No, the deeds and wills are not online. You must order these deeds and wills or come to look at them yourself at the Saratoga County Clerk's office and the Surrogate Court, both in Ballston Spa NY. Members of Heritage Hunters gathered the data and prepared it for publication. The index of Saratoga County Deed Books - grantees through 1840 is published in the bimonthly Heritage Hunters newsletter. Already published are grantees from Abbott to Sanford. The Index to the Records of the Surrogate Court 1791-1900 was published a few years ago. Michael Noonan, photographer and photographic archivist, will outline the history of photography from daguerreotypes, to tintypes and portrait photography, and tell us how to date and care for old photos. Michael apprenticed and worked with George S. Bolster in Saratoga Springs for 18 years and then opened his own studio. He is now located in the Chocolate Factory in Ballston Spa. There are no Z entries in either the grantee deed index through 1840 or in the Index to Surrogate Court Files 1791-1900. The Day and Edinburgh area should be included as the deed and court records are for all of Saratoga County. Perhaps Zenstine/Zinstine purchased land after 1840 or perhaps he acquired land but the deed was not recorded by 1840. Sorry. Pat Is there by chance a Jonas or William H. Zinstine (Zenstine) listed in the Deed Books? They lived in the Edinburg, Beecher Hollow, Day area and I am presuming that this is included in the books. Thank you very much for looking. Thanks Pat for checking on that. There is conflicting info on Zinstines arrival in NY from Canada, the early date 1836 and the later is 1846! So I appreciate the lookup, everything helps to narrow down the field. Thank you, Lori ----- Original Message ----- From: "J. Hi Charlie, First, the Saratoga District did not include all of Saratoga County, but it also included part of present day Washington and Warren Counties. However, it included land in the Hudson River corridor from the Anthony Kill to Ft. Edward on both sides of the river. Settlement of the Hudson River corridor began in the 1680s and continued in fits and starts. The proprietors of the Saratoga Patent really kicked settlement into high gear following the French and Indian War, when they started recruiting settlers from Ireland and New England in 1763. In 1779 there were 567 taxpayers in the Saratoga District, plus 125 Loyalists pulled up stakes and had left to Canada. Back then they had more than 2.3 children per household. There were some 15 mills and other tradesmen living in the villages of Stillwater and Saratoga. When I did the math last year before presenting a paper to the 2006 Conference New York State History, I estimated that the population of the area was roughly equal to the population of Boston in 1777, i.e. roughly 8,000 people. It was not a wilderness. Stillwater was populated at a density equal to Brimingham Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania where the Battle of Brandywine was fought. The only difference is that Howe won and Burgoyne lost. The following men with the surname of Calkins appear on the following tax lists for present day Saratoga County. David Calkins - Ballstown District, 1788 Joel Calkins - Ballstown District, 1787; Ballstown District, 1788 Nathaniel Calkins - Ballstown District, 1787 I feel that I would be inclined to nominate one of the three above enumerated men as a candidate to be Lois Clakins' father. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Cady978@aol.com> To: <nysarato@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2007 1:50 PM Subject: [NYSARATO] Calkins, Cady > Josiah CADY, son of Jeremiah Cady, Jr. and grandson of Jeremiah Cady of > Saratoga Springs, was married to a Lois CALKINS, born about 1780. > > Does anyone know this CALKINS family? > > Barbara Cady > _cady978@aol.com_ (mailto:cady978@aol.com) > > > > ************************************** See what's free at > http://www.aol.com. > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > NYSARATO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Sonja, The proprietors of the Saratoga Patent, which included the present day town of Stillwater, were not inclined to sell their interest in the land. They preferred to lease it, instead. So that would explain why you find no record of a purchase. If you can figure out in which Great Lott Wright Brown lived, I might be able to figure out who the proprietor was. Then you could check the proprietor's rent records. My Saratoga District Population list includes only those people who resided in the District before the battle of Freeman's Farm was fought in September of 1777. Since you date Wright Brown's arrival in Stillwater at 1783, he is not eligible to be included on the list of persons, who lived in the Saratoga District in 1777. Sorry. John Burgoyne claimed that he one of the reasons that he had lost the Battles of Saratoga because he had to fight in a forest wilderness. I am compiling the data to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Burgoyne's "forest wilderness" was a figment of his imagination. The Saratoga District was populated at a density, which was typical of rural America in the late 18th Century, i.e. one farmstead per every 150 to 200 acres. Hi Leslie, Wright Brown, b. 1 Jul 1748 in Ware River Parish, Hampshire co., MA and raised in Swanzey, Cheshire Co., NH moved from Swanzey in the spring of 1783 to Saratoga. He is listed in the 1790 census for Saratoga and living between Enis and Stephen Olney. In 1800, Wright Brown is living between Joseph Wright and Oliver Perkins in Saratoga. Funny, one time I thought I saw where he was in Providence, Saratoga Co. in 1800. Don't know where I saw that. Also, in his son's obituary it states they lived in Stillwater. Perhaps they moved there between 1800 and 1808 when they moved to Benton, Ontario co., NY. It states he was born on the battlefield where his father fought during the Rev. War with Col. Hammond from Swanzey. I haven't found a land record for Wright Brown there which seems strange they would sell their property in NH and not buy in NY for twenty years living in the area. When they moved to Benton, they purchased property right away. I did see his name on an early Stillwater map, living next door to Joseph Brown, whom I think was his eldest son. At one time you were looking for a Joseph Brown. Any clues? Sonja ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
May I ask for a lookup, please? I have information suggesting Lewis deMonstoy was born in Saratoga area (Milton?) and died about 1828, we think also in Saratoga. He married Hanna(h?) Brill 1816. One child was Walton Heath born July 1817 in Milton. Wikipedia (sp?) popped up with info that the family had been sent out of Canada because of stealing some horses. I would be so happy to find something.........Thank You in advance for whatever attention you can give. Sincerely, Joanna

Thanks, Pat. My William H. lived in the town of Milton. We run into alot of same names, don't we. I know that my William was married to Eliza (Unknown) and had 2 sons, William Wallace Miller, bn 1850 and Montiford (sp) Harry Miller bn Jul 1852. William Wallce Miller is my g-grandfather and his brother went by Harry. I found William H on the 1860 census at age 35 with wife and son in Milton, then in 1870, they were in Greenfield, Saratoga Co., NY. In 1855 New York State census, the 4 of them are listed as all having been born in Saratoga with Willian H listed as William N (the H could have been read wrong). Harry is buried in Middle Grove Cemetery with his wife Sarah Tabor/Taber and some of their children. William Wallace went to Michigan, married, had several children, his wife died and he moved back to New York State and died in Voorhesville, NY and is buried in Mt Pleasant Cemetery next to his youngest daughter, Harriet (Ethel Eliza Miller) and her husband William Hurst III. William Hurst's family owned a place called Hurstville Hotel in the hamlet of Hurstville, Albany Co., NY. I sent a copy of the article - in the Knickerbocker News, Albany, NY on Jan 11, 1952, to a group in Albany who does genealogy for the area. Anyway, that is the info about my William H. Miller and his boys. Maybe I have to try to find out who my William H. Miller's parents were. I have Shephers (surname) in my family also. John Shepherd was bn on Olmstead Ridge, on the Lancaster Rd, 10 miles from Philadelphia. That is really a description of birth. Not sure exactly where that is...... Thanks for listening........Have a great week.
