I will be in Schenectady, Albany and Troy next week to do some research. One of my plans is to go thru some newspaper microfilms primarily at the Schenectady Library but also at other places to get copies of obituaries etc. Could someone please tell me what the libraries for these three cities as well as the State Archives use for a system of paying for microfilm prints? ie: does one buy a card and then put $$ on it using bills; Or, should I bring rolls of dimes or quarters? Also need to know what the fee and payment method is for photocopier machines. Thanks for any guidance you can give me on this. Ruth (Schmitz) Cherecwich

At the Schenectady County Public Library, our photocopiers have bill changers but our microfilm reader/printers only take dimes. You may get change at the circulation desk, but if you plan to do a lot of copies bringing rolls of dimes would be a good idea. One of our reader/printers is equipped with a scanner, so if you bring a Zip disk you can save the images instead of printing. We're still feeling our way with that, so you may want to contact me to start you off. I believe the New York State Library has recently introduced something similar, but I don't know the details. Hi Ruth, The Onondaga County Library in Syracuse has a number of large books that contain photo copies of newspaper articles. These books have been indexed. Photo copies must be made by a librarian and cost $.25 each. They also have a large microfilm section.
