Just posted LOTS of information about poorhouses in SARATOGA County! Take a look at the website I recently published at http://www.poorhousestory.com -- which is a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American Poorhouses. Because I started my research in New York State...there is a vast amount of information about your state. The SARATOGA county page is at http://www.getccs.com/phl/SARATOGA.htm and we have just posted information from a state-wide legislative investigation which was done in 1824. That investigation resulted in the passage of a law which required the establishment of county poorhouses in most NYS counties -- including Saratoga. You may read the actual information about Saratoga county which was published as a part of that report. Notice that at the top of the Saratoga County page there are 3 major links: YATES REPORT (which was done in 1824) 1824 LAW 1857 INVESTIGATION By clicking on those you can read the background information about the investigations, reports and the law. Then we have also posted the information for Saratoga County which was published as part of the 1857 Investigation. I hope you find this interesting. There is much more information about poorhouses in general. (Since I began my research in NY...most of the examples come from NYS.) If any of you listers have further information about any poorhouses...we rely on you to help us fill in the blanks. <grin> Specific information which you wish to share (doesn't have to be OFFICIAL...can be informal or anecdotal)... posting to the MESSAGE BOARD is the quickest way to SHARE what you know...and teach us all more about the poorhouses...where some of your BRICK WALLS may come tumbling down! Happy Hunting! The Poorhouse Lady (aka = Linda Crannell)
