    1. [NYSARATO] Thorn CONNELL family goes to MI in 1837
    2. The Thorn Connell (b. 1805) family left New York and went to Union City Branch Co, MI in 1837. (This is per his obit.) On the 1840 Census I find him residing in Sherwood Twp, Branch Co, MI with his brother-in-law Jonathan Mosher as the next entry. Jonathan Mosher only stayed there a short time and went on to settle down in IL. Thorn spent his whole life "Going West." In 1850 he was in Calhoun Co, MI. In 1854 he moved to Floyd Co, IA. In 1865 he went to Kossuth Co, IA. He was in Neb for a time and then in 1873 he went to the Willamette Valley, OR turned around and settled down in Eastern Oregon where he died in 1884. 1. [NYSARATO] Where are Saratoga Descendants Today?
    2. Saratoga List Have been communicating with some of the list members off the list. Thought everyone would enjoy seeing where everyone is. Do not give your full name (nickname okay) and do not give your complete address, but lets see where descendants of Saratoga descendants are on this Earth. I know we have some Heritage Members in many places including Australia. Sample Ruth Ann Saratoga Springs, NY (actually I don't have any ancestors here but do have descendants here which is why I moved here) ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 1. [NYSARATO] Census 2000 and your relatives
    2. Got another idea Since EVERYONE is suppose to get a Census 2000 form and required to fill it in and mail it back, why not send all of the heads of your your families a SASE with a form with everything you know about their family printed in pencil. Ask them to check the information on your form and to add/correct information. NOTE - If you include a little note with that form that reads "I am not sure the information I have on this form is correct for your family. Please check, correct and add what is missing. As it stands, this is the information I have for your family in my database and would like it correct." Then put something in there that is an OBVIOUS error so they start really checking this paper and making sure it is correct and updated. It has worked for me!! This goes to the ones who never have answered and it really bugs them if something isn't correct. Then they pick up a pencil and correct and add. This reminds me of a woman that my cousin contacted to get her family and some of her aunts and uncles all correct in his genealogy. She was rather nasty and said she would not and no one would get that info. I have to tell you I almost laid on the floor of the NEHGS in Boston dying from laughter when I found a wonderful big book on the BIDWELLS which included all of her family including her and her children and was as current as 3 years before when it was published. No, I did not make a copy and mail it to her but at least we had the info and so much more we had not found on the Bidwell lines. With the Internet White Pages, SSDI and other resources, we can do these things much easier than before. 3. Better yet - We're planning a family reunion this summer. I think I'll ask all my family members to make 2 copies - one to keep for themselves and the second one to send to me or bring it to me at the reunion. Then I'll have an up-to-date record of all the living generations (or at least some) : - ) . We collected all current family members for our first reunion in 1994. I'm sure it could use updating. kc. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, January 31, 2000 1:20 PM Subject: [NYSARATO] Census 2000 > > This idea came in on another list, but I think it's a great one to keep in > mind > The year 2000 is a Census Year. > Most of the census will be taken by mail. > After you have filled out your census form why not make a > copy of it and file with your important (genealogy) papers. > Then your family will not have to wait 70 years to learn about you. > > > ============================== > Free Web space. 1. [NYSARATO] Banta
    2. I have copied several pages from the Banta Genealogy: "A Frisian Family - The Banta Genealogy" Descendants of Epke Jacobse, who came from Friesland, Netherlands to New Amsterdam, Feb 1659 by Theodore M. Banta, published 1893. Time does not allow me to put all of this on computer as I have a lot of other work to get out. There are 16 pages and I believe I have captured all of the lines who were Saratoga County taking them back to the immigrant, and includes the front page, the first few pages "The origin of the name", and Contents page. If anyone would like a copy of these, send your address and $2.00 to me and that will cover copies and postage. Be sure to include your name and address for me to send them. I will type up, from these sheets just the direct lineal ancestors with dates and information but cannot do it all. This is coming in a separate message. 1. [NYSARATO] Census 2000
    2. This idea came in on another list, but I think it's a great one to keep in mind The year 2000 is a Census Year. Most of the census will be taken by mail. After you have filled out your census form why not make a copy of it and file with your important (genealogy) papers. Then your family will not have to wait 70 years to learn about you.

