    1. [NYSARATO] Heritage Day
    2. Date of Event: May 20th 2007 PUBLISH: In a Timely Fashion SUBJECT: Heritage Day Celebration Contact: Mary-Jane Rau Pelzer The Saratoga Springs Visitor Center 587-3241 Heritage Day – Something for Everyone! Saratoga Springs: On May 20, 2007, from noon until 4:00pm, the rich history of 19th century Saratoga Springs will be celebrated at The Visitor Center, in Congress Park and at the Saratoga Springs History Museum with a variety of performances, demonstrations, and activities; the event is free and open to the public. Mayor Valerie Keehn will open the event by unveiling a bronze plaque at 262 Broadway, the site of the magnificent Convention Hall, which was a presence on Broadway from 1893 until it was destroyed by fire in 1965. Sonny Bonacio and Tom Roohan are co-sponsoring the Convention Hall Plaque, the second in a series of Heritage Plaques to be placed on Broadway. There will be a short reception at The Visitor Center following the plaque ceremony. In honor of Heritage Day and the plaque, a limited edition stamp featuring Convention Hall, complete with a special cancellation envelope and an insert with additional facts about the building, will be on sale at The Visitor Center; the stamp is the second in a series of Heritage Day Collectible Sets. Heritage Day events will include performances by noted balladeer Linda Russell, Native American tracking lore and stories by Jim Bruchac of the Ndakinna Education Center, and “Punch and Judy,” traditional puppet show entertainment by the Punch Bowl Sisters, Dr. Sharon Peck and Debbie Peck Kelleher. There will be a screening of “Historic Views of the Spa City” and several artisans and educators will demonstrate crafts and medicines common during the 1800’ s, and the role of Saratoga’s 77th Regiment in the Civil War. The Saratoga Springs History Museum will feature an exhibit of old mineral water bottles on loan from the National Bottle Museum. In addition to special exhibits, performances and demonstrations, opportunities for individual participation will also be offered: kids of all ages will be encouraged to play some games that were popular during the 19th century or to practice some of the dance steps popular during the era under the guidance of Paul Rosenburg of Homespun Occasions. People can also make their own silhouette portrait, an art form popular in the 1800’s; take a guided walking tour of some of the Putnam family homesites: visit the “open house” at the Putnam Burying Ground; chat with members of the Victorian Ladies about their elaborate period dress, or chat with Gideon and Doanda Putnam, Saratoga’s Founding Father and his wife, who will be eager to share their reactions to the changes in the area since they last lived here. For those interested in learning more about Saratoga’s history, the Saratoga Springs Public Library will feature a display of suggested titles. All Heritage Day activities will take place at The Visitor Center and in Congress Park; the event will run rain or shine. Heritage Day is the result of cooperation between many local organizations; a full list of Heritage Day Committee members is listed at the Visitor Center. For more information on Heritage Day, call Heritage Day Coordinator Mary-Jane Rau Pelzer at The Visitor Center, 587-3241. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    1. Re: [NYSARATO] John Carr, 1790 Ballstown
    2. JOYCE CARR
    3. I am researching John Carr b. abt 1755-60. He had a daughter baptised in Schodack, Rennselaer in 1788. I thought this could be him in the 1790 census (one male, 2 females). He immigrated to Canada in 1796 while land was being offered to settlers. By then he had 4 children. His patent was issued to John Kerr. His sons were named Cornelius, Abraham and James. There are a number of his descendants here in Canada named Abraham, Joseph, James and John. The only Abraham and Joseph Carrs in New York at that time that I have found were Van Der Kars. It is not clear to me that they are the same line as the Carrs. I believe the John Carr I am researching is Scottish and may have descended from a Kerr, Keer, Caer or Car who arrived with early Dutch settlers in the 1600s. He married Maria Van Wickley of Nassau county. He had strong ties with the Dutch and German communities. Ebenezer seems to be a descendant of Caleb Carr and Margarett Adams. James Carr appears to be of yet another Carr line. Joyce Carr "Leslie B. Potter" <lbpotter@comcast.net> wrote: Joseph Carr served in the 13th Regiment of the Albany County Militia during the Rev War and was listed as a taxpayer in the Saratoga Tax District of Albany County, NY in 1779. However when one looks at the 1790 Census Return for Albany County neither of my taxpayers are listed on the U.S. Census Return for the districts in which they were listed as taxpayers. 