She married John Rath in Ogdensburg NY. They had one child Patricia. Irene gave birth to her July 1924 and died a few days later, leaving her for her sister Josephine to raise. Their brother was Emery Ferguson and their father was Joseph. I am having difficulty finding out anything more. I have heard that the Ferguson name was actually a French Canadian name called Faubert or Fobare. Any info that may help me unravel this puzzle would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. She was the first St. Lawrence county chairman of the New York State Federation of Women's clubs, a member of the United Helpers' Society and of the Canton Garden Club. Since 1925 she had been a member of the Gouverneur Morris chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was regent of the chapter during 1930-1931. An active worker in the Presbyterian church, Mrs. Brown was for several years president and treasurer of the Missionary Society. She was also a past president of the Ladies Aid Society, the Canton Woman's Library Association and the Canton Study Club. Both the Austins and the Thorntons traced their ancestry back to early colonial stock. The Thornton family went back to John Thornton who in 1638 [ should be 1648]was one of the founders of the First Baptist church of Newport, R. I. John Thornton's son John 2nd, known as Colonel Thornton, was a lieutenant colonel of the Providence county regiment, 1761-1762, a fifth justice of the inferior court of common pleas and general sessions of the peace in 1776; and a fourth justice of that court in 1768. For eight years he was a deputy to the general assembly of Rhode Island.A son of Col. Thornton was Josiah Thornton, whose grandson, Josiah, 2nd, came to St. Lawrence county in 1805 as one of the first settlers of Depeyster. He was the paternal grandfather of Mrs. Brown. The third daughter in a family of six children, Mrs. Brown went to a rural school at Depeyster corners and later at Heuvelton where in 1876 her father moved to that village and built a home. He entered partnership with Edwin Hulett, his brother-in-law, in operating the Pickens mill and lumber yard. In about a year Mr. Thornton purchased his partner's share of the mill which he ran alone until his son, Edward L. Thornton, was able to work with him. Alonzo Thornton died in 1931, aged 99. Part of his diary was published in the Watertown Times. Mrs. Brown was graduated from the Heuvelton High School and from Ives Seminary in Antwerp. She taught school in Waddington and in Heuvelton until her marriage to Joseph F. Brown at her home at Heuvelton on Aug. 19, 1890. Mr. & Mrs. Brown lived for a while a Centerville, Mich., where Mr. Brown was principal of the public school. They lived later in Yakima and in Spokane, Wash., but most of their married life was spent in Canton.Surviving Mrs. Brown are: her husband; three children, Margaret Elizabeth Brown and Irving Thornton Brown of Canton; and Mrs. Evelyn Brown Younger, Cannondale, Conn.; a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Thornton McCune, Chicago, Ill.; a grandson, Irving Thornton Brown, Jr. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Two possible fathers have been named, Noah Thornton (b1753) and Stephen Thornton (b1759). Since Stephen would have been 16 years old at Josiah's birth, the probable father is Noah.
