Jason, I am also sending a copy of this reply to the Dutch-Colonies List as there is general interest in these early New Netherland families. You asked for information on the parents of Cornelis Corneliszen Smith and his wife Sytje Minnelay. The parents of Cornelis Smith were Cornelis Adriaensz. Smith and Anna Frans. Their marriage is recorded in the NYC DRC. The intentions were listed on 1 August 1680: "Cornelis Adriaenszen, young man, from Thuyl in Gelderlant, and Anna Frans, young woman, from New Albany, both living in Stuyvesant's farm." There is further information that the marriage took place at the bridegroom's sickbed on 8 August 1680. Perhaps Cornelis was an invalid. In the October 1997 issue of the NYG&B "Record" I published the results of recent research on the Smith family in Gelderland records. There you will find that Cornelis was baptized on 26 February 1660 in the DRC of the village of Tuil. His parents were Adriaen Lamberts Smith and his second wife, Dirckske Cornelis, "young daughter of Haaften" (a village near Tuil). There is NO indication that Dircksje had the surname of Trommels. There was *another* woman in New Netherland named Dirckje Cornelius Trommels, and the two individuals have been confused by some researchers. The marriage of Adriaen and Dirckje took place in Tuil on 7 September 1656. Sytie Minnelay was the daughter of Albert Minne and his wife "Meinsje" Jans. At least that is one of many forms of her given name and the one used in her wedding record in the Flatbush DRC where this couple was married on 9 November 1684. You can note the arrival of Albert's parents and siblings in Carl Boyer's "Ship Passenger Lists" on page 133. The family was aboard the ship "de Statyn" when it sailed from the Netherlands on 17 September 1663: "Minne Johannes, wife and four children, two 8 years (twins?), one six years and the other one year old; also his wife's sister, and his servant." According to Dorothy Moos in her "Blauvelt Family Genealogy", volume I (page 9), Grietje Minne, who married Abraham Gerritsen Blauvelt on 8 April 1691, was a sister of Albert. Their parents were Minne Johannes and Rensje Feddans, and the family came from the province of Frisia in the Netherlands. I have not been able to find the baptism of Sytje Minne/Minnelay after her parents were married in the Flatbush DRC in November 1684. I did find baptisms for four of their younger children -- Rensje 30 Oct.1692 Brooklyn Grietje 11 Apr.1695 Tappan Aeltje 15 Jul.1697 Tappan Jannetje 13 Apr.1700 Tappan At little Grietje's baptism in the Tappan DRC in 1695, the parents' names are given as Albert Minne and "Meensje Jepes". I suspect that Meensje was also from a Frisian family and that this is probably the most accurate recording of her name. I would hazard a guess that this might be the Frisian equivalent of the Dutch "Wilhelmina Jans". The marriage of Cornelis Smith and Sytje Minnelay took place in the Tappan DRC on 15 October 1707. It is published in the Tappan marriages on page 164 of the July 1953 issue of the NYG&BR. The transcriber mangled the names! "Cornelis Liuids ["obviously" should be "Smids"] born on the farm on Maades [i.e. Manhattan, at Stuyvesant's bowery] and Seytye Moninlay (sic), young woman, born on Long Island in the Bay." I found 10 children baptized as the children of Cornelis Smith and Seytie Minnelay in the Tappan DRC. These (including the names of godparents) can be found in the appendix to David Cole's "History of Rockland County, NY": 1. Mensie 1708 2. Kornelis 1710 (died young) 3. Albert 1713 4. Kornelis 1715 5. Johannes 1717 (died young) 6. Jannetje 1719 (died young) 7. Dirckje 1721 8. Johannes 1723 9. Jannetje 1725 (baptized at Schraalenburgh DRC) 10.Maria 1728 You can now add some more limbs to your family tree! Dorothy On Wed, 17 Jun 1998 JasonA1016@aol.com wrote: > Hello! I am new to the list.