1. Re: [NYSARATO] The Great Fly
    2. perhaps it was Northampton... NORTHAMPTON, a Post-Township of Montgomery County, 17 miles Northeast of Johnstown, 42 North Northwest of Albany, and 22 Northwest of Ballston Spa; bounded North by Hope, of the proposed county of Hamilton, East by Saratoga County, South by Broadalbin, and West by Mayfield. It is about 8 miles in length north and south, and 4 wide. The Sacandaga River runs diagonally from the Northwest to the Southeast corner, where it makes a short turn to the Northeast, and holds it to the Hudson. There are 3 small mill streams. The surface is level, and the land is called good, and well watered. A road has been laid out from here to the County of St. Lawrence, and is so far completed that some few have gone through on horseback, in summer, but it's route is through a wild waste, that it is doubtful if ever would be inhabited, or the road completed, without special encouragement from the State. About 10,000 acres of the great Fly, (or Vlaie, Dutch) a marsh of 5,000 acres, are in this town,! which in spring affords extensive ranges for cattle and hogs. There are 4 houses for public worship; one belonging to the Methodists, one to the Friends, one to the Baptist, and one to the Presbyterians; and 11 school houses. Population, 1291; electors, 267; taxable property, $106355; acres of improved land, 7,480; 1404 cattle, 304 horses, 2787 sheep: yards of cloth made in families, 15085: 3 grist mills, 7 saw mills, 1 fulling mill, 2 asheries. At the place called the Fish-House, formerly a summer retreat of Sir William Johnson, and from whom it received it's name, there is now a hamlet of 20 families. It is pleasantly situated on the South bank of the Sacandaga River, just at the bend, where the Northampton Post-Office, and an elegant Bridge, of 3 arches, of 120 feet each, and 2 side-walks. -------------- Original message -------------- From: "Karen A Hill" <karenalmdalehill@comcast.net> > It is my understanding there was a camp called The Great Fly near or in or > at Stillwater during the Rev War. 2. Sorry, I'm pretty familiar with Fish House and that part of the Sacandaga area, and it's really not close to Stillwater. Sometimes Vlaie is spelled Vly up my way, so perhaps one of the various "Vlys" will fit the bill. Yep, there are a bunch of 'em. Plus related cities/towns Watervliet, etc., and many roads... Dorothy

    1. Re: [NYSARATO] Men named "Isaac Freeman" living in Saratoga County, NY in the 19th century
    2. Leslie B. Potter
    3. I think that you need more information. I do not feel that I can give you a definitive answer to your question based on the limited genealogical information that I have at hand or the information in the Freeman to Knight deed, which you sent. James Freeman (1716-1801) and his wife Phebe Kinne Freeman (1720-1797) settled in Great Lott 39 of the Saratoga Patent (present day Easton, Washington County) in the 1760s. The children of James Freeman and Phebe Kinne were: Ezra Freeman (1740-1793) d. at Easton, Washington Co. James Freeman, Jr. (1742-1820) m. Lydia Ford - lived in Easton, but moved to Galway, Saratoga Co. NY Amos Freeman (1745-1762) - he was thrown from a horse. Phebe Freeman (1747-1786) m. Calvin Skinner Gideon Freeman (1749-1809) m. Eunice Ford - died at Scipio, Cayuga Co. NY, but had a son named Reuben Freeman (1779-1817) Silas Freeman (1752-1809) - lived in Watervliet Elijah Freeman (1754-1837) m. Pernell Hammond - d. at Easton Washington County Elisha Freeman (1756-1834) m. Miriam Burr - died at Leon, Cattaraugus Co. NY Stephen Freeman (1759-1837) m. Anna Baker - lived