    3. I have Whalen that actually lived in CT but in the directories for year 1905, it says, removed to Saratoga Springs. He was back in CT in 1910 census. I am trying to find where he stayed and if there were relatives there. His uncle went to Troy in the 1880s for a couple of years so I am thinking there are relatives in the area. Thanks for the info. I will keep it, never know where connections are. > I had Whalen family in that area . but couldn't find anything on them . > Kate Whalen married a Hugh Kelly in > Saratoga County in about 1908 . 2. Deanna Lewis
    3. Hi All; There's also a Hospital in Middletown, New York. I had a relative die there in 1891 When I contacted the Hospital, they told me the records were too old to mess around with. All I got was his death certificate from Albany. Which doesn't say much. But, I deduce he had a stroke and couldn't take care of himself. A long time ago when a woman went through the change, and was having a ruff time of it the husbands would send them off to a state hospital. I guess you'd say out of sight out of mind? Thank God that isn't done anymore! Deanna from wet but not drowning yet Houston, Texas.

I don't know the years of operation at that location, or the status of any records. Many local people were sent to the "insane asylum" at Utica - the Utica State Hospital, which seems to have been in operation for quite a long time, but I don't know the status of records for that place either. The best bet for the 1907 death is the death certificate, from the New York State Department of Health in Albany - you know the year, and if you order from Albany, you don't need the exact location. 1. [NYSARATO] Leslie Potter to talk on Saratoga Patent on June 12
    2. Leslie B. Potter
    3. Dear Robert Miles Eddy: I am not a genealogist. I am a disabled attorney, who is retooling as a historian. The scope of my research is the Saratoga Tax District of Albany County, which is considerably bigger than the Saratoga Patent and includes it. The Saratoga Tax District included the present day towns of Stillwater, Saratoga, Northumberland, Moreau and parts of Malta and the City of Mechanicville in Saratoga County, as well as, the southern half of the Village of Ft. Edward, the southern half of the Town of Ft. Edward, part of Greenwich, and the Town of Easton in present day Washington County. I have "undertaken the representation" of the civilian population who lived in the Saratoga Tax District between 1764 and 1777. So I am only documenting a seven year period of time. I am very sorry that the Old Saratoga Historical Association's press release misrepresented my talk to the list. It was an obvious lack of communication for which I apologize. Please forgive us. On the issue of my publishing, even if I had my paper entitled "A Lawyer's Analysis of 'Burgoyne's Wilderness': the Saratoga Tax District of Albany County" in the format required by the editor of the RECORD and put it in the mail today, I suspect that it would take the better part of a year or more before it would be printed. Also please be advised that not only do I not have my paper in the proper format, but the section of my paper dealing with Dutch property law has to be completely rewritten. That is going to take some time. First, because 18th century Dutch law is so very different from 18th century English common law that it takes a while for Roman-Dutch law to sink into my poor brain. Second, because in order to read the most succinct authority on Roman-Dutch law, Commentaries on the Roman-Dutch Law by Simon Van Leeuwen (published in 1820), I have to perch on a hard stool in front of a computer terminal in the library of the Pennsylvania State University. Neither my lungs, my rump, nor my brain can tolerate that activity for long periods of time nor can I tolerate that activity on frequent occasions. So although I am sorry to disappoint the List, I hope that my finished product will be worth the wait. Sincerely, Leslie Potter ----- Original Message ----- From: Bobeddyper@aol.com To: lbpotter@comcast.net Cc: nysarato@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2007 8:14 PM Subject: Re: [NYSARATO] Leslie Potter to talk on Saratoga Patent June 12 Delighted to hear you will be publishing. Robert Miles Eddy In a message dated 6/20/07 7:00:03 PM, lbpotter@comcast.net writes: Hi Sonja, I have just returned from the Sataroga Tax District. I am sorry but I can not post either of the original papers or the combined paper on the internet if I want to get my research published by a reputable publisher. Make no mistake about it, I do want to get my papers published. Last year after the 2006 Conference on New York State History, I submitted my "Burgoyne's 'Wilderness' " paper to the RECORD. The editor of the RECORD was interested in my paper. So I just have to make the formatting changes that the editor requested, before I send it back to the RECORD. Eventually, I hope to produce a book on the civilian population of the Rev War Era Saratoga Tax District, but I still have a lot of title work and genealogical research to do first. However, I am still willing to share and swap information from my database with other researchers. I am not sure how to access the material now, but I have posted the 1779 Saratoga District Tax Lists on the NY Gen Web Archives and some of the individual county Gen Web sites. So if list members can access those lists and then contact me, I'll be please to lend them a hand. Please be patient with the pace at which I am getting my research published. Sincerely, Leslie

    3. Sonja, I started the original portion of this "never-ending" Saratoga research project, as my Pennsylvania colleagues call it, in 1989. After I was disabled in 1993, it became my occupational therapy and helped me keep my sanity. One of these centuries, I’ll be finished enough to publish. Congratulations on getting passed your brick walls. That is truly good news. 3. I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the ANNIS Family of New York. The first is a photograph identified as Nathaniel Flood ANNIS which was taken at the Doubleday Studio in Saratoga Springs, NY. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's or 1890's with Nathaniel likely in his 50's or 60's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name someone has written what appears to be "his Grandfather" on the back of the photograph. The second photograph is identified as Olivia Eugenia GRISWOLD ANNIS. This photograph was also taken at the Doubleday Studio in Saratoga Springs. The photograph was likely taken in the 1880's or 1890's with Olivia appearing to be in her 20's or 30's at the time. Based on limited research I was able to locate the family in census records as follows: Nat ANNIS, age 43, a Brick Mason, born VT Minnie ANNIS, age 23, Keeping House, born VT Malcom ANNIS, age 13, born VT Lillian ANNIS, age 3, born NY Lulu ANNIS, age 1, born NY Eliza CLOUGH, age 66, born NY 1880 census of Saratoga Springs, NY: Nathaniel F. ANNIS, age 53, born NH, a Night Watchman at Depot, parents born VT Minnie C. ANNIS, wife, age 33, born VT, House Keeping, parents born NH/VT Malcom G. ANNIS, son, age 23, born VT, a Watchman, parents born NH/VT (obviously not Minnie's son) Lillian E. ANNIS, dau, age 12, born NY, at School Jennie L. ANNIS, dau, age 11, born NY, at School Nathaniel P. ANNIS, son, age 8, born NY, at School Bertha B. ANNIS, dau, age 6, born NY, at School Clara C. ANNIS, dau, age 9 months, born NY 1900 census of Saratoga Springs, NY: Malcolm G. ANNIS, age 43, born Nov 1856, married 17 years, born VT, parents born VT, a Dry Goods Merchant Olivia ANNIS, wife, age 39, born Aug 1860, married 17 years, 2 children/2 living, born NY, parents born NY Margery ANNIS, dau, age 10, born Sept 1889, born NY, at School Frank M. ANNIS, son, age 3, born Nov 1898, born NY Ella A. QUINN, servant, age 26, born July 1873, born NY, parents born PA/NY, a Cook 1910 census of Saratoga Springs, NY: Olive G. ANNIS, age 48, a widow, 2 children/2 living, born NY, parents born NY Irma M. ANNIS, dau, age 20, born NY, parents born NY Frank M. ANNIS, son, age 13, born NY, parents born NY + Boarder I'm hoping to locate someone from this ANNIS Family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to their rightful place with family.