    1. [NYSARATO] Re: NY Books
    2. Hi All, Thanks to Dick for the most useful information on the Saratoga books (History of Saratoga County - 1609-1878, by Sylvester). I believe I will buy it from bn.com where it's $50. I also have a $10 e-coupon I can use. Thanks to others who suggested I use inter-library loan or rent films from the LDS Family History centers. I have done those things in the past and am aware of them, but my schedule is just not conducive to much time in the library due to their limited hours. My experience with both of these options is that the books/films must be used at the library. So, yes, I really do want to buy a book. :-) Thanks, Kristi

    1. [NYSARATO] Books-Records/Saratoga or Albany County?
    2. Kristi The books you seek that would include the Revolutionary War time period and before and after that would include Saratoga County are not really that plentiful (so to speak). At NYS Library and Archives are assorted records, reports, etc. but to say that it is all laid in nice organized and chronological order with names dates and places for just Saratoga County has not happened. AGAIN, everyone should always keep in mind that this was not Saratoga County until 1791. We were Albany County and that is where you need to be checking the earlier records of all kinds. We have the 1790 census on the Saratoga GenWebPage and that is what was extracted from the Albany County 1790 census which was the areas now known as Saratoga County. Go to the NYS Library website: <www.nysl.nysed.gov> Scroll down a little and you will see Excelsior Catalog - Webcat search engine. Click on that. Then Webcat, then Logon. Sometimes it is difficult to find things and you will not find some things as you think you will, so play with this in different combinations of words and phrases. Do phrases at all times - this is important unless you have a specific title or author and can be exact on those. The word "AND" in between words gives you a lot more options. Try things like Saratoga and Revolutionary War Saratoga and Albany Albany church records. and just keep doing these things and see what your "prizes are". For instance, I looked for Hessians alone. Came up with 8 books. When I searched Revolutionary War it came up with 237 books and included in their discriptions it listed some references to Hessians. But those books that included Hessians did not show up in the 8 books I found searching Hessian alone. Tricky but loaded with surprises and gooooood stufffffff. Remember the City of Albany is located in Albany County. It is the NYS Capital and that is where the NYS Library and Archives is also and they are zealous about collecting anything to do with NYS History and Albany history. It is also a federal repository so they do have RECORDS of all kinds. Unfortunately, they had a bad fire and a lot of the records on the Rev. War were lost. On microfilm are the Loyalist records - their reimbusement by the Crown for their service and losses. If your ancestor leaves, they may have been Loyalists (NYS had the largest quantity of any state of Loyalists) Within families, there were many splits and became instant enemies so your families may not be together. Archibald Crawford's house was burned down by his Loyalist brother in Poundridge, Westchester, NY. John and Jame Crawford were Loyalists and went to Canada. One place to start around here (Saratoga and Albany Co.) is to check out the church and cemetery records. If you can establish about where they were residing from those two sources, then you have more direction on which (of all the townships) areas you should be spending more time in to begin with. Remember that LOVE knows no bounds - which means: The young man married the girl nearby but she actually lives in the next township or county whose lines run between their houses. Most marriages took place in the girl's town and they went off to live where his home is. She dies young - usually buried back home with her family. He continues life where he is residing. These people really got around without super highways and up and moved great distances with wagons. You can do interlibrary loan from NYS Library and other libraries. View what you can and then consider obtaining a microfilm or microfiche copy of the books you want. I purchased a copy of the Southworth Genealogy for about $20. To have ordered a hard copy of that book would have cost me $119. years ago. That is a 500 page book. When you are serious about obtaining these microfilm, call Photo Duplicaton at NYS Library 518-474-5145 and discuss what books you have found in the collection and see what the price would be and how long. Many older, fragile books are already microfilmed and it just needs to be copied. Sure is worth invesitgating. I have only read small amounts in Turning Point by Richard Ketcham but several Heritage Hunter (HH) members were in the audience at Saratoga Springs Library when he spoke and had a book signing. One HH member (retired military) wondered what anyone could possibly write about the Battle of Saratoga that has not already been written. WELL, he rushed up to get a copy when Mr. Ketcham was done. Ketchum had found many diaries and papers of those who walked from NJ, PA, CT and everywhere to show the British they were dead serious about their independence declared the 4th of July the year before. He told of their personal accounts and stories of it all. So here are a couple of ways to shop, review and maybe save before buying. 