in Easton, but removed to East Hamburg, Erie Co. NY in 1822. Lois Freeman (1761-1840) m. William Whiteside Of James Freeman's sons, four stayed in the Saratoga/Washington County area and I have the following information on their children: Ezra Freeman had four children, but none were named Isaac. James Freeman, Jr. had 11 children, but none were named Isaac. Gideon Freeman had 8 children. One was named Roby, but none were named Isaac Silas Freeman had 5 children on the 1790 cenus, but the names are not known Elijah Freeman had 13 children. One was named Rheuby, but none were named Isaac. Stephen Freeman had 10 children and his eldest son was named Isaac (1782-1842) and another son was named Reuben(1826-1906). In 1833 Isaac Freeman (1782-1844), who had been living in the town of Saratoga, purchased Farm # 4, Great Lott 16 of the Second Grand Division of the Saratoga Patent (present day Town of Stillwater) from his first cousins, Isreal Baker and his siblings. (See Saratoga County Deed Book X at page 457). Isaac Freeman (1782-1842) Married 1. Elizabeth Duel and 2. Sarah Sowle (1789-1852). Isaac Freeman had 11 children, one of whom died as an infant. The children of Isaac Freeman, were: Elizabeth (1810-1817), Isaac, Jr. (1813-1866), William (1815-1837); unnamed infant (1817); Anna Soule (1818-1892); Phebe (1820-1839); Amos (1821-1822); Martha (1823-1899); Reuben (1826-1906); Sarah Ann(1828-1904). Isaac Freeman, Jr. (1813-1866) married Harriet Knights Anna Soule Freeman (1818-1892) married William Knights Martha Freeman (1823-1899) married Robert Searle Reuben Freeman (1826-1906) married Hannah Swartout Sarah Ann Freeman (1828-1904) married William Hoxie After Isaac Freeman's death in 1842, his heirs sold their interest in Farm # 4 Great Lott 16 to Isaac Freeman, Jr. (Please see Saratoga County Deed book 53 at page 70) I did not investigate the decedant's estate of either Isaac Freeman (1782-1842) or Isacc Freeman, Jr. (1813-1866). At that point the purpose of my research was to determine who occupied Farm # 3, Great Lott 16 of the Second Grand Division of the Saratoga Patent after John Freeman, the Loyalist, and his family had fled to Canada. Although both Isaac Freeman (1782-1742) and Isaac Freeman, Jr. (1813-1866) both owned other real estate in the Town of Saratoga, I did not investigate those holdings, except to eliminate them as being the farm upon which the Battles of Freeman's Farm were fought on September 19th and October 7th, 1777, respectively. I am sorry but I have not done sufficient title work in the Town of Saratoga to be able to answer your question about the deed that you found. Your deed would appear to be a deed from Reuben Freeman (1826-1906) and Hannah Swartout Freeman, his wife to Samuel Knight. However, there is nothing within the four square corners of the deed which establishes a kinship relationship between you and Reuben Freeman (1826-1906) and Reuben's father, Isaac Freeman (1782-1842). You need more information. I would suggest that you look at Reuben Freeman's (1826-1906) estate papers. Since I have no information about the grandchildren of Stephen Freeman's siblings, I can not eliminate them as candidates for the name of "Isaac Freeman". Additionally, the dates and the name of the widow of Issac Freeman, which you have provided, do not match the names that I have for either Isaac Freeman (1782-1842) or Isaac Freeman, Jr. (1813-1866). You should also note that I do not know anything about any children of either William Freeman or Reuben Freeman, who conceivably could have named a son "Isaac Freeman". Also there were other families with the surname of Freeman living in the area in the mid 19th century. I am sorry that I could not have been of more assistance. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Bobeddyper@aol.com> To: <nysarato@rootsweb.com>; <Bobeddyper@aol.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2007 6:54 PM Subject: Re: [NYSARATO] What was (were) the name(s) of Jane McCrea's Loyalistbrothers? > Leslie, > > In some old papers my mother had I have found an Indenture that may settle > which Isaac Freeman I'm really descended from. 1. Re: [NYSARATO] What was (were) the name(s) of Jane McCrea's Loyalist brothers?
