Hi All, Wish I could get to NY, your libraries sound wonderful, but as I'm way out in CO, I'd like to purchase a book on Saratoga County history. I'm most interested in the period around the Revolutionary War and for a couple of decades on either side. I'd like one that mentions my ancestors (WEEKS/WICKS/WIX), but not realistically expecting that. I'm wondering if any of you have seen any of these books and which, if any, you'd recommend (or not). All are available at bn.com. They're a little pricey, so I'll probably only buy one right now. Hello All, My ancestor, David HAYES, left Saratoga County during the early 1840's. He went all of the way to Broadalbin in Fulton County. I know all about the family while they lived in Fulton County, but I have never really found anything about this family while they lived in Clifton Park. They were members of the Baptist Church there. David's father was William HAYES. Both David and William are listed in the 1820 US Census. He married Rachel in about 1821. This family left Ireland in about 1817. Why did they settle in Clifton Park? Were there persons from his part of Ireland living there? David grew flax made linen cloth. Does anyone have anything on the availability of flax seed or other flax growers from this area? Elias T. HAYES is the step brother of David HAYES. He was born 10 Jun 1828 and probably has descendants living in Saratoga County. Does anyone have any information about this family? Justin (and others) I am not sure what all Bob Crawford has on his Family Tree Maker site but this is where his genealogy of the Crawfords and some of the allied families are to be found. I have a copy of his genealogy in my computer and his gang is all over MI. When I checked the surnames you posted against the index to his 27,000 plus entries he has people by several of your surnames in MI. Try this site: www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/r/a/Robert-C-Crawford/index.html and check out the various families. He gets a phone call or email about every week from someone who connects and adds 100+ more to his file. Please give me some first names to the Stewarts, Deans, should that have been Phelps? Then give me Phelps too. Those surnames are all in his data base. Folks, if you are just starting out doing your genealogy, I want to encourage you to keep at it. Bob Crawford showed up at the office at Greenridge Cemetery here in Saratoga Springs, NY in October 7 years ago. I was sitting there in the books. He had driven from MI with his wife Betty Ann and two dogs hoping to find just one tid-bit that would say his ancestor Robert Crawford really had lived in Saratoga County before moving to MI. WELL, by the end of that week, he was so overwhelmed by the load of things we found that he actually had to leave the NYS Library at 3pm because he couldn't take anymore. We had run around to cemeteries, libraries, historians and anything else we could think of sun to dark, Mon-Thur and then to NYS Library on Friday. One archival box with a bunch of Crawford papers absolutely blew his mind. When I came back to his table with a load of DAR books for him to look at next, he had packed up his brief case and said we were leaving. I thought he was joking until I looked at his face and as he handed me the papers I could see he was shook up. He said "I had only hoped to find that the Crawfords were in Saratoga, look at this." The papers took them back from Saratoga to Westchester County, NY to Stamford, Ct to Tyrone, Ireland and were filled with stories about them and their allied families. Oh yeah, earlier in the day we made a huge discovery of 6 big boxes in the Archives of one of the allied families of Saratoga Springs which had Bible records, their diaries, all their legal papers (wills, deeds and other) as well as newspaper clippings, photos of many different people and the genealogy of all of the local people. We had been to almost all of their graves and photographed them that week. So keep on plugging. Bob bought the two microfilms of Durkee's Epitaghs of Saratoga County and placed them at the Saratoga Springs Public Library so anyone coming here could have ready access to them. They have seen a lot of use in the past 7 years. God Bless Ruth Ann [email protected] ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Stillwater April 27 1880 "A burgler gained and entrance into Uncle Jimmie Fitzgeralds residence Friday night, Upon the cry reaching Jimmies ear he called to his sister to bring his shilleheh, then like a gallant knight he rushed toward to confront whtever might oppose him. At this juncture his sister cried out that she ahd captured the intruder and pointed to the cradle. 'Sold' cried the old man, ' but faix it is better so for I am now a grandfather and my Tommy is daddy, The newcomer weighted 11 3/4 pounds. We did not learn whether he gained an entrance to the house by the front or rear door"

Hi Saratoga County, CORRECTION: I get excited about genealogy, and especially when I have just found a cousin. That was the case when I posted the below. I'm sorry if I steered anyone wrong when I misnamed my own ancestor in this post. It was supposed to read : Alfred and Rachel AVERY Edwards. Rachel's mother was a Stevens. DANIEL did the same in 1855. WILLIAM comes in through Boston, 1856, then to Elkhorn in 1857. Then back to Waterford in 1863 to be married to ANNE BURNEY at St Marys RC. Then back to Elkhorn. What is up with this??? Slainte, Tim
Hi, I know of some people from Saratoga that went west. My ancestor, Henry Edwards, his wife, Sarah "Sally" Baker Edwards, and at least one son, Lewis B. Edwards, and one daughter, Anna Edwards, went to Bloomfield, Green County, Indiana around 1820. Another family from Saratoga also went, the Van Vorst family. Also, my 2nd great grandfather, Byron Edwards, and his wife, Helen Rickerson, went first to Delavan, Walworth County, Wisconsin around 1856. Rumor has it that they went then to Indiana, but I have not yet found them there. After that, they went to El Dorado, Butler County, Kansas around 1881-2. And then Byron homesteaded in Lincoln County, Oklahoma in 1892-96. I hope this will help someone. Kim Nichols
