing. The under counts, of course, have important political impact through the allocation of seats in the House. Here is one discussion of the sampling issue: < http://www.sciencenews.org/pages/sn_arc99/3_6_99/bob1.htm>. Note the Supreme Court decision that prohibits the use of sampling "to obtain population figures for determining how many of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives go to each of the 50 states. " None of this is to say that the Census actually does "touch every household" or enumerate every citizen. Nobody knows better than genealogists how badly the Census can fail. Chris Lyttle At 09:05 PM 5/6/2006, you wrote: Wow - that is a trip to the past and a look to the future.  In 1960 it asks for various housing value ranges where the top dollar amount is $35,000 plus.  Hmmm, now what would I get in the metro DC area for that kind of money? Based on a quick look, I think the last time the whole nation got the same questionnare was 1950.  If the current methods stay put (census released after 70 years), that one will become public in 2020.  I think after that things will go downhill somewhat as sampling was used rather than the census bureau trying to 'touch' every household. Fortunately there are many other records to search - church, newspaper, cemetery, wills, land records, etc. that cover the 10 year gaps between the cenuses. When Mrs Allen was 18 years old the family came to Moulinette, Ont., and four years later moved to Massena and in 1895, as stated above, she married Mr Allen. Besides her children she is survived by five brothers, John Wolstenholme, who is in the Canadian Northwest, Walter Wolstenholme, of Massena , George H. Wolstenholme of West Stockholm, Frank Wolstenholme of Norwood and Herbert Wolstenholme of Louisville; also one sister, Mrs. Thomas Lettis, of Massena. The bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends in their double sorrow. ( The 1895 date for Ethan for his birth and marriage is what is in the obit.)