    2. Leslie, In some old papers my mother had I have found an Indenture that may settle which Isaac Freeman I'm really descended from. Or maybe not. (see below for transcript) As I read it, Reuben Freeman sold the described piece of land to Samuel Knight 15 August 1854. The name Reuben Freeman has not showed up on my previous researches but in the deed Freeman to Freeman; Stillwater, Saratoga County which you transcribed and put on the Heritage Hunters site apparently Isaac Freeman had sold land to Reuben Freeman June of 1847. Is the piece of land in my mother's papers part of the same piece of land? Here's the relevant part of the original from my mother's papers: (Written portions in Italics - hope it comes through.) Found in papers of Euilla Freeman, widow of Isaac Freeman. Recorded in Saratoga Clerk's office 21 August 1854 in Book 46 page 106. This indenture: Made the fifteenth day of August one thousand eight hundred and [[forty is printed but r is overwritten with an f and the o with a dotted i]] four Between Reuben Freeman and Hannah his wife of the Town and County of Saratoga State of New York of the first part, and Samuel Knight of the Town of Stillwater, County and State aforesaid Of the second part, WITNESSETH: That the said parties of the first part, for and in consideration of Twenty four hundred Dollars Money on account of the United States of America, to them in hand paid by the said parties of the second part, the receipt whereof is hereby confessed and acknowledged, have Granted, Bargained, Sold, Released, Enfeoffed and Confirmed and by the presents to GRANT, BARGAIN, SELL RELEASE, ENFEOFF and CONFIRM unto the said parties of the second part, his heirs and assigns, FOREVER, ALL Those certain pieces or parcels of land lying and being in the Town of Saratoga aforesaid described as follows: Being the farm of Sixty-seven Acres and one half Acre Sold to said Reuben Freeman by the heirs of Samuel Griffin Deceased Bounded on the North by the public highway, on the East by the lands of Isaac Griffin and Thomas Brightman and the South b y lands of Daniel Griffin and Elias Wilber on the West by lands of Embric Maxwell. The other piece is known as Said Reuben's plain Lot bounded on the North by lands of Cornelius Chase occupied Philip Lasher on the East by the lands of Benjamin Sarles Junior on the South by the lands of Daniel Spreith on the West by the public highway containing about twenty five acres the same more or less. ================ The second page of the document is a mortgage agreement wherein Reuben Freeman agrees to pay $100 plus interest on the first of April each year. The seals beside Reuben and Hanna Freeman's signatures are covered by triangular pieces of gray paper. WHAT THINK YOU? ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. There are several families of Spencer in Ct. There are also two brothers who were in Hartford,Ct. I have a Spencer way way back in one line. I know I got a lot of information from the Ct. State Library in Hartford. A great great research facility.

    2. Sorry it is has taken me so long to get back to you. The Lucy Spencer I have and married to Joseph Brown was b. 12 June 1776 in Westbrook, Middlesex Co., CT. Her parents were Samuel Spencer, Jr. and Deborah Spencer. Father Samuel was the son of Samuel and Mary Carter, while Deborah Spencer was the daughter of Thomas Spencer III and Deborah (?) of Saybrook, Middlesex Co., Ct. Do you see any connection there? 3. Tee, I was looking at the census for 1930 and there was a Doris J DeHeer age 5, living in Greenfield Saratoga area. Father was David, mother was Ruth (maiden name Burton) and they had a son David born in 1929/30. Father and mother died in Shuylerville and are buried there, David Jr. still lives there and can find him by web search on 121 Minnie Bennett Rd and working as a firefighter (possibly volunteer) for Quaker Springs Fire Department on Bennett Rd. I found no other record of Doris Deheer other than the 1930 census, but perhaps this is the one. If so, the brother David would have been 15 at the time of the accident so would know the circumstances. Good luck in your search, and let me know if this pans out.
