I have some information regarding the Cyr-Miquelon surname. Turns out, the Miquelon name was originally a fabricated name given to an orphan way back in the late 1700s. I have a ton of information on the family because my Grandmother made it her life goal to find out how we were related to the orphan. I do not, however, have any information on a Donald Joseph Miquelon. The information I have is as follows: In 1739, Vincent Cyr was born in Beaubassin, Quebec, Canada. He married Angelique Vignalt on January 11, 1774, in the Notre-Dame-des-Arguilliers church on Miquelon Island. They had 10 children, one of who was a boy named Joseph. Joseph was born in La Rochelle, France on October 26, 1782. In the late 1700s, the Cyr family was traveling from Miquelon Island to St. Gregoire, a small settlement on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. En route, most of the passengers died of cholera, including Joseph's parents. A parish priest rescued Joseph, and unbeknownst of the boy's real name, dubbed him Petit Miquelon. When Petit (Joseph) was older, he investigated his origins and found his real name to be Cyr. He proceeded to go by the name Petit Cyr-Miquelon. Petit married Marie Anne Melanson on October 10, 1808 in Yamachiche, Quebec, Canada. They had 12 children, but the only on that I have record of is the child through which my bloodline passes. His name was Pierre Joseph Cyr-Miquelon, and he was born on February 18, 1804 (note that his parents were not married at the time--scandalous) in St Jean, Acadia, Canada. Pierre married Marie Anne Painchaud on February 13, 1832 in Drummondville, Quebec, Canada. Pierre and Marie had at least 3 children, though again, I only know the name and birthday of my ancestor. His name was Joseph Zoel Cyr-Miquelon, and he was born on February 11, 1834 in Quebec. He was the oldest child. Joseph left home at the age of 16 and traveled across Quebec. He married a woman named Nancy Darning on November 17, 1856. It is believed that Nancy's parents were James Darning and Claire LePage. Joseph had many jobs. In 1883 he was an immigration agent for the North West Territories and was located in Regina. He was the postmaster of Wetaskiwin when he lived there later on. And, he worked as a surveyor, and Miquelon Lake near Camrose is named after him because he was the first to survey it. Joseph and Nancy had 10 children. Louis (ii) is my ancestor, but here is where I believe our ancestry splits. Their children were: i. Marie Agnes, b. 11 Nov 1857; m. Joseph Tetu, 12 Jun 1876 St Camille, Quebec, Canada ii. Louis Timoleon, b. 21 Jul 1860; m. Olivine D iii. Arsene, b. 23 Jun 1862, Quebec; m. Marie Eveline Picard, 24 Jul 1893, Wotton, Quebec, Canada iv. Marie Elodia, b. 17 Jun 1864, Quebec; m. Joseph Cote-Crepeau, 5 Nov 1883 (It is denoted that this is Marie's first husband, but does not show a second. Perhaps they were divorced?) v. Marie Cordelie, b. 5 Sep 1866, Quebec; m. Alphonse Thibeault, 8 Jan 1887 vi. Jean Romeo, b. 3 Sep 1868, Quebec; m. (1) Elodie Charbonneau, 18 May 1894; (2) Marie Meranda Therrien, 6 Jul 1910, Manchester, NH, USA. vii. Camille (male) b. 10 Nov 1870, Quebec; m. Adelaide Anasse, 17 May 1894 viii. Joseph Antoine, b. 23 Oct 1872, Quebec; m. Alice Lily Foy, 14 Sep 1897 ix. Zoel Raoul, b. 12 Mar 1875, Quebec x. Phillipe Athanase b. 30 Apr 1878, Quebec; m. Maude Carmel, 25 Nov 1899 I hope this helps considerably in finding more about your ancestry. IF you cannot find a connection among these children, Louis did have 13 children as well. Your ancestor may be lurking there. Don't hesitate to ask questions! Madison.
