    1. [NYSARATO] ROLL CALL - LIGHTHART, HOWENSTEIN, WAMPLE
    2. CK C
    3. Would like to know more about the family of CHARLES FRANKLIN 'Frank' LIGHTHART, b. Aug 1847, NY, d. 1910, NY, buried Fishers Cemetery, Rotterdam, NY. The Census stated his farm was mortgaged and that his father, name unknown, was born in NY while his mother, name unknown, was born in CAN. Frank married ELLEN E. HOWENSTEIN, b. abt. Aug 1849, NY, d. 1916, also buried in Fishers Cemetery, Rotterdam, NY. The same Census states her father was born in Switzerland, while her mother was born in NY. Neither name is known. Of note: The writing on the Census shows Ellen's name as 'ELLISE,' however, her grave stone says 'Ellen E.' This couple had two daughters, LILLIAN LIGHTHART, b. abt. Oct 1871, NY. She married, when is unknown, a man named WAMPLE, no first name known. The Census shows this information and states Lillian is a widow as of 1900, age 28, and a house maid. Their second daughter, SARAH LIGHTHART, b. Jul 1874, NY, d. 1941/42, Schenectady, NY, buried in Fishers Cemetery, Rotterdam, NY but not in the family plot. In 1900 she was single, at home, and a dressmaker. She was my grandmother. She married sometime before 1913, probably in Schenectady, NY, to WILLIAM BENJAMIN ARMSTRONG, b. 27 Nov 1867, d. 8 Jul 1947. They had one child, LEWIS LIGHTHART ARMSTRONG, b. 11 Aug 1913. A later census shows this couple have parted company and are living in separate residences with their son aged 6, living alone with his mother in Rotterdam, NY. It is not known if this couple ever divorced, but neither remarried. William Armstrong was, however, married and widowed prior to this second marriage. There were children born of this marriage. In fact, interestingly, his daughter, ELSIE ARMSTRONG, also married a HOWENSTEIN. I find this more than coincidental. Mr. Armstrong was living in that household on the later census. Would appreciate any information on WAMPLE that anyone can provide. I'm assuming Lillian's husband was roughly her age, plus a few years so would have been b. abt. 1858. Thank you. 1. [NYSARATO] Surname Exchange Index deadline 30 Apr

    2. Forgotten in life, interrupted in death Albany -- University Heights project rising atop almshouse's burial field may force relocation of remains by: ELIZABETH BENJAMIN Staff writer Such is the lot of the poor, the unwanted, the unidentified and the forgotten of 19th-century Albany -- laid to rest in more than a thousand unmarked graves now paved over by a parking lot. They were the city's most marginal inhabitants, whose deaths were allotted one line apiece in a ledger kept at the Albany County Hall of Records. ' Unknown man, found drowned in the river,'' one entry reads. 'Died suddenly in jail,'' says another. Many state simply, 'Stillborn.'' Since early March, archaeologists have uncovered the remains of four people behind the New Scotland Avenue Armory while doing site work for the University Heights project -- a campus for a consortium of local colleges that could eventually include a megabookstore and food court in the old armory as well as a hotel and conference center. 3. Hi Anna - As the preparer/publisher of the Muster Rolls Database, I can answer part of your question. You will notice that several enlistees were recorded as being born "Mohawk River". I am not sure how many settlements there were along the Mohawk River, in those days but much of the area was still wilderness so it is likely that someone could have been born at a 'camp site' or primitive community that had no established name. Of course, they could have been born on a boat; the counterpart of being born in a "taxi", today <G>. As for geography, the Mohawk River extends roughly from the southern border of Saratoga County (Waterford) where it joins the Hudson River, westward to Oneida Lake, beyond Rome, NY. This was part of the old Erie Canal which continued westward to Buffalo and Lake Erie. I'll let the geographers and historians fill you in here. I do not find a Cartwright on my NY State maps and a search of the GNIS (Geographic Names Information System) , at http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/ for Locale or Populated Place, does not return a matching feature. 3. Could someone on the list help me with finding these locations. On the Saratoga NYGenWeb, Listed under New York Colonial Muster Rolls, are the Troops enlisted in the parent Albany Co., NY., some of whom may have settled in Saratoga County which was formed in 1791. One person, enlisted in 1760 at age 18, which would make him born 1742 Then it states he was born.........Mohawk River. My question is this, where was that? Was it a town, or do you imagine he was actually born on the river? Second, was there a Cartright in the Mohawk Valley? I do know there was a Kortright in Delaware Co. Thanks, Anna [email protected]

    1. [NYSARATO] A success story to share
