I will be in your area in June and want to spend some time with microfilms of newspapers to get obituaries, marriages and maybe some births. Could somebody please tell me if the Schenectady Gazette is available on microfilm? Also, would there be somewhere in Troy which would have the films? Lastly, what newspaper would be the most likely one for the German population to use in the late 1800's and early 1900's and is it on microfilm? Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated. Ruth (Schmitz) Cherecwich

Also, would there be somewhere in Troy which would have the films? The public library and the historical society have microfilm for most Schenectady newspapers. Troy does not. More detailed information on local holdings may be found at <http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/nysnp/247.htm>; see also <http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/nysnp/147.htm> for holdings at the New York State Library in Albany. > Lastly, what newspaper would be the most likely one for the German population > to use in the late 1800's and early 1900's and is it on microfilm? The Deutsche Journal / Schenectady Herold / Schenectady Herold-Journal is available on microfilm only at the University at Albany. See the first URL I cited for more details.
