    1. [NYSARATO] Schuylerville cemetery index?
    2. Elliott W. Hoffman
    3. Is there an index to deaths/burials for Schuylerville. I am looking for Nicholas Power who might have died in Schuylerville after 1799. He was born in Germantown, NY c. 1735 and served as a lieutenant in the 10th Regiment of Albany County Militia during the Revolution. His daughter Eva Powers married John Bratt in Schuylerville on 2 Jan 1791 and their daughter Margaret was born there on 15 Sep 1791. Any ideas? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 09, 2000 11:37 AM Subject: NYSARATO-D Digest V00 #48

After the first series aired in 1997, viewers asked for a second series with more specific instruction about researching their roots. The new Ancestors series rises to the challenge with an exciting new emphasisCthe world of records. The series highlights records that family historians use¯such as newspapers, immigration records, military records, and the census. Each episode weaves dramatic personal stories of family history discovery with expert instruction from the nation's top genealogists and librarians. Seasoned genealogists will gain as much from these tips as those who have an interest in family history research but don't yet know where to begin. FGS and GenTech members who have seen sneak previews have received the new series with enthusiasm. For more information, visit us at www.kbyu.org/ancestors. 1. [NYSARATO] NYS Archives War Service Records & Searches
    2. Military Service Record Searches at NYS Archives MILITARY SERVICE RECORDS in NYS ARCHIVES document the service of individuals who served in the State's armed forces during conflicts prior to WW II. The records contain summary data, usually taking the form of financial claims, cards, registers, or one-page abstracts. The Archives holds no military case files (service, pension or bounty land warrant) like those created by the Federal government. ACCESS TO MILITARY RECORDS Military records in the State Archives are available to the public in the Archives' research room on the 11th floor of the Cultural Education Center in downtown Albany. If records are available on microfilm, use of the original records is restricted. INFORMATION ABOUT MILITARY RECORDS. Record series in the State Archives are listed in "Guide to Records in the NYS Archives" (1993). Detailed published guides describe records of New York's participation in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and World War 1, and records of the State War Council during World War II. The "Guide" and other publications as well as the Archives' on-line catalog can be accessed on the Internet through SARA's World-Wide Web Server http://www.sara.nysed.gov The catalog only is also accessible via Telnet unix11.nysed.gov or by telephone dial-in 518-474-8077 or 518-474-9851; login as apublic and chose the terminal type that matches the abilities of your telnet program, usually VT220 or VT100. CHARGES FOR COPIES OF WAR SERVICE RECORDS. There is no charge for the service itself. If documents are found for a named individual, the charge for handling, mailing, and photocopies or abstracts of documents is either $ 3.00 (Rev. War, War of 1812 or Civil War) or $2.00 (Spanish-American War, World War 1). A SEPARATE check or money order MUST ACCOMPANY EACH filled-out search request form. If a record of service is found for a named individual, a photocopy will be sent by U. S. Mail. If no record is found for a named individual, the check or money order will be returned to the sender. SPECIAL NOTES. 1) Because some documents are either too fragile or too faintly written to be photocopied, the NYS Archives may furnish a complete abstract, rather than a photocopy, of a record of war service. 2) Using available indexes and data provided by the requester, Archives staff will search for the documents relating to war service of a named individual. However, the Archives is not responsible for identifying documents relating to a particular person, especially if a common name is searched. 3) Search requests containing incomplete information will be returned to sender. 1. [NYSARATO] Friends to Preserve Historic Saratoga Racecourse
    2. Forwarding this to people who might be interested - Ruth Ann ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------- From: Josh Kuperman <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2000 14:55:28 -0500 We have two main immediate concerns. Ultimately, we need the laws governing the racetrack to be strong enough so that the most important historical landmark in Saratoga Springs is preserved. Currently, the only laws (that we've found so far) protecting the racecourse are the very minimal requirements for Historic Review under the State Environmental Quality Review Act. We are doing whatever we can to insure that the NYRA complies with those existing laws on construction. This is why I'm getting copies of documents relating to construction at the Racecourse. Sadly, I don't know of any requirement for even minimal documentation of what changes they're making. I would think that anyone other than the NYRA would realize the need to photograph and otherwise document the ongoing construction and the value of recording what was there before. We are documenting what the NYRA has actually done, what they were legally required to do and what they should have done. Since the last time we sent out any e-mail we attended the meeting of the NYS Racing & Wagering Board and a Saratoga City Council Meeting. The NYSR&WB meeting was encouraging in many ways. The Board is pretty much limited to insisting that the NYRA obey the legal requirements and the NYRA asserted that they had. I will get copies of the documentation that the NYRA presented, so it will become apparent what they did, when they did, and how they did it, eventually. I received responses to two foil requests: I asked the city for copies of building permit applications made by the NYRA for construction at the racecourse. They xeroxed the documents in file 8094 and gave them to me for $9.50. (I'm actually quite impressed with the city. They provided the requested documents within 5 days from when I asked for them.) I made a much broader request for documents related to historical review of documents related to construction at the Racecourse from the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. They acknowledged receipt and promised to get back to me by April 11, 2000. I will try to go through and get some more stuff up on the web site over the weekend. -- Josh Kuperman [email protected] http://www.racing.saratoga.ny.us -- This e-mail was sent to the Friends to Preserver Historic Saratoga Racecourse It is sent because your address was added to the list because either 1. 1. [NYSARATO] Benedict Arnold's Cannon Found on eBay