I have a copy of a rather jumbled and as yet unproven partial genealogy that talks about Avery and Edwards families and Eli Closson from Saratoga County going to Kansas in 1874. In fact, it appears that Rueben and Jane Electa ROGERS Edwards were a part of the group that went and returned. Maria STEVENS Avery is supposed to have died there in 1874 and some of the group returned to Saratoga County after having been there for only six months. I have not tried to find the part of Kansas as yet other than on the Kansas Genweb. I've been extracting the early NJ marriage bonds and posting them to the NJ GenWeb Archives. When I saw your note about an Arie BANTA that came from New Jersey, I ran a search for the BANTA surname in the records that I've already completed. Here is what I found thru Vol. G. - and there is an Arie BANTA in the bunch. They all seem to be from Bergen County, NJ. Pat B > Dottie said that the your Arie Banta b 1797 is the brother of her Peter > that I sent in an earlier message. She said the earlier Arie came from > NJ and I told her about all of the NJ records that we have at NYS Library > and she is going to try and get down there so I can help her locate them. from microfilm copies of original marriage bonds in possession of NJ Dept. of Education, Division of State Library Archives & History, filmed in 1966. "Marriages are from various counties, and are arranged in groups by surname, but not alphabetical within groups." (Family History Library Catalog; 0888701-0888710) I have capitalized all surnames for ease in identification. When there was a discrepancy with a name in the body of the bond and the signature, the difference of the signature is in parentheses. NOTE: these are only "alphabetized" by the first letter of the GROOM's surname, you have to go thru all of them when searching for info on women, which is why I started this in the first place. Ruth Ann: My NICHOLS ancestors moved from Saratoga Co., to Madison Co., and then to Michigan . They lived in St. Johns (Clinton Co.) and then some of them moved to Detroit (Wayne Co.) I was wondering where the people living in Saratoga Co.migrated from? My Isaac NICHOLS was born in 1762 and I have been searching for a long time to find where he came from. His wife Elizabeth BRADSHAW was born in Stillwater about 1774 . I would like to find out where her father James BRADSHAW came from Any suggestions on migration into Saratoga Co.? Thanks Barbara
I'm seeking information on Chester Jackson b. 15 Feb 1790 Resided at Milton, Saratoga, NY d. 11 Feb 1867 Peoria, Peoria, Ill. m.(1)Phebe SMITH b. 29 Sep 1795 Saratoga?,NY d. 21 Dec 1834 Saratoga, NY Their dau. Martha Jane JACKSON b. 20 May 1827 Saratoga Spring, Saratoga, NY d. 16 Aug 1908 Peoria, Peoria, Ill. married (1) John McINTOSH who may have died supervising work on the Erie Canal(unverified).I find Martha on the 1850 census living in Milton alone with her two girls, Phebe and Mary. She then married John's brother James McINTOSH and by 1860 they have moved to Peoria, Peoria, Ill. I find Chester Jackson's son Hiram JACKSON (b. 1824)on the 1850 census living in Peoria, Ill. but Chester JACKSON (60 yr.)wife(2) Jerusha 53 yr, Speir 8 yr, are still living in Milton, Saratoga NY in 1860. but Chester d. 1867 Peoria, Ill and wife Jerusha d. 1862 buried Peoria, Peoria, Ill. Any information on these families would be greatly appreciated. Dorothy
I have found that when I cannot find anything on people in Saratoga or any place in the Northeast, I automatically start giving thought to looking somewhere West. Many of the people who left here and went to Michigan, for instance, seem to have started with one or a couple of families (brothers, brothers-in-law, cousins, neighbors) and went first. After getting a house up, land cleared, settled and knowing what was what, encouraged the others back East to come out too. The mass of families who dwindled here and end up there were basically between 1827 to 1842. When one of the older generation who remained here died, you will often find the remaining person went to live with one of their families out west and when they died, they were buried out there. This was true of the single ladies, disabled and those listed in census as idots, etc. These may be the other unknown adults in the household in the census of 1840 and earlier. They did not have nursing homes as we do now. By the way, if you have early Michigan people, there is a wonderful set of books on the Michigan Pioneers. I cannot find the exact title but there is a set at the Onondaga County Library in Syracuse, NY and a set at the Burton Collection at the Detroit Public Library. I have the email address and website for a gal in Detroit area who will look things up for a fee. I have email for people in Syracuse area who do research also. These Pioneer books are just unbelieveable. The pioneers wrote them, not a historian who came along years later. The pioneers wanted to be sure that everyone knew their stories and lineage. They had annual meetings until they died out and each annual meeting had a report of who died, married and was born to them in the past year. They each wrote their lineage, family stories, affiliations, cousins, neighbors, and who of their family (in-laws, cousins, etc.) were still back East, where their ancestors came from, etc. Love those books!! So when you lose track of your people, check to see the dates the states out West started seeing pioneers and check their early histories to see if your surnames appear there. Takes a little time but many of the books like History of Saratoga County have an awful lot to offer. That is the beauty of the GenWebPages and being able to check each county in each state. Most have reference to local libraries, historical and genealogy societies. The GenWebPages are almost all volunteer efforts and anything you know about your ancestors should be placed in their "surname" and "queries" so others may find you but also your ancestors name is going to be placed where it should be and become a part of their history. This may be the only record anyone has there. Are your Saratoga ancestors all on the Saratoga GenWebPage? If anyone finds any mention of Saratoga families moving to an area, please let me know. There are some historical or genealogical societies in other states that have quite a bit of information about Saratoga people who were their pioneers and I have not been able to find them. There are a couple in Wisconsin but the information I had was not correct. We need those connections.
