I suggest for early GE information contacting the Schenectady Museum. They have considerable holdings of historical materials. Also, they have published some books about the founding of GE that I consulted in a client project a couple of years ago. I looked at the books at the Schenectady County Public Library, whose catalog is on line. ===== Nancy Johnsen Curran http://pages.prodigy.net/nancycurran Genealogy research and photography in the capital region of New York State
I was able to find a bunch of information on my ancestors, who worked at GE from the 1890s-1970s, in the General Electric News - Schenectady Works, which was an employee newspaper/magazine. It has articles detailing events around the Factory, but also a large employee "gossip" column which lists such news items as births, vacations, promotions, retirements, deaths, etc. The column is divided by department, so if you know where your relative worked you can narrow the search. Otherwise you'll have to scan through everything, which is very tedious, but can be rewarding. I found mention of all the above events for my family members, plus mention in articles about holiday parties, contests, induction into the Quarter Century club (for those having worked there for 25 yrs), and sports events. I can't remember if it's the Schenectady Public Library or the Museum which has a run of these, but if you have the time, it's worth it. I actually looked at copies owned by the Cornell Public Library, so other places do have them too.
