I use to work with a man in a florist in Binghamton who would always say "Just a little sap snow" when the snow fluries would start in Spring. I thought about that comment when I heard on the radio at 1am today that Michigan received 6" of snow and that the Northeast could expect up to 2" in the Higher Elevations on Sunday (today). It rained last night and into the night it rained quite hard at times. At 4:30am I was back on the computer and about 6 am I glanced out the window to see snow. It was really coming down and there was a good 1-2" already. But wait a minute - the announcer said in the Higher Elevations and Saratoga Springs is not in the Higher Elevations. By 9 am we were looking at 6" plus. I kept hearing trees crack and some branches were falling. Then I heard a big crack and heavy thud. Grabbed my coat and went out only to find my car had 8" of snow and the snow was really coming down. The big thud was a neigbor's tree coming down and landed on her car that she was just getting into. She ran and it landed on the driver's door, right where she was just standing. Another neighbor, two doors away, has a bigger tree sitting on his brand new car. Trees kept dropping limbs and bushes were hanging to the ground everywhere and it just kept coming down. Enroute to church at 10am, streets were blocked because of power wires down and trees across them everywhere. Today was one of the most beautiful winter wonderlands but one of the worst for damage I have ever seen anywhere. When I returned home tonight, my landlord had been without power for three hours and had candles set up. The power was out in quite a large part of the West side of Saratoga Springs and came back on at 10pm and we are amongst the lucky ones in Saratoga County. Others are still out and it will take some time to locate all of the wires that are down because there are so many trees hanging down. Just a little sap snow in Saratoga County, NY.
