    1. [NYSCHENE] Dates & Places
    2. Richard Hayes
    3. Hi Robecca, You are lacking dates to go with the names you have. One of the first places I would check is the Ellis Island web site. The names you have in your message are not American. If they came to America during the early part of the 20th Century, you might find their names there. The address is http://www.ellisislandrecords.org Another place to search in at the LDS website at http://www.familysearch.org/ Cyndis List would be the next place to try. The address is http://www.CyndisList.com There are links to many places to check from that website. > I am so lost. 1. [NYSCHENE] lost - please help!
    2. _Robecca Schermett
    3. Hello from a new person! I am so lost. I am doing a genealogy book for my daughter so that she can always have it and know where she comes from, but I am running into all kinds of brick walls on my husbands side of the family. Unfortunately for him, his family - both paternal and maternal, do not talk at all. He knows the basics. His fathers name, his mother's name and his maternal grandparents. And the names are all strange and unusual - in my opinion. Can anyone help to solve my problem. I am looking for information on any Puszcz's in the Schenectady, New York area. My husband's grandmother was Genevieve Rosalie Puszcz. His grandfather was Stanley Blaski - former Blasczienski. He changed his name because he was deaf and Blaski was easily for the deaf community to sign. His family lived in Fulton, New York. Genevieve was also deaf. And I am told that her mother's name was Rosalie. And then there is my husband's father. Douglas Albert Schermett. He died in May of 1990. Married to Marie Anna Blaski in 1972. No known information on his family, except that maybe his grandfather's name was Albert Schermett. If you can help me, you don't know how grateful I would be!! Thanks for taking the time to read this - Robecca

    2. Thanks, Bob! Re: Alexander Van Voast and Catherine Johnson: >>The Schenectady Cabinet for Oct. 29, 1828, p. 3 has a notice which says they were married on Oct. 21. Interesting. I took their marriage date, October 29, 1828, from the records of the First Reformed Dutch Protestant Church, Schenectady. I'll have to recheck the church records. At any rate, either date, is anyone familiar with these folks? Melissa

    3. Jeanette Neisuler's _History of Education in Schenectady, 1661-62 - 1961-62 is now available at: <http://www.schenectadyhistory.org/education/neisuler/> Even if you're not researching Schenectady, this book contains a lot of information on the development of public education in New York. I found it a fascinating discussion, as much for the things which haven't changed (e.g., the controversies over school funding) as those which have, such as teacher pay and status and social attitudes about education in general. 1. [NYSCHENE] Groot / Groat
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. Carol, The Dutch -oo- sounds like -o- in bone. Therefore, Groot (in Dutch) sounds like Groat (in English). They are the same surname. It comes in other spelling variations such as Groedt. Jim Groat wrote a book in 1986 about many of the Groats and it is now online. See my website at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~clifflamere/ Look in "Other Lists of People", then New York State.
