    1. [NYSARATO] Leslie Potter to talk on Saratoga Patent on June 12
    2. Leslie B. Potter
    3. Dear Robert Miles Eddy: I am not a genealogist. I am a disabled attorney, who is retooling as a historian. The scope of my research is the Saratoga Tax District of Albany County, which is considerably bigger than the Saratoga Patent and includes it. The Saratoga Tax District included the present day towns of Stillwater, Saratoga, Northumberland, Moreau and parts of Malta and the City of Mechanicville in Saratoga County, as well as, the southern half of the Village of Ft. Edward, the southern half of the Town of Ft. Edward, part of Greenwich, and the Town of Easton in present day Washington County. I have "undertaken the representation" of the civilian population who lived in the Saratoga Tax District between 1764 and 1777. So I am only documenting a seven year period of time. I am very sorry that the Old Saratoga Historical Association's press release misrepresented my talk to the list. It was an obvious lack of communication for which I apologize. Please forgive us. On the issue of my publishing, even if I had my paper entitled "A Lawyer's Analysis of 'Burgoyne's Wilderness': the Saratoga Tax District of Albany County" in the format required by the editor of the RECORD and put it in the mail today, I suspect that it would take the better part of a year or more before it would be printed. Also please be advised that not only do I not have my paper in the proper format, but the section of my paper dealing with Dutch property law has to be completely rewritten. That is going to take some time. First, because 18th century Dutch law is so very different from 18th century English common law that it takes a while for Roman-Dutch law to sink into my poor brain. Second, because in order to read the most succinct authority on Roman-Dutch law, Commentaries on the Roman-Dutch Law by Simon Van Leeuwen (published in 1820), I have to perch on a hard stool in front of a computer terminal in the library of the Pennsylvania State University. Neither my lungs, my rump, nor my brain can tolerate that activity for long periods of time nor can I tolerate that activity on frequent occasions. So although I am sorry to disappoint the List, I hope that my finished product will be worth the wait. Soon, I hope. Please let the list know when the article will be available and how we can purchase copies. Robert Miles Eddy In a message dated 6/20/07 7:00:03 PM, lbpotter@comcast.net writes: Hi Sonja, I have just returned from the Sataroga Tax District. (Actually, I got in at 12:35 a.m. this morning and have not even started to unpack my trailer yet.) The talk that I gave to the Old Saratoga Historical Association was a combination of the main parts of my paper entitled, "A Lawyer's Analysis of Burgoyne's 'Wilderness': The Saratoga Tax District of Albany County" and "Debunking Burgoyne's Rationale for the British Defeat at Freeman's Farm". I am sorry but I can not post either of the original papers or the combined paper on the internet if I want to get my research published by a reputable publisher. Make no mistake about it, I do want to get my papers published. Last year after the 2006 Conference on New York State History, I submitted my "Burgoyne's 'Wilderness' " paper to the RECORD. The editor of the RECORD was interested in my paper. So I just have to make the formatting changes that the editor requested, before I send it back to the RECORD. Eventually, I hope to produce a book on the civilian population of the Rev War Era Saratoga Tax District, but I still have a lot of title work and genealogical research to do first. However, I am still willing to share and swap information from my database with other researchers. I am not sure how to access the material now, but I have posted the 1779 Saratoga District Tax Lists on the NY Gen Web Archives and some of the individual county Gen Web sites. So if list members can access those lists and then contact me, I'll be please to lend them a hand. Please be patient with the pace at which I am getting my research published. Sincerely, Leslie
