Hubbel living in the household, he is also recorded as being born in Canada. I have found a book that talks about St. Lawrence County and has a reference to the "windmill" and "Hiram W. Barlow" it says the following: "The following is a list, as nearly as could be procured, of the prisoners taken at the wind mill, and tried at Kingston....Hiram W. Barlow, 19 (St. L. co), pardoned" It's weird b/c at the top it says the ones that were in italics were the only ones not sentenced to be hung. Hiram was not in italics...but it does say that he was pardoned... The book is: Hough, Franklin Benjamin, [View Citation] [Table of Contents] [Page Numbers] A history of St. Lawrence and Franklin Counties, New York : from the earliest period to the present time Albany N.Y.: Little, 1853, 723 pgs. So from this, in 1840 Hiram W. Barlow did infact live in St. Lawrence County. in another book, about the same thing it lists Hiram W. Barlow, 19, Morristown, pardoned. I have checked the civil war records for Morristown and did not find Hiram on there at all...but Morristown is a start atleast. I found a birth in 1849 to a Stephen and Maria Barlow in Pierrepont, St. Lawrence, NY. In pre-1850 newspapers the following was found...please notice the last name on one of the documents: Patriot War POW to be released another list of POWs to be released soon includes Hiram W. Barlow of SLC 11 Apr. 30, 1839 Patriot War POW's an article written by two former prisoners lists men still being held by the British on the penal colony of Van Dieman's Island in the Pacific 1 Mar. 1, 1844 Patriot War POW's escape 15 prisoners being held at Ft. Henry near Kingston escaped and 13 of them made it to safety in Watertown 11 Aug. 7, 1838 Patriot War POW's listed the prisoners taken at Prescott are listed along with ages and residences. Issue of Jan. 1, 1839 lists trial details including those for Culver S. Clark, 18, of Franklin Co., Andrew Richardson of SLC, Hiram W. Barton 19, of SLC and Jeff Norris of VT but lately of Rossie Village 11 Nov. 27, 1838 and Jan. 1, 1839 also in old newspapers, a possible brother or? Died. Barlow. In Canton, Jan. 4, 1890, Mr. William Barlow, in the 85th year of his age. Mr. Barlow was a native of Pittsford, Vt., but has been a resident of this county for the last 73 years. Author: frncesc2001 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.saintlawrence/16223.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In 1810 I did a soundex search for the last name Barlow in Saint Lawrence County, ancestry came up with the following: Joseph Baril, Stephend Burruel, and Benjm Barley. In 1820 I did the same thing and came up with Coleman Barrel. In 1830 it came up with Jeremiah Barley, Moses Brrly, Samuel BARLOW, FRANCIS BARLOW, and David Brrel. When I did a search in 1830 for anyone named Hiram in the county there was a Hiram Bailey. There was someone with the first name Wheeler, but their last name was Odell. In 1820 there is a Hiram Baker. there were some in 1830 I just didn't include it because I don't think it is a relation. I did find your relative in 1860 in Oswego County, NY Harmon W. Barlow 40 Mary F Barlow 33 Hariet A Barlow 19 Henry E Barlow 16 Aonethe Barlow 11 Harmon W Barlow 9 Hilpha Barlow 3 the post office says Oswego so I think that they probably lived in Oswego. In 1850 he is in Oswego, Oswego Hiram W. Barlow 31 his daughter Henrietta who was 7 was listed as being born in Canada. His daughter Arenath who was 2 was listed as being born in Canada. same with his daughter Harriet who was 9. Mary, his wife who was 31 was also listed as being born in Canada. Saint Lawrence County is right on the border of Canda, and my family constantly went between the two making it so hard to track them. I am guessing that this is the same with your family. There was another family of Barlows in Oswego in 1850, but there is no way to find out if the two were related at this time. It looks as though Hiram was an important name in the family because in the SSDI there was a Hiram Barlow b. 4/30/1916 that died in November 1976. I'm guessing he was related as his last residence was Minetto, Oswego, NY. On a rootsweb family tree someone has Hiram's father as being James Barlow that was born in Yorkshire, England. No mother listed. It looks as though they have him being in the Battle of the Windmill Military Service, 1837 in Prescott, Ontario, Canada. In 1862 they have him living at 78 Water St. and in 1864 being in the Military, 24th regiment cavalry, company G. In 1865 they said he lived in Auburn, NY (which should be Cayuga County). From what their notes say he was in the Canadian Census in 1821 and 1831 and in the US census in 1830- 1870. it says that he died in July 25, 1876 in Oswego, NY and is buried in the Oswego Rural Cemetery. There may be other relatives there, you may want to look into that. Also I would check in the "Genealogy of the Santee Family in America" by Elias M. Santee, MD; 1899; 1927, reprinted by Higginson Book Company. they may have some information on him as Mary's husband. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