    2. This story is not a Saratoga story (it would be nice if one of you have a connection though) but I wanted to share it with you so that you will see what can happen when you search the Rootsweb Archives lists and other sources and communicate with people. This lady is a grandmother whose parents and their siblings never knew the history and they all died young. Read on and see what she has discovered........... >From Ruth Ann - --------------------------------------------------------------- This message is from the AmRev-Hessian list: ----- Original Message ----- From: Beverly Schmitz <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, April 15, 2000 1:51 PM Dear John Received your Hessian Guide today along with your notations on Karl Aulich (Charles Carl Aulick). This guide will be put to good use. I had been in contact a few times per email with Carol Aulick in the past few weeks. She was "found" by searching in the Rootsweb Archives. She recommended the AMREV-HESSIAN mailing list to me. She and I are descended from Charles Aulick's son Charles Andrew. Carol is descended from Charles Andrew's son Frederick Ferdinand Aulick and I am descended from Charles Andrew's son Charles Ertmann Aulick. I live about 40 minutes from Henry Aulick (in Kentucky) and my sister has lived in the Falmouth area for over 40 yrs. Our grandparents were from the Pendelton County area and moved to the northern Kentucky area where my middle sister and I still reside. I have been a few times to the Aulick cemetery (my great great grandfather is buried there) and have met with Henry. Henry is descended from Charles Andrew's son Napoleon Bonaparte Aulick . Henry, Carol, and I are each descended from a son of Charles Andrew. Henry gave me a copy of the typewritten transcript of the "Aulick History", "Aulick Genealogy", and Charles' will. I gave him an "album" of scanned pictures from my father's family along with printed information from the Hessian webpages , Selesia, Dolnoslanski, and Eastern Prussia. Below is an excerpt of some family information from another Aulick: "Family legend says that the first Aulick in America was a Hessian soldier from Bavaria who fought in the Revolutionary War. He remained here after the war was over. (Two) sons were Charles Andrew Aulick and John Henry Aulick. Charles Andrew Aulick brought his wife and family by wagon to Pendelton County (Kentucky) between 1809 and 1810. They were the first Aulick settlers in Pendelton County. They were large land owners in the Four Oaks area. They had 9 slaves and possibly farmed 320 acres. John Henry Aulick was also born in Winchester, Va. (1781-1873). He was a commodore in the U.S. Navy and served under Commodore Perry. A ship was named after him "SS Aulick" and the ship name is still in use. He also fought in the war against the Barberry pirates." The only information my sisters and I knew about the Aulick history was our grandmother told us the first Aulick was a Hessian. Our father died at the age of 41 yrs. in 1953. All my father's siblings died young, 39 yrs and 46 yrs. His father died at age 49yrs. There was no one to tell us anymore of our Aulick background. Now we are all grandmothers and are able to actually discover where and how to find such information. I am excited and astounded at the information I am accumulating in the past few months. The AMREV- HESSIAN list is excellant. Members of the list have provided me with starting points and information that I never thought I would know in my lifetime. The search and discovery of "bits and pieces" of knowledge in these men's life is rewarding. However, the more I learn the more I realize how little I know. Along with your guide, I have received information from the Winchester Archives on the Charles Aulick house and have sent for booklets on Winchester and the Revolution etc. and a few other booklets available through the Winchester archives. Now I am off and running. Any information discovered will be given back to the mailing list. Thanks again and "Cheers"! 1. [NYSARATO] Hoax messages
    2. Hello Pat and Saratoga list people There are so many emails that are Hoax messages and you should never send them anywhere. >From any search engine, such as Yahoo, you could put in Hoax or Virus and they will lead you right to the sights that explain all of the messages you ever receive that are hoaxes. Go to McAfee and you will see all of the Virus messages and the legitimate virus that you should know about. Most you can download from the various virus protection sights and cover you from the newest and tell you what to watch for. I often get messages with the email addresses of people I communicate with or from a list like this one but as soon as I see From: "Undisclosed Recipient" I delete it. The email address from one client in Texas showed up and another right after just like it. Then I saw the little .exe in part of the routing and knew that she had been the victim of a virus that was going around at the time. I called her in Texas that morning and her husband was sitting there having breakfast and told her he had virus protection and that I was not correct. Later in the day they left a phone message for me. He checked his computer and thought everything was okay. BUT then his friend in town called him and said he had gotten two messages and then he called another friend and they had gotten the two messages. They had not sent any of these people, including me that message. The virus "which was known as a worm" had picked up several of the email addresses he had sent to in the past and sent these messages out. Anything you suspect might be "different" definitely do not pass it to anyone else and be sure that you have deleted it completely from your trash bin too. All these Bill Gates, Disney, etc. offers are all a hoax. If it is too good to be true, it is probably not true at all. 2. Patricia M. Bergener
    3. I have received from different mailling lists, a request to pass on a chain-letter from a person claiming to be a child who has brain cancer. This is a HOAX and (I believe) was propogated so that the originator could gather e-mail addresses for a less-than-honorable purpose. I checked it out at the "Make-A-Wish Foundation" home page, http://www.wish.org/ To quote them briefly: "Each day, the Make-A-Wish Foundation National Office and chapters receive hundreds of inquiries regarding chain letters claiming to be associated with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. As a matter of policy, the Make-A-Wish Foundation does not conduct these types of wishes-including Internet and e-mail requests. Below are the chain letters currently circulating around the world. . ." Before passing something on, it is a good idea to check it out - Just a thought Pat B