    2. >From Dick Eastman's newletter 25 Mar 2000 Benedict Arnold Cannon Found on eBay A cannon believed to be from a Revolutionary War boat commanded by American traitor Benedict Arnold and plucked 70 years ago from the shores of Lake Champlain turned up on the shores of online auctioneer eBay Inc., according to Vermont's U.S. Attorney. The bronze "swivel gun" was fetching bids above $2,000 on eBay a few weeks ago when Vermont historians heard about the auction and contacted Vermont U.S. Attorney Charles Tetzlaff. Law enforcement and eBay officials tracked down the seller -- a retired U.S. Air Force general -- who said he bought the historic hardware for $500 two years ago at a Virginia antique show. The seller had been told that the cannon was removed from the shores of Lake Champlain with a truck and chain in the 1930's when it was in the way of a planned boat pier. Based on that information and a preliminary examination, experts believe the cannon might have come from an area of the lake known as Arnold's Bay, in Panton, Vermont, where Arnold destroyed four ships on Oct. 13, 1776, after the Battle of Valcour Island. Markings on the cannon indicate the same Philadelphia firm that made the Liberty Bell cast this piece as well. The seller "did the right thing." He closed the auction on eBay and donated the cannon to the U.S Government. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 1. [NYSARATO] Walworths in Saratoga Springs
    2. Tim Don't have much time to get into this as I have a class to attend in an hour but the Harden's were relatives of Abe Lincoln's. Their ancestry all ran back to Harden County, KY(?).<Gone brain dead. They were also related to the Walworth's who had kin out that way too. When Ellen Harden's widowed mother married the widower Reuben Hyde Walworth here in Saratoga, daughter Ellen Harden lived here with mama and step dad Reuben. Reuben had a son Mansfield. Stepdaughter Ellen married Mansfield. One of the sensational murders in the newspapers here was Ellen's son killed his father because he so abused Ellen. Wife abuse is not a new thing. This was a very prominent family here. When Reuben Hyde Walworth held court, he would listen to both sides and make a quick decision. Some of Napoleon's men were here at his court. The best part of going to the court at Reuben's? He dispensed with everything quickly and everyone - winner or loser - were invited to stay for food and spirits and all usually stayed. These were very popular occasions and many a who's who of the world knew Reuben. The interesting thing is that when I read about their place I thought it would be on upper Broadway in the big mansions toward Skidmore College. WELL, it was a one-horse lot compared to the big ones on up the street on upper Broadway. Today it has a gas station sitting on it and is next to the Firehouse Restaurant (currently closed) and across the street from the big Civic Center at the intersection of Rt 50 and Rt. 9P (Van Dam and Broadway). I live just up the street a few blocks and when I go by there, I often think about all of the people who had been on that lot. When the last member of the Walworth family died in the 1950's, it was the instructions of the family that the house be torn down. There are pictures but there is nothing like the houses of the past. If anyone knows Saratoga Springs, there is another move underway by someone who wants to develop the old Rip Van Dam Hotel. His plans keep changing every appearance. First he wanted to rip off the wing in the back. And glass in the beautiful old front porch into a restaurant so you could only sit on the front porch if you were in the restaurant. This is a big thing for tourists to go up on the porch and into the lobby and look around. His latest plan is to glass in the porch on left and right and make it commercial offices for some big company. They would have to hang plants or shutters to be in there when the sun is on it. I would love to see a campaign as this is one of the last of the beauties in downtown Saratoga. He now wants to develop it into office spaces when it was originally suppose to become a hotel for a national chain. All the city fathers see is $$$. They may find they will cut their own throats if they do because that is what brings tourists to that end of town. The other beauty is next door - The Adelphi Hotel which was previously owned by a gangster and the current owners have kept it pretty much the way it was back in the 30s or 40s. Great place to roam through and eat. That is why we don't want to see that huge porch next door at the Rip Van Dam with the high columns all glassed in. If you ever get here, be sure and find the books about Saratoga Springs that show pictures of the buildings that don't exist any longer. This area is so rich in history and they need to wake up to what they have before it is gone. They are all at the Saratoga Springs Library. Got to run. 1. [NYSARATO] Catholic Cemeteries in Saratoga County, NY