3. Hi Kristi and others interested in Saratoga Co. books - Maybe this will reduce your list a bit. The SaratogaNYGenWeb page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nysarato/ which is managed by Heritage Hunters, has much of the material from Durkee's "Reminiscences", covering the period 1819-1911. Look under the 'Databases' sectionl. Although this does not include the Rev. War era, it does present an interesting view of the community. Sylvester's "History of Saratoga County, New York" has been prepared for the Web and has been offered to Heritage Hunters for publication on the SaratogaNYGenWeb page so check later for progress on this project. There are other books on Saratoga County with moderate price tags and I expect some of the other members of this list will report them. If not, contact me personally. [email protected] Fletcher

    1. Banta and Van Vranken
    2. Justin, Bruce and others, I am headed to the NYS Library. Taking the later bus as I had computer problems and could not shut my computer off until I did a lot of copying. This was suppose to make things easier but my life is on a leash to this thing. Dottie told me about the Banta book and I know that there is a Van Vranken book. Anything that had to do with early families of Albany County area are there. Remember that before we were Saratoga County, we were Albany Co. so we fall into their early records. This is why it is important to do a couple of things on any list you are on. Put your surname(s) in the Subject. Many people delete a lot because they assume or do not have the time to look thru the pile of messages they receive. Help them find you and make connections. If you are sending a message to a list of a particular area, a simple thing like putting the basic info in will help others to look right down the information and most can "spot" the surnames they have and get involved. At least they will check against their info. Recalling what I put in the original Roll Call message will give enough information to get the ball rolling. Allied families are very important, search and save all of them for one-to-two generations out for sure. Remember, their ancestors are your ancestors too. If you cannot find any information about your direct lineal ancestor to get you back further generations, it may be in the baptism, birth, death or marriage records of another family member, just not yours. Knowing what they are up to and where they were doing it may just be where yours disappeared to. We are seeing a lot of that to be true with the Go West answers. Your Saratoga (and earlier) information may not be anywhere in a repository or records in Saratoga County or even in NYS but everything might be in a library or museum in another state. Old diaries, family letters, Bibles, county histories, newspaper articles which mention these other people could hold one tid-bit of information about our family. I do a lot of estate searches searching for the heirs to unclaimed estates. In doing so, I have to put as much information together from vital records; obits, marriages and births found in the newspapers; old telephone books, city directories, business directories, census and any other source I can think of to find anyone related. Any lead gives us another path to go down and that is how you will find your families. Make it simple with enough info for anyone to pick up on and the details can be supplied later. Example Robert Crawford b 1770 Poundridge, Westchester, NY d 1839 Milford, Oakland, MI m 1798 Saratoga Springs, Saratoga, NY to Hannah Albright Their children: Levi Crawford b 1800 Saratoga Springs, NY Jacob Albright Crawford b 1801 Saratoga Springs, NY Elethear Crawford b 1803 Saratoga Springs, NY Asahel Crawford b 1805 Sararoga Springs, NY Ezra Crawford b 1808 Saratoga Springs, NY Robert Smith Crawford b 1809 Oppenheim, NY Alanson Crawford b 1812 Oppenheim, NY William Dunning Crawfordb 1814 Oppenheim, NY Rhoda Crawford b 1816 Oppenheim, NY More available on their ancestors, siblings, decendents Allied families - Waring, Waterbury, Armstrong, Dunning, Ashton, Wood, Van Dorn, and further Saratoga, Westchester, MI and Canadian (Loyalist) Connections. I just signed on to the FREE Juno Web. This allows attachments and I haven't the foggiest of how that works. With my history of computer problems with email and any other part of computers, I will wait on trying that selection.
