    3. The index to Within These Gates does not show any Harings or McCleods, but there are five "Jersey" notations in the index. The first, on page 115, is from the Rockland County Messenger (newspaper) on Feb. 8, 1866, in an exceptionally cold winter. "The travel to New York is by Mr. Jersey's sleigh over the ice to Croton across the frozen Hudson River. This is nearly four miles, which he runs in a half an hour. He makes four trips per day from the American Hotel........." On page 120 and 132, references to Frank E. Jersey, tugboat captain (the tugs towed the barges full of bricks to the city). He was captain of the tug "Mable", and dates of 1908 and 1930 are mentioned. On page 171, a reference to stable boss "Seward 'Sue' Jersey, a man wondrous with the ways of horses" (the original boy named Sue? - sorry, couldn't resist!) Page 185, a picture of the ship the Commodore, 1905 - an Edward Jersey is identified. The picture is too small to recognize a face, but at the Brick Museum they just might have the full sized picture. Many interesting anecdotes in this book - it's available from the Brick Museum in Haverstraw, and I'm pretty sure it's less than $20.