    2. Hello Saratoga people, As most of you know, Cornelius Durkee compiled his Epitaghs with the recording of stones found in cemeteries all over Saratoga Co. in 1876-77. Did a wonderful job for the most part EXCEPT he did not care for Catholics so he didn't copy any that were around. As a matter of fact, in copying Greenridge Cemetery in Saratoga Springs, he notes that in the front of the cemetery along Lincoln Ave is what is known as the "Catholic" section which he states he chose not to copy. Well, he also noted that in his opinion the Irish Catholics did little for Saratoga Springs so he chose not to copy it for that reason with the exception of a few "notable" people. Amongst the few notable people was Ellen Harden Walworth, step-daughter of Reuben Hyde Walworth - last Chancelor of NYS. Well, that was not what she was noted for as much as being one of the founders of the DAR. (I cannot tell you who the others were) While discussing all of the cemeteries that are in progress or already copied that we can get up on the Saratoga GenWebPage, I suddenly realized that there did not seem to be a compiled list of the Catholic cemeteries. Hmm, how might we start that list? >>>>ATTENTION<<<<< If your records show your ancestor in any Catholic or ethnic cemetery in Saratoga County, please just send this list the name of the cemetery and the town it is in. 1. [NYSARATO] Summary of Saratogians from VT
    2. Carol asked me to summarize for the group the responses I got, so here goes. 1) Vermont was once a part of New York, but not the other way around. So someone living in the Saratoga area would never have said "I live in Vermont." Though someone living in Bennington, VT might have said "I live in New York." 2) No one had a single reason why people migrated from VT to NY, but apparently they came for better land and opportunities and at lots of different times. What I was looking for was something like, for example, the 1849 Gold Rush to California, or the 1620s Puritan migration to Plymouth Colony, but apparently no one knows of a single such motivating factor for the Saratoga area. 3) I got a couple of responses about Weeks/Wicks/Wix possibly being from NH rather than VT. Unfortunately I have no links to any in NH, but I'll keep looking! Meanwhile if any of you come across any Weeks/Wicks/Wix by the names of Daniel, Gilbert, Stephen, James, Phebe, Mariah, Barak, or John born in the Saratoga area or in Vermont in the 1750-1780 time range, I'd love to compare notes! My direct ancestors moved on to Delaware Co., OH by as early as 1810, but it doesn't mean they didn't leave a few relatives behind. 4) Someone mentioned an animated map of NY counties which is at http://www.academic.marist.edu/ssp97/animated.htm Kristi

    2. The Animated map of New York counties is at <A HREF="http://www.academic.marist.edu/ssp97/animated.htm">http://www.academi c.marist.edu/ssp97/animated.htm</A> Thanks for that hint!! Now, in return here's a tip on how you can print all or some of the frames: 1) As the map is scrolling through mouse click on the "stop" button at the top of your web browser when it gets to the frame you want to print. I use Internet Explorer, but no doubt there is a similar function similar in other browsers. 2) Hit the "Print Scrn" on your keyboard. On my keyboard this is in the same row as the function keys. (This is an actual physical key, not something to mouse click on.) It will appear that nothing happened, but what this does is copy an image of whatever is on your screen to the Windows clipboard. It won't actually print it to the printer. (Used to in bygone days!) 3) In any image editing program use the "paste" command to paste the contents of the clipboard into the program. I used Microsoft Photo Editor that comes with MS Office, but any similar software should work, Photoshop, Picture Publisher, etc.etc. 4) Now you can crop out just the part you want, print it, save it, whatever. 5) If you want to go get another frame, you may have to click on the "refresh" function to get it to start scrolling again. Hope that helps somebody. Kristi

    1. Re: [NYSARATO] Saratogians from Vermont
    2. Thanks Cynthia! I was wondering if that might have been the case. We've found lots of Weeks in VT, but so far can't seem to link up to any specific family. Now here's a related question: Was the area that is now Saratoga County ever part of Vermont? What I mean is if someone lived in the village of Stillwater or Saratoga would there ever have been a time when they would have said "I live in Vermont."? Thanks, Kristi In a message dated 3/22/00 9:46:58 AM Mountain Standard Time, [email protected] writes: >... At one point Albany County included all of the state of > Vermont. 1. [NYSARATO] Saratogians from Vermont
    2. Hi Saratoga Folks, We have some ancestors (Weeks/Wicks/Wix) who were in Saratoga and Stillwater around the time of the Revolutionary War. In later records they state they were born in NY or sometimes they say VT. Vermont didn't become a state until after they were born (1790ish or so), but I suppose that area was still called Vermont. I've noticed others of you searching Saratoga area ancestors who have Vermont roots. Where in Vermont did they come from? I'm wondering if there was a mass migration from somewhere in Vermont to the Saratoga area. Do any of you know why they would make such a trip or when they came? Thanks for any hints, Kristi

    1. [NYSARATO] MOREHOUSE, Gould; 1866 Collamer Ceme
    2. Dianne
    3. A three part question regarding Gould MOREHOUSE who died March 12, 1866, and his daughter. One: where exactly is the Collamer Cemetery? Would there be an obit or a local death certificate for this date (1866)? Does anyone know if the other members of his family are also buried at Collamer? Two: Gould's daughter, Eleanor, married Sept. 16, 1829 to a LAWRENCE in Saratoga. Would it be possible to get a local marriage certificate? Does anyone know what church the MOREHOUSE family of that area attended? Or, possibly the LAWRENCE family? Three: Would anyone have access to the 1830 (or possibly a state census for 1835?) Saratoga Cnty Census to see if a Seaman LAWRENCE is listed as a head of household? I would really like to learn the names of his parents and siblings. Any guidance on finding this information would be appreciated. Thank-you. Dianne
