The Poor House was mosatl often referred to as the Alms House. It was originally a wooden structure, but was replaced by a brick structure. The brick structure remains and is used as the Administration Building for Rockland Community College. The activities of the Alms House were moved to the Rockland County Health Complex, in Pomona and are under the Department of Social Services. Don't know about Rockland co. but thought you might find this interesting. In 1860 the County Home in Hackensack - {listed as the poor house on one inmates death certificate} had 26 inmates of all ages, both blacks and whites, also in the home, including many children, of whom 19 were paupers, 3 were insane, 2 were idiotic, and 2 were foolish. 1860 U. S. census, Bergen County, New Jersey, population schedule, New Barbadoes Township, Hackensack post office, p. 460 (penned) page no. 72, dwelling 579, family 614, line 15, Stephen Westervelt, County Poor House, (John C. Demarest Warden); digital image by subscription, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com: accessed 21 November 2005); from National Archives microfilm M653, Roll 683.
