Hi Russ I don't know what has happened but I haven't changed my email address. It is still [email protected] and I don't want to unsubscribe from any list I am on. I think you may have, unintentionally, mixed me up with another Barb as the address in your email isn't mine. Good to hear from you anyway. It sounds like my Thomas would have been a cousin at best to your Thomas, and I have no evidence as to the family origins so I can't say if there is a Purves in that line. I do not know of any of the rest of the family coming earlier than that. We do have Purves in our line and a newspaper article had stated that my grandparents had stayed with an uncle James Purvis the first three years they were in NYS. But, I found my grandparents in a house on their own in the 1850 census so know that isn't true. Never did find the James Purvis the article talked about. Did you have a James Purvis in the area? My Thomas Hamilton was born 20 April 1820 in Dunbar, Scotland, married in 1848 in Berwick-Upon-Tweed, and sailed with his new wife, Catherine, to NYS that year. He may have come because some family was already here (meaning Hamilton's) or just because of the Uncle James Purvis and wanting to start a new life in the new world. Sorry I can't be of more help. But, if you think we are still related, I would be more than willing to continue discussing this with ! you. Carole Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. George was married to Eizabeth Reed. They had another son Isaac Hamilton 1785-1869 who is buried in nearby Russell New York. I know nothing of his family. Thomas might be a Grandchild. There are quite a few Hamilton's in the Ogdensburg Cemetery http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~stlawgen/CEMETERY/Ogdensburgh/Ogdensburghhk.HTM If you haven't been to Anne Cady's St Lawrence Co site, you need to go. It is the very best especially for cemetery listings and pictures. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~stlawgen/index.HTM I am familiar with Ashville as I went to school in Fredonia. I would also try the Rutland Vermont area histories as that is where the Hamilton's lived until just before 1850. My family seemed to have come in the 1840's to Herman. I am sure if you do a search on Ancestry.com for Noah Hamilton 1804-1894 you can trace the Hamilton line as far as I have it. There is not much on line from Rutland that I could find. I did follow the line of Alexander Hamilton and I found no connection Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. An obit from the Jamestown Journal provided the basis for the information I gave you on his place of origin, ie Ogdensburg NY. In some of the NY census returns he is listed as being born in St Lawrence County Vermont. None of the family's surviving documents give us any details of his family or history prior to his arrival in Blockville NY in 1845. Family oral history asserts he was a sailor/carpenter on the Great Lakes and named his 3 sons after ships he worked on - Hendrick H, Henry Harrison and Hosea Orlando Hamilton. He married a local girl (Sallyette Carpenter)in 1846 but her family had come to the area from Dutchess County NY a generation earlier as part of the first settlers c.1814. The Obit claimed he served as sailor, mate and master before settling down. If you or anyone else reading these posts can point to any potential avenues of research re Thomas and his family besides those in your email I would appreciate the help, eg How many Hamilton families moved from Vermont and when? Many thanks for your prompt reply to my earlier post. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There is no St. Lawrence County Vermont, you must mean New York of which Ogdensburg is a part of. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, December 22, 2008 11:28 PM Subject: Re: [NYSTLAWR] HAMILTON of Ogdensburg Info > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: jkellison2008 > Surnames: HAMILTON CARPENTER > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.saintlawrence/3003.1.2.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Thomas Hamilton died in 1879 in Ashville, Chatauqua County NY.
