    1. Re: [NYSTLAWR] 1893 death certificate (McConkey)
    2. Just an FYI....but I've found the death certificates to be a bit spotty between 1882 and 1900 or so.? I know they were supposed to keep them, but in my experience it can be hit or miss whether you find them or not.? Plus, when I've found one from that time-frame, the information seems very minimal (often not even parents names)..just name of deceased, age at death, and cause.? Hopefully you will have better luck.? I know I was very disappointed when I found my great grandfather's certificate.? I was hoping to learn where he was born, but it didn't even tell me.? He died in 1892 in St. Lawrence county. Starting around 1900 they seemed to go to a pretty good form across the state and the info is much more consistent. 2. I suspect the person you are looking for died in the town of Oswegatchie which is where Ogdensburg is located.? The town offices for Oswegatchie are in Heuvelton (about 10 miles east of Ogdensburg).? Here is the info for the Oswegatchie Town Clerk. They have a nice genealogy area upstairs and also have folders of information on tons of families from the area.? The staff is also extremely helpful. I wasn't too happy with Ogdensburg City Hall for that. Seems as if someone could have steered me to that microfilm, or looked there themselves while looking for the paper record. Oh well. It's easy to go to the library here. I really do not see why the $44 either. I understand that we are paying for the time of the employee who looks it up, but it took her all of 15 minutes to come back and tell me they were not there, and I'm sure she does not make $44 every 15 minutes. I know genealogy can be a costly hobby between subscriptions for fee based sites and the joining of societies to do lookups and paying other genealogists to do a little searching. It's cheaper than trips and hotel rooms but quite draining and frustrating when they can't find information either. Sorry for the rant, but I am VERY frustrated over not finding these ancestors despite all my efforts and it is getting to me. I'll take you up on yur suggestion though, and I thank you for it. 3. Hello Jeanne, I'm fairly certain that there are no families with the Patterson name remaining in that area. At least not from this line. There were two sons, one of whom never married or had children to pass the name on to, and the other relocated further west. The Pettersons must be another family entirely. I also so no other Pattersons or Pettersons in the cemetery at Big Flats when I visited over Thanksgiving, so I suspect that this was a family that ended up in the area with no additional contacts; ultimately making it even harder to track them down. _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live™ Hotmail®: Chat. The location (as usual) is: _http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~stlawgen/index.HTM_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~stlawgen/index.HTM) Look under the Census records section. Author: aesund Surnames: Patterson, Proper, Brown Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.saintlawrence/16275/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello All, I may have posted here previously, but am trying again in the hopes that someone may be able to help me locate parents for James Patterson if given additional information. James Patterson is listed in most documents as having a birthdate in 1827, on his military records as having a BD of 1837. He was married to Martha Proper in Malone in 1847, with his residence being listed as Potsdam on the marriage records. In all records thereafter, I find Martha and their daughter Emily living in Malone with her parents. It appears for all practical purposes that she and James were not sharing a residence. James Patterson enlisted in the Union Army in Potsdam in 1861 for a duration of 3 yrs, but was discharged in 1863 d/t illness. On his enlistment papers, his residence was listed as being Potsdam, NY and his occupation was listed as "farmer". At some point after this, James moved to WI near the area of Big Flats. He obtained a divorce from Martha in Waupaca, WI in 1867 (again no evidence that she moved with him) and married Susan Brown that same year. They had 6 children. James died in 1908 and is buried in the Big Flats cemetery. I have no names for James's parents, but on census records, their birth places are alternately listed as NH and NY for his father and VT and NY for his mother. I continue to be at an impasse with this issue, but remain hopeful that eventually, this might ring a bell with someone else out there! I have no other information at all. I'm simply trying to identify who this particular Edwin Wattles is (who has popped up in my research efforts to try and identify ALL Wattles folks)-- there's so many Edwins for my 80 year old pea brain.
