Dear list members, This message has been sent to NYSCHENE-L NYONONDA-L NYGENESE-L NYMONTGO-L NYONEIDA-L and in all probability, many more. Yes, I have a New York Rice Family, and I have worked very hard on it, and NO, I am not sending my work to her. This doesn't pass the smell test. When a tombstone or cemetery office record tells us the age of a person at their death, we know what that means. But, what if the stone says "died March 4, 1902 in his 60th year"? Do you realize that the person was only 59 years old when he died? I child who is 14 months old is in its second year of life, but it is only 1 year old. Using the same reasoning, a 59 year old is in his or her 60th year of life. Genealogists who are not familiar with this distinction, sometimes misreport death information. I don't have much experience transcribing tombstones. Perhaps someone with more experience knows of other pitfalls that should be mentioned. Sometimes a stone may say AE. 60. I used to think that it was just an abbreviation for the word 'age'. Actually, it is an abbreviation for the Latin word Aetas (or a closely similar word such as Aetatis), which means 'age, lifetime, years'. In effect, therefore, it does mean age, which is 60 in this case. One might think that the use of Latin on gravestones would occur mainly on Catholic stones. Perhaps, but it also occurs on the stones of Protestants. I have not heard these ideas discussed on any mailing list, so I thought that they would be worth mentioning. Cliff
Hi Lillee, Your best bet to to check out the Kinship website at http://www.kinshipny.com They published 4 quarterly publications for a number oy years. They were The Capital, The Columbia, The Mohawk and The Saratoga. The early years are on CD-ROM. For the last 2 or 3 yeard they have been published in a single bound volume. Cliff, It's called "Index to Upstate NY Source Records 1685-1910". I saw it on the Family Tree Maker website (http://www.genealogy.com/index-r.html). I originally thought it was a published index to the Kinship pubications, but now I think it is something Family Tree Maker has made. Haynes" <dhaynes@Oswego.EDU> Looking for information regarding Charles Bradford Lord, b. 1849 in MA. Nancy Jane Young Lord, wife born in 1852 in Greenbush, Maine. Charles died in Schenectady from complications from a farming accident that cut off his leg/s. He dies from gang green. He is buried in Vale Cemetery but not in the family plot. Not sure why not. His wife Nancy dies in 1935 and is buried we believe in the town of Rotterdam. Not sure if there is a cemetery there or not. Charles has a rather new grave stone marker and we believe that his children may have placed it after their mother died. At the time of the 1880 census Charles and Nancy were living in New York, New York. The following children were living with them at the time. Chester B. Lord b. 1870 Louis F. Lord b. 1875 Charles O. Lord b. 1878 Bertha Lord b. 1880 Homer is another child but not living at the time of the 1880 census. He must have been born afterwards. Would appreciate any help on the 1900 and 1910 census lists. Thank you. Deborah Lord Haynes
Is there someone who may be visiting the SCHS soon that could help me with a lookup? On my trip there this past July, I looked in the 1902 Schenectady City Directory and jotted down an address on Catherine St. where Jennie was residing. As the library was about to close, I did not photocopy the page and now I am wondering if I copied down the right address. I know better than to not get photocopies and am now regretting it.