    1. [NYSARATO] Palmer Family History
    2. Judith Hayward
    3. My interest is Thomas and Rosina Palmer and family who arrived in Saratoga Springs in 1907 from Sidney NY, both born Somerset UK. Thomas was a worker for Clarks (gloves). They arrived with sons Sidney, Augustus (Gus) and daughter Linda. Linda married Louis Hodges, a teamster. Gus was already married to Mabel with children Gwendoline and Howard (Glen Howard). Sidney married Bessie in the US. I have found a grave for Sidney and Bessie in the Greenridge Cemetary at Saratogo Springs, and know that until recently there were still members of Gus's family in Saratoga Springs (Howard and Doris his wife,) although Gus had moved to Syracuse in the 1920's. I am trying to trace all members of my Palmer family in NY State, my own grandfather stayed behind in the UK due to ill health when his parents and brothers and sisters emigrated to the US in the period 1896-1901. They were all involved in the gloving industry and there is a great connection between our area of Somerset and NY state, including Gloversville and Sidney, due to the migration of workers in the gloving and leather trades. ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. [NYSARATO] Weather Update - It's Spring again
    2. Talk about weird.............. If you had driven here to see all of the snow (Albany got 13.5" and 30,000 without electric yesterday -according to the headlines in all of the newspapers this morning) you would be disappointed........... It is almost gone!!!! No I have not been drinking. It warmed up today, melted off and there is only snow where it was shoveled to or in the shadow areas of buildings. The sun was very warm and a beautiful day today. NUTS, huh? But there is considerable damage from trees that came down and wires are still down in places. I have been sitting by an open window doing my taxes on the computer and keep hearing bark on trees cracking. Then you hear them fall. The snow is no longer on them but they were bent so far over as they are out of dormancy and the damage is continuing just by their leaning. The power company was just across the street. A tree came down on top of a brand new car. That branch took down another branch which hung pulled the wires out of the side of the house and they are now reattaching them. The power companies will be busy for some time to come as they are taking care of the most important first. Telephone and cable wires are pulled to the side of the road and waiting for that crew. I cannot remember this much damage from the Hurricane that hit last Fall. I learned a GOOD lesson last Fall. Was visiting with friends at the Holiday Inn when the power all over Saratoga went out. He opened the lid of his laptop computer and turned it on. It lit up the room - KEEP your batteries charged. I did the same thing and worked on that computer. What a difference a day makes. 2. 11am Monday 10 Apr 2000 What a difference a day makes.... 24 hours ago a snow storm. Today - BRIGHT sun, snow melting, trees and wires shedding their white covering, buds from trees everywhere on the ground and water starting to run from the melt. Check out the websites for the Albany Times Union and the Schenectady Gazette to read about the storm. Albany had 13.5 inches and 30,000 people in the area without power. 1. [NYSARATO] Spring Sap Snow or Storm in Saratoga?
    2. I use to work with a man in a florist in Binghamton who would always say "Just a little sap snow" when the snow fluries would start in Spring. I thought about that comment when I heard on the radio at 1am today that Michigan received 6" of snow and that the Northeast could expect up to 2" in the Higher Elevations on Sunday (today). It rained last night and into the night it rained quite hard at times. At 4:30am I was back on the computer and about 6 am I glanced out the window to see snow. It was really coming down and there was a good 1-2" already. But wait a minute - the announcer said in the Higher Elevations and Saratoga Springs is not in the Higher Elevations. By 9 am we were looking at 6" plus. I kept hearing trees crack and some branches were falling. Then I heard a big crack and heavy thud. Grabbed my coat and went out only to find my car had 8" of snow and the snow was really coming down. The big thud was a neigbor's tree coming down and landed on her car that she was just getting into. She ran and it landed on the driver's door, right where she was just standing. Another neighbor, two doors away, has a bigger tree sitting on his brand new car. Trees kept dropping limbs and bushes were hanging to the ground everywhere and it just kept coming down. Enroute to church at 10am, streets were blocked because of power wires down and trees across them everywhere. Today was one of the most beautiful winter wonderlands but one of the worst for damage I have ever seen anywhere. When I returned home tonight, my landlord had been without power for three hours and had candles set up. The power was out in quite a large part of the West side of Saratoga Springs and came back on at 10pm and we are amongst the lucky ones in Saratoga County. Others are still out and it will take some time to locate all of the wires that are down because there are so many trees hanging down. Just a little sap snow in Saratoga County, NY.
