    3. Speaking of which, Ruth, do you know whether Compiled Civil War Service records for New York veterans are on microfilm? I've been to the NY state library twice and was in awe, both times. Was only able to spend a few days total, and it wasn't near enough. 1. Inter Library Loan
    2. Hello list, I spend 3-5 days a week at NYS Library and Archives. If there is one place on Earth, you want to spend some of your time, it is here. Every day I discover something new and I feel like a kid in a candy store and just haven't tasted of another new treat. This is one of the largest state libraries and archives in the US but our Archives is one of the youngest. As a taxpayer, I can complain about how my hard earned money has been spent but never when you find out what they have done. To say that NYS Library, Archives and Museum are greedy for anything they can obtain, is almost an understatement. BUT it is not just material and artifacts of NYS but from other places. We have quite a bit of material on other states so if you are researching ancestors from some other states, check out the catalog and see what is there. I know we have quite a bit of Civil War info for most other states. Everything is not located on the 7th floor genealogy library nor the 11th floor Archives. I am fascinated when I learn from the staff who are very knowledgeable and many have several fields of expertise and can direct you down many paths of information. As I get to know some of these people, I find that they are expert in botany, antiques, world history, etc. and participate greatly in activities within their communities. They don't fit the discription of "stuffy" if you know what I mean. Go to the NYS Library website <www.nysl.nysed.gov> and scroll down a little until you see Excelsior Catalog - Webcat Search Engine. Click on that. Use the Browse features and try combinations of things as well as single words. For instance, I found only 8 books for Hessians but when I put in American Revolution or Revolutionary War, there were a few hundred and within that list, descriptions brought up books that include Hessian information but that did not appear in the 8 books. Try many combinations to find your topics. By the way, for about $20-$25. you could probably get a microfilm copy of any family history or book that they have (about 500 pages). Some of the out-of-print or fragile books that were not to be copied can be done as they now have overhead scanners in the library that will not harm the books or bindings. This has opened up the use of the books. The NYS Newspaper Project has old NYS newspapers back to 1725. You would not believe how much I have found in the old papers. Newspapers in surrounding counties also have regular columns for areas of Saratoga County so you need to explore those just as thoroughly as you do Saratoga newspapers. These are also available for ILL too. The microfilm collection is enormous so you will have a lot to borrow if you check the catalog and follow directions on that site. Plan several days in this library if you are coming to NY as you cannot possibly get rolling for half a day, just familarizing yourself with the place. Our Heritage Hunters newsletters have regular articles on NYS Library and Archives. Get as much done before you get there. Have your list handy and DON'T start with census records. Your ancestors might be in a genealogy that is already done. 3. This microfilm was obtained through a service called "Inter Library Loan" If you have access to any library, be it university (I am a professor at Univ of Arizona in Tucson), a city, or town library, then you can go to ILL Librarian with the name of the book, microfiche, or microfilm, which you have previously obtained (in this case from the NYSArchives website index) and request an ILL. I submitted this in November, and took unusually long. I can use this film only in the UA library microfilm reading room. US and Canadian libraries are all in this ILL network--have obtained books from Toronto, etc. as well. The reserve times are usually only three weeks, so work fast when things arrive! hope this helps... j At 04:35 AM 01/11/2000 EST, you wrote: >In a message dated 1/11/00 12:24:22 AM Central Standard Time, >[email protected] writes: > ><< have a microfilm from NY State Library in Albany, only have it until Jan > 18th. 2. John O'Hanlon
    3. I have a microfilm from NY State Library in Albany, only have it until Jan 18th. (been on travel most of the time it was here!) This film contains the 1859 and 1860 Tax Assessment lists for the Town of Moreau (they appear to be identical in valuation and names of farmers). They list each property owner, the value of their land, its acreage and tax. It was called a military tax. If you wish lookups, I can do them until the 18th, then Univ of Arizona library has to return it to Albany. For example (my farm was owned by John Thompson from 1856 to 1884: "John Thompson, 100 acres, $1,600, tax $9.21 George Lewis, 83 acres, $1,150, tax $6.62" I kmow John Thompson had a brick house, and George Lewis a wood house! Also at the end of the individual listings, it discusses leaseholds, one leassor was Francis Vischer... "A list of the leasehold property in the Town of Moreau: To Francis Vischer Tax - ------------------------------ Austin Reynolds $200 1.15 Nicholas Jacobie $200 1.15 Peter Wig 100 .57 Charles Scoville 50 .29 Robert Thompson 100 .57 John Thompson 100 .57" QUESTION: Francis Vischer was apparently the leassor who inherrited this from a forebearer, Nanning Vischer, who in turn inherrited or purchased it from Nanning Hermance, the original Kayadrosseras Patentee of 1708, who drew that lot in 1771. DOES ANYONE KNOW how the Kayadrosseras leases ended? did one purchase the land? did the State terminate them? did they just fade away? What happened? My family was told that one neighbor, Belus Ingalsbee simply told the Vischers, one time when they came to collect, to go back to Vischer's ferry, that he was not paying any more! Was this related to the "rent wars" of an earlier day?? (The Dutch brought over farmers and charged them rent as bushels of crop. They did not maintain the land, so the yield decresed and they finally could not pay the rent, so they rebelled.) j John F. 1. Lightbown and Browne, c.1850 Mechanicville/Stillwater/Halfmoon
    2. Bryan Bernard
    3. Hello everyone, I'm looking for any contacts, information or advice about my Saratoga Co. Lightbowns and Brownes. Richard LIGHTBOWN [Lightbourn, etc](1816-1891) immigrated to NY from Lancashire England in the 1840s, fought in the Mexican War, and then settled in Saratoga. He purchased "Bradshaw's Large Island" from William Bradshaw in 1848; a 15 acre island in the Hudson "located east of a farm occupied by Bradley Vernon", apparently near Mechanicville. Richard is listed in the 1850 census in the Halfmoon township as a single farmer. In 1851 he married Eliza Jane BROWN(e) (1827-1862) at Mechanicville, and they had a son Charles Lightbown (just before the wedding). Another son, William Lever Lightbown was born in Mechanicville in 1854. In 1855 Richard and Eliza Jane "of Stillwater" sold the island to Knowlton Howland of Halfmoon. They don't seem to be in the 1855 state census in Halfmoon or Stillwater, and Eliza is living in Troy in 1860 without the others; she died in 1862. Richard and the boys ended up in Washington DC in 1862, after his brief stint in the Union artillery. Any bells rung or ideas? Thanks, -Bryan- (first posting here).
