Just got back from vacation and saw this message. I have Silvernail ancestors from Columbia, Rensselaer and Schenectady Counties and surrounding areas. Did someone post a copy of a Silvernail family photo? I'd certainly like to see it. Hello, Shelley, I'd suggest sending the photographs to the Schenectady County Historical Society. They take good care of photographs -- and other donations as well -- and keep well maintained surname files. Walter and Catherine also had Agnes and Anne, according to the Turnbull file at the Historical society. In that file, there is speculation that Walter's parents were William and Jane Douglas Turnbull and he MAY have had brothers John (my line) Walter and George. Certainly they all lived near each other and their lives and fortunes intertwined somewhat. John married Agnes McCoul and Margaret Renwick, the second possibly bigamy or following a divorce. He had a total of 7 children. William either was [or was the son of] a gardener to the Royal family and married Harriet N. Bullman. They had a son Robert who had 4 children. George married Jane Kennedy and had 6 children. I have some further info on them all. I would suggest you write to the Schenectady County Historical Society and ask them to copy the Turnbull file for you. I believe Montgomery County also has quite a lot and the Town of Princetown Historian, Irma Mastrean has a good bit also. Also try the Duanesburg ! Historical Society. I think I have their addresses buried somewhere and I would be happy to send them. ----- Original Message ----- From: J. I believe the site is by the Public Lib. but can be found by looking under "Schenectady Works". A person can also look up the American Locomotive Works or ALCO for history on the locomotive builder in Schenectady. Great Job.... I was able to find a bunch of information on my ancestors, who worked at GE from the 1890s-1970s, in the General Electric News - Schenectady Works, which was an employee newspaper/magazine. It has articles detailing events around the Factory, but also a large employee "gossip" column which lists such news items as births, vacations, promotions, retirements, deaths, etc. The column is divided by department, so if you know where your relative worked you can narrow the search. Otherwise you'll have to scan through everything, which is very tedious, but can be rewarding. I found mention of all the above events for my family members, plus mention in articles about holiday parties, contests, induction into the Quarter Century club (for those having worked there for 25 yrs), and sports events. I can't remember if it's the Schenectady Public Library or the Museum which has a run of these, but if you have the time, it's worth it. I actually looked at copies owned by the Cornell Public Library, so other places do have them too.
